/ * Yes, they always get something wrong about Russia. Like that it is okay to be late for dinner in Russia or that in Russia you shouldn't eat all plate of you don't want it to be refilled. In Russia it is NOT okay to be late for dinner nor will anyone refill your plate without asking. If we see a person looks satisfied, we don't usually ask to refill a plate. Only when a person looks hungry we do that.

They really messed up the analogy for tipping. A better one would be comparing it to a bribe to be treated better than anyone else. This is how Americans used to see tips but restaurant owners kept cutting wages for the servers and negotiated loopholes in the laws to allow them to pay less than minimum wage. With the low pay servers had to take tips to get by and over time it became common place and expected.

I never really noticed the 'loud American' thing until I went travelling round Europe, and it's definitely a thing. I remember a specific occasion where I was on the train in Prague and it was quiet and everyone was minding their own business, then a bunch of Americans get on and it was so ridiculously loud for no reason. The rest of the people on the train kind of sighed and were looking at each other rolling their eyes.

I've been friendd with Asians most of my life, in particular Japanese and Koreans. To them, telling your friend that they put on weight or that they look bad is seen as looking out for your friend. While an American friend may not comment on your weight, a Korean will as it means they care about you and want to make sure that you're okay

I think part of it is how we grow up, if you are a naturally quiet person in America it's considered weird and in school you're encouraged to be more like your extroverted peers. A loud, (but of course not too obnoxious) extroverted, confident person is seemingly the standard

I'm seen as super weird.. when I keep to myself.. am quiet or too polite and dress to the point I look weird with so much clothes on. Showing no skin. would I do fine in a different country? Probably not. When I am making fun conversation and laugh I am told I am then too loud and obnoxious. >_

@khaosklub

No, you see, you're addressing the sociability of a person. The topic isn't about how much you talk, it's about the volume at which you do speak. If you speak regularly with classmates, but speak at a respectable volume, you're not referred to as a "quiet person". Quiet people are anti-social people who don't initiate conversation and avoid social engagement. Very different things. Our society promotes social behaviors, but it doesn't promote volume control, that's the problem.

Most of the things that have been mentioned in this video are rude in America too. Being loud and obnoxious, sending food back, complaining, and kissing in public could all be considered extremely rude in many states. Agreed. I live in NYC. Despite the reputation of people from NY being loud and abrasive, we do have societal taboos as well. I have seen people making out on a crowded sidewalk and heard responses of (two different instances) "You're blocking the sidewalk, if you're going to do that, do it in the street" (implying it's very rude and they should be hit by a car) and "People are eating, take that inside" (A lot of workers get pizza or other street food for lunch that they eat on the sidewalk). I know that may sound harsh to some, but it's the generally accepted tone of the sense of humor here. Most people are far more cautious and polite when speaking to someone who we know (or in most cases suspect) isn't local.

Just yesterday I was at a self-checkout at the supermarket, I had paid by card and was waiting for my receipt to print.I held my hand out waiting for it but before it had printed the young group of female Chinese students came bundling in behind me and pushed my hand out of the way with their horrible cans of energy drinks. Not a word or a glance at me, they just descended unto me trying to push me out of the way so they can get their disgusting sweets and fizzy drinks back to their dorm. No space to move, all yelling at each other, right in my ear, in a language I don't understand while surrounding me. Honestly, no American would ever do that.

The "rude" of it comes from how the message is interpreted. In some cultures asking for them to take it back to get something fixed/changed could be a great insult to them cuz it might feel like you're disrespecting them or trying to act like you are better than them. I would hope that's not what you ever intended, but such a message could be sent when you think you are being perfectly fair. Hence his comment on how to politely ask for a change.

It probably should be noted that in Asian cultures knowing another person's age is vital to understanding not only how much respect they are due, but in some cases, literally what words are used to address them. While living in South Korea, one of my co-teachers was surprised that I considered him an actual friend as he was over a decade younger than I am. Friendships are not usually beyond one's own age group, and marriages doubly so. (Although there are certain specific differences in ages that are considered auspicious.)

I work as a security guard in a supermarket. In all my years of experience regarding American tourists, most of them come off as polite, nice and just regular people. Exept for the ones that don't understand that 'the costumer is always right' rule doesn't apply everywhere outside the USA. Like expecting the cashier to bag the items, or using the products before payment. (I'm Icelandic btw) Ofcourse in most cases, it's enough for me to just explain that it's not how we do things here and usually they understand. But when they don't, they really, really don't. Anyway people are different and I know that the States is a diverse place so whatever I guess... Never been myself but it's definetly on my bucket list :) Great video

Hrólfur Leó I'm American and that attitude pisses me off too hahah How you behave to someone on the clock is a good indicator of how you really are, I think. When people are rude to people for just doing their job, it makes me cringe, and I think Americans are really bad about that. Don't get me wrong, I love my country! I just think it's something a lot of us do wrong. Even my own mother, whom I absolutely love, is a bit of a bad tourist and customer. She's super sweet to most, but when she orders, she says things like "give me" instead of "may I have," and it irks me so much! Or she'll complain about minuscule things, and I just have to tell her to suck it up and be polite. She's a really sweet woman I swear, just a bad tourist. Anyway this comment is too long

Eating food before purchase in America is entirely dependent on locale. In some areas, it's recognized people are in a rush and is thus considered normal for them to munch in line, as they're going to purchase anyway. In other areas, it's a good way to get a conversation with law enforcement and a building you can't enter, with a potential free night in the county motel. Always know the etiquette for the state you're in (and stay away from California as I think they're working on regulating breathing because it emits carbon dioxide gas).

The whole being late thing I don't get. Maybe it because I am America but I was taught that it is rude to make people wait for you if you can help it. the loud thing I agree is a pain. As for how much skin is too much depends on who is the judge and whether you actually have clothes on. If you don't have any clothes on then too much skin. Making out in public gets you accused of being a streetwalker with a client. Tipping in my family has been a reward for a job well done and we give what we can.

Interesting video. Thanks! I'm raised in Sweden and I went to Germany on a field trip for German class not too long ago. The first thing I said when arriving at the airport was "Why is everyone screaming? Why is everyone drinking beer?". I mean, it was not a particularly large airport... (Düsseldorf-Weeze). My German teacher explained to us that Swedes are known for being very quiet and calm at all times, which German's aren't. She also explained that drinking in public to such an extent, as in Germany, is not really done in Sweden (kind-of taboo), but in Germany it's nothing to worry about.

The complaining in the UK thing is often hugely misunderstood. British people like to be super polite, and so will only tend to complain to the restaurant if it's really bad. However, that won't stop the British person ranting about how bad it is for the next week, or stop them sending a strongly worded letter, or leaving a terrible review. In those situations, there isn't the same social pressure or the chance to see the reaction. British people complain *constantly*... if anything, I'd argue even more than Americans. They just don't like confrontation and lean towards politeness in person.

I'm British and lived in the US for a few years when I was younger. Their attitude in restaurants were so strange. One woman my family new ordered her daughter a meal, which she started to eat and then said she didn't want any more after she had eaten half of it. The mother then told the restaurant that she wasn't paying for it, demanded AND GOT a refund for the meal.

As a waitress in the US that attitude is considered very rude. I've had it happen to me. It's one thing to take a few bites and to know you don't like the food at all but to eat half of your meal to then demand a refund is outrageous. Sometimes the refund is given just to end the situation, but that's never the ideal choice. Usually the customer will be thrown out.

Within the U.S. things can be weird in different parts of the country. I grew up in NJ and some time in NY, and the first time I traveled further south than VA, I was walking with my family and had gotten a little ahead of them when a young man who was walking another way just stopped and began talking to me. He wasn't rude or flirting with me, just chatting for a minute, but I was a little concerned. I assumed he must have been drinking to stop and talk to a stranger, I was polite, but standoffish. After he walked off, I saw a woman who had seen us talking while waiting to cross the street and I joked that there must be a bar nearby, so she gave me directions to one. I was baffled at that point, but when my husband joined me, I told him, and he was like " oh that's just because we're down south, people are friendlier." I think that's great, it's much more laid back in the south.

Just saying, in the UK, don't talk to people unless its something like asking directions. We'd be happy to help then, but never talk to a stranger on public transport. It's not 'rude', per say, but the person you are speaking to will most likely be uncomfortable and not-so-discretly use body language to tell you to go away. Also never sit/stand/whatever next to someone when there is clearly space somewhere else.

As an American that seems weird. It's annoying if someone sits next to you when there are other empty spots but not a big deal or something you think much about after ten seconds. And not talking to people here in the Midwest would make you look rude and stuck up like you thought you were better than those around you. I love studying how cultures differ! Specifically I'm from the Ozarks in Missouri, which has a distinctly different culture than say Northern Missouri or Michigan. Even in the US, there's a huge difference between an average Midwesterner and someone from Boston, the Ozarks, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, NYC, the Appalachian mountains....all very different cultures.

Sending food back is perfectly acceptable in Europe, as far as my experience goes anyway, being that I live here. The only reason people have been kicked out of high end restaurants for asking for salt or ketchup is because you're insulting the chef by saying that their food requires extra flavour when it doesn't, but that's only in very classy, Michelin star type ones. The rest of us don't want you to eat bad food just because some video told you its taboo.

It’s only specific kinds of Americans who cause trouble or loud in a different country. Most good and nice Americans aren’t loud in or out of their own country. Tipping in America is usually out of kindness or acknowledgment of a good job. Then there are stereotypes of Americans like everybody is overweight or everybody is a cowboy with a truck. Those aren’t 100% true. There are practically no “cowboys” as foreigners seem to see and make stereotypes. Though we do have a high obesity rate, there are still plenty of healthy Americans. Also the stereotypes we have of foreigners that are kinda true like SOME Japanese/Chinese tourists are obnoxious and take photos of everything from monuments in Washington D.C. to photos of the poor or taking photos near a dead bird(which I’ve seen before in the city) But the point of my long rant(which you can criticize or talk about I really do not care) is not all Americans are bad people or obnoxious. America is different, just like Germany, Russia, brazil, Spain, Japan, Greece, France, etc.

The problem with Americans is that, they know there is world that exists outside of the US, but they don't realise the rest of the world doesn't operate like the US. For example, I work in security in an international airport (in Europe) and on a daily basis I deal with Americans who don't realise other countries have different rules, and they always refer to the TSA. I'm not saying you should learn everything about it, because discovering and opening your mind to a new culture is a big part of a traveling, but just a minimal amount of information to get a general idea of the culture. While I agree. Respect does go both ways. Anytime I have ever spent time with a foreigner and see them doing something that would be considered rude in my country, I try to politely explain to them what they did wrong instead of getting all pissed/offended that they didn't know they were being offensive. I honestly think more people would get less offended by foreigners if they just explained what they were doing wrong instead of immediately jumping to offended. Sure people should do their research but chances are you're either going to miss something or you own cultural behavior is going to slip out from time to time.

Maniac Bahamut cat right.. tipping is STILL a choice. It always has been. If someone asks for a tip, they clearly don't deserve it. That's rude. That's like me asking my customers at my job "so are you gonna take the survey and compliment my friendly business? Are you? I deserve it." After asking, no I don't. Yes, you should be friendly and nice. But do it out of wanting to do your job good. Not because you get paid more. And don't ask people to tip you, it's rude. Expecting a good tip every time is rude. And from this person's comment, the waiter stood there waiting? That's really rude. Foreigners should NOT have to feel guilty to not tipping when it's not something they do. That's our culture, not theirs. I don't agree with our culture, but still. Pushing it in them and making them feel bad is messed up.

I'm Portuguese and living in the country's capital means having to deal with tourists aplenty and I'm afraid American tourists are indeed obnoxious. Part of it is that they come in huge groups and seem unable to realize that what to them is just 'pretty historical neighborhood' is 'place where shop/live/run errands/work', which means we cannot afford to just stand stock-still in the middle of a busy street gaping at whatever. I understand they are enjoying the sights and to be fair, other tour groups do this as well but in my experience it is usually middle age Americans who are more prone to just completely block pedestrian traffic going "wow" without realizing how great a nuissance they are. Also, Portugal is not Spain. Stop trying to thank me in Spanish, it comes across as absolutely rude. Why even bother to visit the country if you can't even bother to distinguish it from its neighbor, might as well just go to Spain. Everytime an American goes 'gracias' on me I do correct them because it drives absolutely insane. More, we understand English fairly well so...try not to comment on Portuguese people, very loudly, as if no-one could possibly know what you are saying. This is a sub-set pet peeve that does not happen quite as often but I had one American seriously ask me if "I'd heard about Jesus", at which point I burst out laughing. My country was selling 'Jesus' all around the world before theirs was even thought of.

I wouldn't call Americans lazy but odds are they are perceived as such because the country suffers from a serious obesity problem. You can even notice it here, whenever you see a large tour group of mostly white people, you can tell from a distance- even before you hear them- if they are American, simply because they are way fatter than their counterparts. From there to assuming they are lazy is a small step- not an accurate elation, by any means, but one people are very prone to do. Actually, Americans only represent a small portion of our tourists, odds are we'd do just fine without them, to be honest. Not that I want them gone, I am actually glad they visit the country and as long as they don't trip on my feet I welcome them gladly and very often find myself giving directions. And to be fair, the tourists who cause the greatest hassle are probably the English. English tourists are probably still the largest demographic to visit the country (I think? At least it has been for a long time) and while the great majority of them (and I need to emphasize this, the vast majority is not just harmless but polite and easy to get along with) are great, there are those who come here to get drunk on cheap alcohol. Alcoholic drinks being expensive in their country of origin, they flock to Portugal to get drunk out of their asses and end up being not just a nuissane but a danger to the community. They cause disturbances, harass the locals there have been times when the police has to intervene. I do not get much contact with this subsect as they usually roam South and bypass Lisbon altogether but when it comes to rude, awful and borderline criminal behavior, they take the cake.

How is it considered rude to show up on time? If you agree to meet someone at a specific time, do them the courtesy of being there. This not only shows that you respect how valuable their time is, but it's also just more efficient for everyone! At the same time, life happens, so don't completely lose it on someone if they're a few minutes late, but certainly don't disregard punctuality completely. Jeez.
@diegouzeda2491
@diegouzeda2491 6 жыл бұрын
August here in Brazil it´s not that punctuality is disregarded but being late is tolerated. In meetings people expect more punctuality than in house parties where I think being on time is considered somehow to be "anxious". Different from USA here most parties don´t tend to have a time to finish here - except if you rented the place. Those are cultural occurrences that date back 200 years ago from the time Brazil was a colony and the "important' people made you wait for them.

That's just how it works. I was in Italy with my girlfriend on vacation, and we were visiting some of our Florentine friends there to go bar hopping, and we showed up on time and the girl who planned the whole thing was like "why are you so early?" And most of the other people showed up 15-30 minutes late. Same thing in Spain and France from what I've seen. You aren't really expected to be on time in those countries, so most people there find it surprising when you're on time because that's early to them.

Most people understand that visitors may not share cultural standards. What makes an 'ugly American' is being flatly dismissive of these cultural differences or believing that anything other than our own standards are inferior. While many other cultures will disapprove of certain behaviors, they are often non-confrontational about the offense, where Americans tend to become emotional and confrontational when they feel slighted. Even in many cultures with very conservative norms, the average person doesn't see it as their duty to correct the person, while Americans won't hesitate to get in someone's face.

With tipping, in the UK it is expected to tip ~10% in most restaurants but the wait staff are paid reasonable wages so if the service is terrible it is sometimes considered ok to tip less (tipping a bit more for good service is generally well received, but the US norm of 20% is already a lot). Pubs are different because historically they are "public houses" and there's a conceit that the pub is the landlord's house and you're just covering their costs rather than paying for a service. This means tipping's generally seen negatively so the traditional way of rewarding good service is to offer to buy "one for yourself" (which the barman will usually "take later" by keeping the money rather than actually buying themselves a drink); it's pretty rare though so you're never going to put someone out by not doing so.

First off, we don't use 'bucks' in the UK, so you should get that right before commenting on a post from another country whose current language and currency you clearly know nothing about! ;) It doesn't make for a good argument and indicates that merely looking to irritate as many people as you can while having nothing useful to contribute. And $3 an hour is nothing, so I don't know what point you're trying to make by bringing that up; a salary like that is a reason to tip waiters. I'm just saying that American tourists visiting the UK shouldn't be afraid to tip because it is still appreciated! :) Anyway, no need to reply aggressively to unoffensive posts. I hope you relieved yourself of that anger that you clearly needed to get out by trying to insult strangers on the internet?
