True. My mother used to start soaking the dried fruit on January 1st. She would use the leftover sherry and port got in for Christmas, any gifted alcohol like Tia Maria and one year Courvosier. She would top off with whiskey as required as there would always be a bottle of that in the house in case anyone was in pain or died (Irish household) . The soaking fruit would be stirred every few weeks but other than that nothing happened until October 😊

These days you can cheat and buy brandy soaked fruit in Lidl's!
@maryholden3136Сағат бұрын
@richardbrown7153 there's cheats worth doing..... and some aren't. A big part of the Christmas pudding experience being pleasurable is the feeling of connection with those who have gone before you.. remembering my mother, my aunt Anne, both grandmothers and the stories they told me about their childhood and their Christmases. Everyone has put their own twist on the basic recipe and everyone has tales of how they subbed something in when unable to get something. And I don't think I could use an open half bottle of sherry next year

The slab toffee is a traditional Bonfire Night treat. We all had these hammers in our cutlery drawers when I was a kid in Yorkshire. My mum used to sometimes make her own toffee slab, using dark treacle (molasses for Americans). Mince pies are best warm, fresh made, out of the oven, with double cream. Again, these were often home made on Christmas Eve.The Snow Dog is in the 2nd Snowman cartoon. Many companies make Yule Logs, they vary greatly in taste etc. some are very good, some not so. Things are served hot because it is the middle of winter, & everyone needs warming up. Well done ladies, good video. Merry Christmas 🎄

Custard is normally thick like gravy, put the amount of custard powder recommended by Birds in a measuring jug, if I remember correctly, 2 table spoons of Custard powder with 1 table spoon of sugar, mix to a smooth paste with around 100 ml of warm milk, now you're preference of milk or water comes into play and the thickness you would prefer, with hot water it's easier to add more to make it thinner, with hot milk you have to follow the instructions on the packet or container, when you have the perfect mix, I use a whisk to mix the hot water or milk under, don't worry if you have left over, it tastes great cold too, and instead of double cream on the mince pies use Custard, and lots of it, another thing for the use of Custard and whipped cream is trifle, lovely grub.

Yule Logs vary a lot. Tesco has Belgian chocolate logs and a very chocolatey outer frosting. We also have fresh whipped cream filling and it's served chilled. Swiss rolls and Yule logs are among the first things I learned to cook at school. 😂 Home made logs usually have a branch extending from one side.

Mince pies are better warmed and served with a large dollop of double or brandy cream, Your Custard needed to be thicker. Aldi do a very good Christmas Pudding that has a whole caramelised orange in the middle.

Double cream always comes fresh in a carton, i guess the glass jar was for export and has possibly been heat-treated to delay going off. Christmas pudding is best served with a little spirit poured over the top and set on fire; it is a spectacle and burns off the alcohol and adds more flavour to the pudding. The custard is a ‘poor man’s topping’ and needed to be as thick as the double cream, but you can’t beat clotted cream from Devon or brandy/rum butter with the pud.

That was not custard lol my father showed me the best way to make birds custard measure out your custard powder add sugar to preference then add small amount of milk to form a paste. Heat milk to just before boiling then add milk to the custard paste stirring all the time. Then you get thick creamy custard without burning the custard
@adelucas482418 сағат бұрын
I was wondering if they followed the recipe instructions. It's not supposed to pour that badly. Or taste like that
@LilMonkeyFella8718 сағат бұрын
I think that is what it says to do on the box
@adelucas482418 сағат бұрын
@LilMonkeyFella87 There is a knack to it though. As Tony said, you mix your custard and sugar into a paste, heat the milk until it's almost boiling, then add it to the paste a little at a time, stirring constantly otherwise you get lumps. Then pop it on the stove and slowly bring it to the boil and allow the custard to thicken. It looks like Debbie didn't boil it long enough for the corn starch to thicken and make the custards signature texture. We've actually got lazy over here these days and buy it ready made in cartons and tins.
@tonyd39275 сағат бұрын
@@adelucas4824 Do it right you should not have to put it on the heat. Putting it back on the heat you risk burning the custard then it is only fit for the bin

The abundance of dairy products is the one thing I miss since I emigrated. Where I am now it is only milk powder or sterilised I do miss pasteurised milk, I good sherry trifle, going to the local bakery and choosing my weekly cream cake treat be it an elephants foot custard slice, vanilla slice even an eclair, an egg custard would be nice too, not to mention apple and blackberry pie with THICK custard, apple crumble and how many admit to a nice bowl of banana and custard allowed to set in the fridge hell even bread and butter pudding sounds good right now.

Never a bought one, they're so easy to make - a swiss roll and chocolate icing textured by stroking it with a fork then sieve icing sugar over the top to look like snow. Great for the kids to do and get a quality looking cake. Feeling a bit more adventurous? Cut off one end at an angle, turn it around and add to the long side of the main trunk and there's a fork in the branch.

Merry Christmas Natasha and Debbie, sorry to hear that your mum passed on Christmas day 2018 Natasha it must make it a very hard day for you but I'm sure your mum would want you to enjoy the day and in doing so remember the fun Christmas days you had together and in that way she will never truly be gone because she is forever in your thoughts and heart at this time of year and throughout it as well. The mince pies are better when slightly warm and the cream is runny. Christmas pudding is dependant on who makes it as there are many variants on how they are made. I used to make my yule log and would slice a piece off the end at an angle and attach it to the side as a branch and then cover it in a nice rich chocolate. My dinner will be turkey, roast tatties, brussels, parsnips and carrots with homemade stuffing, pigs in blankets cranberry sauce and gravy then some Christmas pud for afters

It'll be the first Christmas in our 44 years of marriage this year, that we haven't bought a Turkey. Having brought up 4 children we've been used to buying a larger than average turkey to eat over the Christmas period. Now though, since they all have their own families and are not all located nearby anymore, we can often find ourselves feeding just the two of us for most days over the Christmas period, and last year we bought far too much meat and ended up throwing almost half the turkey away. This year we've bought a turkey crown instead. As a family though, we do have larger than average appetites so we supplement our Christmas meat purchases with a decent sized leg of pork, and a small cooked smoked ham, the latter being mainly used for cold cuts. The two of us will be joined by just one of our daughters for lunch tomorrow, and our meal will comprise: roast turkey breast, roast pork, pigs in blankets (smoked streaky bacon wrapped around Cumberland chipolata sausages,) sage, onion & pork sausage meat stuffing, mashed potato, roasted potatoes, brussel sprouts, honey roasted parsnips, glazed carrots, seasoned turkey gravy, together with bread sauce (for those that like it,😋) and cranberry sauce (for those that can stomach it!😝) Dessert will be sticky toffee pudding, though my wife is very partial to Tiramisu so we'll probably serve that as an alternative dessert.

A warm mince pie with brandy butter and a glass of Scotch malt whiskey in front of a log fire = Christmas eve heaven.

As soon as the Mince Pies are out get a pack a week and have one a day 😋 Christmas Pudding haven’t had for years as have Panettone instead but when I did the best thing was to leave some to go cold and put it in the fridge overnight and have it cold the next day. It’s harder texture but the flavour seems deeper / richer 😎

When I much younger in the 50’s I always remember my mother who incidentally made her own Christmas pudding steaming it in the copper. Something you wouldn’t see these days. She would have all the ingredients marinating in a large jar for maybe 9 months of the year then on Christmas Day she would put the contents of the jar into a cloth and tie a knot at the top and put that into a large bowl. Then she would put the bowl inside the copper and steam it.

I've tried most of the items, though possibly different brands. I love Christmas pudding and mince pies. We buy two puddings, one for Christmas Day and one for Easter Sunday. Lots of traditions around the pudding such as when it is made, who and in which direction to stir the mixture, number and type of ingredients, and including items like a silver coin in the pudding. As for the toffee tray, yes, it's great fun to hit it with the hammer, and years ago you didn't get the bag to put it in so it did tend to get scattered. This year we are having the usual: turkey, roast and boiled potatoes, veg, pigs in blankets, roast parsnips, followed by Christmas pud and custard. Merry Christmas, ladies.
