I think Ineos have designed a boat for higher winds and difficult sea state - they did a similar thing in Auckland and were fast when the conditions suited but slow when it was light. The difference is this time they've managed to get speed in light conditions as well as demonstrate good pace when it gets choppy. Remember also they missed-out on some wins due to unforced errors, some of which were down to software issues. In fact, one area that the Kiwis have a major advantage is software - they're supplying it and they know how to set it up and tweak it.

And..........if by some strange anomaly, someone who designed that software had a back door entry to the said software?

Thanks, i think we can expect similar improvement curves for all teams. Ineos imo brought forward preplanned improvements.

As an American who was in Newport for several America’s Cup series, including the Australian win in 1983, I’d love to see the British boat win it this time! 😎 But yes, I’ll be rooting for American Magic…. 🫣

I'm sure those recumbent cyclist on AM are efficient for aero and steady power but I can't see how they can generate as much peak power during the transitions. The ability to stand on your pedals when really going for it can't be underestimated for more watts in short bursts. Time will tell but I think its a bit of a technological cul-de-sac.

I haven't seem any cyclors standing up. If the power data is released as the protocol says it should be then we will get to the bottom of this. Even if it is after the event I hope they do.
@jamesaron1967
@jamesaron1967 Ай бұрын
Like the other commenter stated no cyclors have been viewed standing. I haven't seen them and they don't need to. The standard cycling position offers high-power delivery. Recumbent positioning is at least 20% lower. Every team has the same number of cyclors. That's really all that needs to be said.
@weatheranddarkness
@weatheranddarkness Ай бұрын
@@jamesaron1967 usually stated as closer to 10%. I'd be more concerned about the fact that they're facing the wrong way to get a good supply of air. All that apparent wind is blowing over their heads from behind.
@jamesaron1967
@jamesaron1967 Ай бұрын
@@weatheranddarkness In recumbent circles it's never accepted to be only 10%. Just ask anyone who rides both positions with power meters. If it was merely 10% the discrepancy wouldn't have been such a hot topic all these decades among 'bent riders. The topic is too broad and complex to go into any detail here and will leave it at that. Regarding airflow, AM also installed fairings over the cyclor openings to improve streamlining. The setup on that yacht is great for aerodynamics but wondering at what cost...?

It is interesting that they are losing races by falling off the foils. Which is perhaps easy to do unnecessarily. That might be consistent with not wanting to play all their "hold cards" when it doesn't matter, yet. On the other hand, it is interesting that according to TS a year ago (per video here on YT) they intentionally chose a foil that is faster but only when they have enough wind to stay up. That might have been a stupid choice. If it's not windy. Unfortunately, it is not windy.

Whoever is against American manic needs to drag them in a tacking duel. Their cyclor sounded like he was about to drop over the mic when they got into a tacking duel.

Absolutely nothing to gain by sandbagging. Those who claim that's what any team except NZ is doing should provide reasons.

@@PatNanai-bw2kf I appreciate your spirit, but maybe call for a threepeat when you've only won two in a row so far? Oracle only won two in a row, Alinghi only won two in a row. IMO foiling and matchracing are not very exciting to watch. I miss boat and sail handling. I miss boats being in the water instead of above. Maybe I am just old.. but Americas Cup in Australia was amazing ✌️

Matt what still amazes me is that people like you have forgotten about the difference between NZL 92 and NZL 95. Who is to say that the older Ineous is not faster than the later Ineous? Newer doesn't make better

It's a development race... What happened 2 weeks ago is inconsequential. It's down to who can make the right changes to their boats and how they sail as a team. At the moment you'd have to say INEOS have the steepest upward development curve but that can change very quickly.
@weatheranddarkness

@@colinhare4722 always risks from any team of only managing sideways rather than upward development too, so regardless it can still go any way.

Thanks for the updates 😃 I think American Magic have got it wrong with their cyclors. They just went too far out of the box. Both mentally and physically for the cyclists as in facing the wrong and being in a recumbent position. I know that it shouldn't matter but that's another layer added to their mental game. I think you just feel more part of the action if you can see something in the direction you are wanting to go. Performance wise we are seeing it in front of our eyes. Their gains in aerodynamics maybe cancelled out in pushing the boat out too far. 🚵🚴‍♂🚴‍♀🚴
