As a life long armchair sailor, thank you for covering this race. Bloody awesome. I live on the coast of the Southern Ocean in Western Australia ( about 34° South). It can be a terrifying place, even in Summer. I've been below 40° South, on a great circle course, many years ago, in January (mid summer). It was below 10 degrees Celsius on deck and the swell was massive. In those days, Albatrosses were still plentiful. One of the best experiences of my life. But I wasn't alone on a sailboat! Extraordinary courage combined with technology to race solo down there. Sorry to rant, but it truly is a special event.

Just crazy the amount of sail these yachts can carry with the ocean foils. Good luck everyone racing!

Fascinating reviews of the competition, the other sailors and the boats themselves! I'd love to see an in-depth documentary about the differences in hull design within the rules to better understand what Sam is saying

Was passing and took a look. The place was heaving and it's 2 weeks away. Pretty amazing how big this is in France.

I cannot wait for the next race. The video of them on the race in real time is really something along with the computer displays as to where everyone is and has been. It is complicated and requires luck. Anything can happen and you are alone. It is a real mind game as he described.

very interesting interview with well thought out questions as always. Thanks a lot. Very curious how this VG will pan out. Regarding Boris: Yes, he has optimized his boat for brutal southern ocean conditions, and if i'm not wrong this boar holds the 24 h distance world record, but Malizia demonstrated good performances also in lighter conditions and in various breezes, as you mentioned. Can't wait to see all Imocas in action.

I love your commentry on all the major sailing events. What I don't understand: The Vendee Globe is often called "The Everest of the sea" or "Hardest offshore race". What about the Golden Globe Race? Less technic, but a lot harder than the Vendee in my eye. Can you explain its to me? Regards

For me the toughest is the GGR. The Vendee globe while very interesting is a formula one race where everyone can track each other. Not so easy but not the true sailing GGR.

with the amount of Dismasting's we are seeing in the Imoca class "at least 7 in 23-2024" and properly a few more during the Vendée Globe 2024. Have you heard any rummer's of a new mast / upgrade in the works. as it's starting to look like it may not be up to the task of foiling Imoca.
@johnmcmillen4540

This! I think too there must be adjustments to the mast regarding foiling imocas...

Do the foals make it more or less likely that they will hit obstacles or wild animals?
@patjolly
@patjolly 22 күн бұрын
More likely, alhough it is more accurately the speed generated by the foils that leads to collisions with wildlife

It would be useful if most of that 45000 kms was flying on foils. Its also very much like kite surfing. The sails are so big they do function like low flying kites. The captain who can manage that kite and the great speeds generated will definitely be flying not sailing 😊
