These comparison reviews are unrealistic. Most people on a budget looking to buy a low-end system wouldn't pair a 1050ti with an 8700k. The closest competitor to the 2400G right now would be a G4560+1030. Even if the 1050ti was magically MSRP again it would still cost about the same price as a 2400G. GT 1030(90$) + G4560(80$) = 160$. 2400G= 170$. 1050ti = 200/250$
@Ravenousjoe7 жыл бұрын
Doothe the 2400g is 4c/8t so it beats the 4560 handily. Best to compare ryzen 1200 + 1030 to the 2200g and the 1400 to the 2400g.
@HarlesBently7 жыл бұрын
Doothe he does a high end cpu to try and eliminate a cpu constraint onto the gpu. To show what does the gpu do compared to other gpu. For an APU though, i wouldnt have minded seeing intels integrated graphics compared as well. Or hell in this case could even use the gpu with the apu and disable the onboard graphics to get a direct comparison and really show if its the graphics or cpu limitin the APU.
@razamatraz17 жыл бұрын
I tend to agree that on a price comparison basis that is a more reasonable comparison. That said, the 1050Ti on an 8700k is really not showing what an 8700k can do it's showing what a 1050Ti can do, which is (debatable) the GPU you might be considering if you had another $200 to spend, and the GPU that is considered minimum for proper 1080p gaming.. It's good to show because I don;t just want to see what price matches but what I might get if I can afford a bit more....how far behind the current "minimum 1080p GPU" will I be? I'd like to see a lot more tests: 1. Compare to way more systems 4560+1030 or RX 550 (I think Gamer's Nexus did this or was working on this), R3 1200 with 1030 or 550, ditto with 1050 (non-Ti) and RX 560. 2. OC tests and force 2GB VRAM (which he should have already done frankly since it's just a BIOS setting) 3. 8GB RAM testing (since this is supposed to be budget) and 8GB in one slot (Single channel) to see how badly it performs, since buying a single 8GB stick and upgrading later might be a budget path if the performance isn't too terrible. 4. More games less productivity.
@146507 жыл бұрын
He was just trying to eliminate CPU bottlenecking to show how good the integrated graphics was compared to a dedicated budget GPU.

It's the fact that Paul & some others used motherboards that default to the 1GB VRAM partition option instead of the max 2GB limit that the boards AMD shipped out to reviewers and others will default too (and AMD has said up to 8GB will be possible with a later BIOS/AGESA update) If he had changed the VRAM setting in the BIOS, they wouldn't be there.
@junkerzn73127 жыл бұрын
@Cooe14 that's what I think too. Either the VRAM setting or temperature throttling... having the 2400G go above 85C is a red flag for turbo'ing. It would be nice if Paul could re-test the stuttering issue with both adjustments. Pump up the VRAM, point a fan at the mobo (no need to replace the cpu-attached cooler) to force the temperature down for testing purposes, both separately and together. But yah... it really does 'feel' like a VRAM sizing issue from his description. -Matt

I completely agree Scott. But from the point of view I was thinking of, I've never owned a amd processer in the last 20 years. I see this a great stepping stone into bigger things for the future. The possibilities that an igpu can quite possibly start getting competitive with dedicated gpus is impressive. As an intel owner and a gamer for 100+fps I still prefer slapping in a gpu in a pci-e slot. But watching amd going for this type of market I'm very impressed and just surprised intel just hasn't tried yet.
@Cooe.7 жыл бұрын
Wesik It's because they can't. Intel could if they would, trust me. Hell, they were so desperate for better GPU tech then their garbage they licensed a semi-custom version of Vega to create Kaby Lake-G, and then hired away the Radeon Technologies Group boss to try & get their GPU efforts up to snuff in an at least somewhat reasonable time frame (they don't wanna have to buy GPU's from AMD any longer than they absolutely need to). GPU tech is absolutely gnarly & largely cumulative. It's a market that will be a nightmare for even cash flush Intel to break into, and it's gonna take them at least a couple years of throwing humongously fat stacks at Raja and his GPU team. That's how bad they want into this market now that AMD's CPU's are as up to snuff as their GPU's always have been.
@Durthquake7 жыл бұрын
not sure if you mentioned it in the video or not, but was the video memory set to the default 1gb or did you up it to the max 2gb? At 12:30 you mentioned "you might want to increase the memory from the default 1gb" which leads me to belive you did the tests at 1gb and not the 2gb?
@Cooe.7 жыл бұрын
Durthquake - He definitely did the tests at 1GB. He was using a different board then the one AMD sent out with their Ryzen-G review kits that defaults to 2GB, and some boards like his default to 1GB instead. I really feel this video needs a disclaimer of sort saying such, because a lot of these results are quite inaccurate because of it.
@Metamorphisis097 жыл бұрын
Check out Hardware Unboxed's video about the vram limit. He did multiple tests ranging from 64mbs to 2gbs of vram and only saw a 1-2 fps increase. So it doesn't really matter in the end in terms of gaming. But he does into go into detail about why you should keep it at maybe 512mb to help the pc overall.
@Cooe.7 жыл бұрын
Seen that test, and then others using different boards where it had MAJOR effects, so I don't think that particular setting's effects are consistent board to board atm (and if the option really did nothing, it would not exist, or at least with the wide and growing range of options).
@DuncDog7 жыл бұрын
Was the APU set to 2GB manually? Jay found that the FPS in most games increased by like 30-50% just by increasing the ram cap, with an average of over 100% faster by that combined with FPS. Your stuttering issue sounds like an allocated GPU memory issue as well.

If you're doing a new system with a low budget, it's a no-brainer, if it's an old system, you'd better be quite careful with what CPU and memory you already have before putting a 950-1050, dirt cheap systems might make these GPU choke and would be a bad investment. +Mayo taizou Way better for gaming, maybe, but it's also more expensive and you have a quite crappy CPU if you intend to do light CPU workloads with it.

So what’s the maximum shared memory that will be available, when drivers are sorted? Seems to me that if 8gb was available it would make a huge difference :/
@bigsportsman7 жыл бұрын
2 gb is the max for the integrated GPU but I expect that will increase as they get further into the year and the APU's get more stable and the kinks get worked out. I would look for the increase to be 4 gb for the integrated GPU.
@PuRe_AdDicT7 жыл бұрын
bigsportsman so what’s the point of putting 16gb in a system then? Surely if the max it can share will be 4gb, 8gb ram is gonna be enough for any machine based on these APU’s
@bigsportsman7 жыл бұрын
Sorry I was not clear. The total max "system memory" (RAM) is the same as all R3, R5 and R7 chips. In APU's there are basically to parts 1. the CPU and 2. the GPU. The difference in APU's is that a set amount of "system RAM" is dedicated to the GPU portion of the APU. This allocation of "system RAM" to the GPU replaces the VRAM (GDDR and/or HBM)usually found on "Discrete Video Cards". This is done to keep costs, package size and power consumption down as these VRAM modules can be expensive comparatively and take up valuable PCB space. The "system RAM" allocated can be changed in the bios settings. This will give the GPU portion of the APU more buffer just like the VRAM would, but is slower than VRAM due to distance and frequency.
@philscomputerlab7 жыл бұрын
Excellent! I'd love to see the same AMD system, but with a 1030 or 550 and how that compares to the APU. And maybe an investigation into different RAM speeds and how it impacts performance as such high end RAM might not be affordable for a budget build.

Read Below you can allocate 64MB! its the same! (Why did you limit yourself to one gigabyte of VRam?????,Its like testing a video card with 4 or 6 gigabytes of RAM,Im disappointed)
@hentosama7 жыл бұрын
OK TURNS OUT VRAM ALLOCATION IS POINTLESS :D Hardware Unbox just explained how the Vram can be set as low as 64MB and games runs the same, Vega dinamically converts ram to Vram when needed, so no need to set up 2GB/4GB vram buffer. However there are some games or programs that do require specific set of vram to start. Why compare it to i7s? What's the logic behind it? Why not i3s? I guess I'll have to wait for someone else's review.

TheDarkToes is i7 8700k a quad core CPU? No. Is i3 8100 a quad core CPU with the same integrated gpu as 8700k? Yes. Comparing 4c/4t or even 4c/8t apu to 6c/12t is idiotic at best.

Adnan Popara nope... you've proved you're the moron. Lol That's why you're utterly clueless on why this video is relevant. If you weren't such a dumbass you'd have a clue, but hey. Continue making yourself look stupider and stupider.... I enjoy shitting on people like yourself. I get enjoyment out of it. Please...

Adnan Popara I mean, I've already got you pegged as someone who can't read, and someone who is unsure on why he's making comparisons between two companies with a similar product. You can't possibly know half of the words he's talking about.... I think you've fallen into the wrong section of youtube. Lol It would be hilarious if you're trying to make a profession out of this... and you don't understand why he's comparing apus with other apus? And comparing it with what a low end pc with a dedicated gpu has to offer? Like wow...

You can't allocate 2 gigs on the "VRAM" APUs??? That would solve a bit the performance problem.
@samatlantaga7 жыл бұрын
You can. I don't think Paul changed it in the bios. I just watched one of Jayz videos and he did testing with it set at 2gb.
@Bourinos027 жыл бұрын
That's what I thought, anyway, it's quite amazing to see APUs you can actually PLAY games with!
@stoneymahoney91067 жыл бұрын
That setting Jay set was NOT VRAM, it was Frame Buffer - that has to be hard allocated at boot, the rest of the VRAM is dynamically allocated as and when the GPU requests it. But Jay's mobo was straight-up screwed, so he's allowed to be confused.
@samatlantaga7 жыл бұрын
Ah true.

+ Stoney Mahoney 2 GB frame buffer? Do you have more information about this?

Awesome video Paul, very complete! Great to see you back in full throttle :) From your own findings I wonder, maybe the stuttering and lower 0.1% from the 2400G are not driver related, but precisely due to hitting those higher temps and therefore throttling
@ugzz7 жыл бұрын
i get you didn't have one, but a 1030 or last gen card makes WAY more sense.. like go buy one at best buy level of sense imo.
@Ravenousjoe7 жыл бұрын
ugzz so buy a 1200 and a 1030 for $190 which comes to $90 more than the 2200g Or buy a 1400 + the 1030 for $235, which is $65 more expensive than this. I see what you are saying, but it just isn't worth it. The 1030 has poor value and if you just need a stop gap before buying a GPU the APUs are the way to go. You are basically getting a GPU for $20.

Why are they putting the better gpu chips in the Intel chips?

AMD has traditionally had better iGPUs than Intel, heck Intel is even integrating Vega onto one of their upcoming chips

Trash video. No reason to include 8700k in your raw CPU benchmarks, and no reason to include 8700k + 1050 TI in your CPU + GPU benchmarks. For CPU you should have only compared between similar price points, and for CPU + GPU you should have only compared between integrated graphics NOT dedicated graphics. Feels like you only include these numbers to dwarf AMD APUs in your scores. Even if you keep reiterating that you include for "numbers only" your agenda is obvious. Dislike.

I'm a bit surprised that no one actually realised that the info of the charts are actually wrong. Because the Orange one is labeled "Ryzen 3 2200G" in the actual chart but in the Infos on the right Orange is labeled as "Ryzen 5 2200G". Similarly the Red one is labeled "Ryzen 5 2400G" in the chart but is labeled "Ryzen 3 2400G" in the Infos.....

I'm glad to see your back to posting more content, i hope you and your wife can find some comfort from all the well wishes we have for you. 13:50 But did you go into the BIOS an set the MHz of the GPU to over 256MHz? For those who do not know. The default MHz on the APU is set to a low number to prevent overheating an damage.Using a 350 to 370 motherboard will allow you to access GPU MHz settings. So it depends on your motherboard.

I can't say thank you enough for showing what you did to get the results you got, makes it a much easier time setting these chips up for my customers :-) It also makes me look like I have a clue doing this in front of said customers XD Great review, these are the cpu's we need right now, and AMD should sell truckloads, and they deserve it. This is the area that Intel just can't compete and that's why I love, love, love AMD right now. Upgrading down the road will also make more sense going this route as it will of course cost you much less as you mentioned. Win Win all around :-) As always, great job Paul, thanks for all the hard work!

Great video. Would love to see how they pair with the 1050 ti too. Kind of give me an idea if getting one now and waiting for gpus to come down in price is a good option or if I should just keep waiting and go with a non-apu Ryzen and a discrete gpu. Benchmarks for pure cpu power vs. the comparable non apu models would be helpful too. Keep up the good work!

It's interesting that your assessment of the 2400G is that it's not as great of a deal as the 2200G. When I saw the initial reviews for these chips, I suddenly had the idea of building a super-portable, desktop-grade, mini computer for my brother who's potentially going away for college next year with a budget-ish laptop and possibly a computer-heavy major (longest sentence I've ever written, my apologies). I expect he would need lots of compute power, decent amount of graphics power (not a huge gamer, but for light rendering perhaps) and supreme portability for airplane reasons. 2400G seemed like a good fit. I wonder how these chips compare to the new NUCs with Vega graphics and Intel CPUs... Rambling aside, good to see you back, Paul.
