Jeff Sharlet has been studying and reporting on far-right movements in the US for decades, but something feels different now. From Waco and Ruby Ridge in the ‘90s to the 2014 Bundy family standoff with the federal government in Nevada, from the rise of Donald Trump to the “martyrdom” of Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed raiding the Capitol on Jan. 6, from the overturning of Roe v. Wade to COVID-19, from the Q-Anon conspiracy to the veneration of vigilantes like Kyle Rittenhouse, new and long-brewing currents of rightwing rage and resentment are converging to change the American political landscape in ways that we will have to contend with for years, if not decades, to come. In the latest installment of our ongoing “Rise of the Right” series on The Marc Steiner Show, Marc speaks with Sharlet about his new book The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War, the volatile moment America is in right now, and what we need to do to confront the far right today.

He was not arresting anyone he did not stop anyone from starting a fire or breaking anything.. He was doing first aid and putting out fires. He carried the rifle for self protection. As for as the religious right issue. Fundamentalism and Prosperity Gospel were invented by the right a century ago, a reactionary movement against the Social Gospel movement. Meanwhile, many on the left can’t even support and are ignorant of left liberal religious people and churches. One of the historical Left theological philosophers was Paul Tillich who was a refugee of Nazi Germany and was both an anti-fascist and a socialist and he was in correspondence with and influenced Martin Luther King Jr. This is to point out just how completely awful the left is at coalition building. The only person who speaks to this is Chris Hedges, but the ignorance on this issue is astonishing. Can you imagine, a left who ignores the fact that the Civil Rights movement was largely a religiously driven movement and ignores the fact that MLK was a pastor? Right wing pundits are highly funded, and they are hired to create a broad coalition carefully having people look past their differences. This is not happening on the left hardly at all. I have a friend who has always supported left social and economic causes, and she started a theater in the 90’s and the youth she works with are anti-Christian while she is a devoted Catholic. Now imagine what this attitude does on a national scale.

Well i don't see that, not even clashes. We always witness tensions within societies dealing with stress. A war means war-like preparations, conducts and clashes with the ruling whatever. I don't see signs of that,or efforts to prepare a group bigger than a thousand, or ten thousand. The US is fractioned,yes,and people are fed up with "the system", are indoctrinated or relying on certain ideologies. But becoming a real threat to the system one must motivate, prepare, "gather" and then send enough people (who are willing to give everything for the goal) to fight! Who, where and when? Overestimating "trends" (left and right) and spoken words by some people, even Trump, are not enough signs of a upcoming civil war or civil unrest by the masses. And most people are too lazy, fearful or distracted by other meaningful things in life.
