Must be a 90's build. First rifle i ever bought with my own money was a Mini 14 Ranch. Paid about $400 for it at Wal-Mart if you can believe that. About as accurate as a worn AK. Wouldn't feed mags reliable unless they were factory and during the ban factory 20 rounders and 30 rounders were unobtainable. I also probably spent at least $500 on the rifle trying to get it to be more accurate and better looking. Probably spent $1k in aftermarket mags that Wouldn't work. A lot of love hate with that rifle.

My problem with the mini-14 isn't that it's not a good rifle. It's that it's way to expensive for what it is.
@joeyassyrian
@joeyassyrian Жыл бұрын
It's a low production gun without the same scale and manufacturing process as the AR-15. Many of the parts are cast. The trigger is much better than the average mil-spec AR-15, also the barrel is cold hammer forged which is nothing really something you see in sub $1,000 AR-15s outside of Ruger's own MPR. If you can pick one up for $850 (blued version), it's not a bad deal if you're looking for something outside of an AR. It's much more fun to shoot in my opinion but still would revert to an AR-15 for any serious use due to the lack of parts to service the Mini-14, cost of magazines, manual of arms, mounting solutions, etc.

Back in the day I worked briefly in a gun store. There were more high quality rifle imports than I could shake a stick at. I can’t help but to think that the extraordinary popularity of the M4 type stuff was helped greatly by all that other stuff getting banned at one point.
@ericsmith5919
@ericsmith5919 Жыл бұрын
@Ed T It had more to do with the US military using it since the 60s. Vietnam, the Gulf War, GWOT and all the movies made about them pushed the M16/M4 into the public consciousness. There was never going to be a way for imports to compete against domestically produced AR-15s on price, and price has a lot to do with popularity. If a rifle is maybe 10% better than an AR-15 but costs 4 times as much, most people are going to save their money and just buy the AR-15.

There's only one thing a politician fears: losing the next election. Canadians are so leftist/liberal that any talk of restoring gun rights is utterly hopeless at this juncture. Thanks for another fun video. Boyds makes really nice looking laminated wood stocks for the Mini-14! They also make the them for other rifles. Skinner Sights makes a clever rail that replaces the bottom forward stock mount. It makes a great way to mount a tactical light. This makes the Mini-14 a better home defence carbine. Also G G & G makes a nice sturdy sight rail that uses the ring mount slots. Great for mounting a 1-4x scope! The Mini-14 can be a devastating CQB rifle! In the 1986 FBI Miami Firefight The Bad Guy Platt was able to take out an FBI stake out squad. 2 Agents died ar the scene. 3 were Seriously wounded. And 2 were wounded. Fortunately Agent Mireles was able to finish the Fight. He killed the 2 bad guys who were already fatally wounded, but still going. The FBI Blamed the failure of the 9mm and this lead to the adoption of the 10 mm. Which lead to the .40 S&W. It also resulted in better tactics for law enforcement! Agent Edmundo Mireless, the Hero of the gun fight wrote a must read book; 'FBI Miami Firefight Five Minutes That Changed the Bureau' This book debunks a lot of the arm chair warriors analysis. But also shows the failures of FBI tactics. Don't under estimate the effectiveness of the Mini-14!!

@@alanhigh8125 the new ruger stocks do not use the reinforcements either. The laminated wood is much less likely to warp or become loose. If you're worried buy the new Rugers with the synthetic stock. The latest generation of Ruger Mini-14s are much better. More accurate! They don't have re enforcements either. My 1944 Inland M1 .30 carbine has been to hell and back. The wood is still tight. My Remington 1944 1903 A3 is in very good condition. Still not warped or loose. I knew a WWII Marine Veteran who fought on Guadalcanal and Saipan. He told me he carried an 03 A3. Great man. But he suffered from severe PSTD. He had survivors guilt. Yes! Just what I’ve been waiting for.. I’ve been shooting an AR of one sort or another since I was 10, now 50. Just think, there must be hundreds of thousands of us in our 50’s that fell in love with the AC .556 with the A-team. Honestly, it’s the only one I’ve ever wanted, and I started out with a 10/22. Just never pulled the trigger to make a clone.

You can also get a five round magazine. Here in Kentucky for deer hunting you cannot have more than five rounds in the rifle at a time and I think you really have to have the five round magazine to make it legal. then again my version is the Mini 30 so at least for it there is a five round magazine.

I've always loved the LEO versions of the Mini 14 with the folding stocks. They just looked really trick. I've also seen some that are in a different stock setup that looks just like the M14 EBR and they look equally as cool. I get performance. Reliability,and cost should be the main considerations in purchasing a firearm,but the fact that they slick slick and aesthetically pleasing is a bonus.

Bill Ruger is the genius that came up with the 'high capacity' magazine limit. To save the wooden stocked, normal looking Mini-14 from being banned by name on the '94 AW ban, he recommended limiting magazine capacity for guns that did not have enough evil features to make the list. That is also when Ruger stopped selling the folding stocked Mini and the 20 and 30 round magazines to the public.

I'm the same age as Tim and remember how the Mini-14 was more popular than the AR-15 back in the 1980s due to its lower cost and more traditional appearance. How things have changed. Now the Mini-14 is an overpriced dinosaur mostly popular with those who can't legally buy an AR. I bought my first AR-15 and Mini-14 at the same time! Later on I still had only one Mini-14, but several more AR-15's before I lost them all in an unfortunate boating accident. I didn't like the design of the trigger assembly, the trigger guard can loosen and the whole thing will fall out over time (watch Mac's disassembly to see the design flaw). It fell out at the range and I had to fix it-twice. The second fix seemed to have worked. Other than that, I liked it.

@zues287
@zues287 9 ай бұрын
I love AR's, but forward assists are dumb. It's a solution to a problem that shouldn't have existed, and doesn't exist anymore. It was a terrible solution to the issues the early rifles had and the fact that GI's were told the rifle never needed to be cleaned. If the round doesn't want to go in, get it the hell out of there. If it won't chamber, there's a problem with the rifle or the ammo. Trying to jam a round in the chamber that doesn't want to go in is the last thing you'd want to do. I've been shooting ARs for years. Not once have I ever needed to use the forward assist, not would I try to if the round wouldn't chamber.

Fun Fact: The Ruger Mini-14 actually came about from a conversation Mr. William Ruger had with a driver of the Car/Limo Service he used if he needed to go anywhere during or for company business. The one driver, ( never did know his name) was a Vietnam Veteran & apparently would talk about guns with Mr Ruger during their drive/time in the vehicle. In a Nutshell the Vet mentioned that a M-14 style Rifle in a 5.56 as opposed to 7.62 would be a cool Rifle. And Bill Ruger evidently gave it some serious thought & that is how the Mini-14 came to be. We read this I think it was back in the ‘80’s , it was a sidebar story that briefly mentioned that Bill Ruger donated some Mini-14’s that went for service during the Rhodesian Bush Wars, from his conversations with Robert Brown from S.O.F. Magazine about the apparent need for equipment.

Love my Mini. Stainless with black synthetic stock. Classic look, tons of fun to shoot, feels great. Haven't changed anything on it and don't plan to. Kicks brass 500 feet out. Also like my AR, but I didn't like it as it came. Had to customize it. An Aimpoint, stock swap, grip & vertical grip, and a couple little aesthetic changes later I like it equally to the Ruger. Usually if I'm firing 5.56 at the range I take both and split the ammo 50/50. Don't understand why so many guys feel the need to draw a line in the sand and think they have to pick one or the other.
