As a Brit I find it hilarious when Cristine was adamant she doesn't say "aboot" while consistently pronouncing it "aboot" throughout the podcast.

I think they're hearing it as a strong "u" sound instead of the cross between "o" and "u" I normally hear Canadians pronounce.

As a Canadian from a similar region as Cristine and Ben, I’m not disputing what your saying but I genuinely don’t hear what you guys are hearing. I will say that while there may be a slight difference, I think that the objection comes from the fact that when you say it back to us it sounds so exaggerated that it makes no sense to us anymore.

I am from Cleveland and a sub and a po'boy are different. I think a po'boy has shrimp on it, but in Cleveland, they often have a kielbasa sausage cut in half longways, and sometimes shrimp too.

Louisiana (south as it gets in US) native here- people’s jaw would hit the floor around here if they heard you say “idk what’s a crawfish, a freshwater lobster?” It’s normal in casual conversation to say “have you had any crawfish boils yet this season?” Yes. Crawfish have their own season. It goes hand in hand with Mardi Gras. It’s all a big ole party and very traditional and sacred around here. And there’s a drive through daiquiri shop on every block. It’s hilarious because they give it to you in a “closed container” by keeping the tip of the straw covered by paper.

In a lot of American dialects and ideolects, the terms are not differentiated, but for bakers, they do have distinct meanings.

@@AcornFrog I'm from where Cristine is from. The stuff in the can is labelled frosting, usually meant to smear over a cake. Icing is the decorative piping stuff in a tube. Commercial bakers here may or may not use the same terms, but that's how the retail baking aisle products are labelled.

@@momahl114 it really changes nothing if they said "aboot" or not tho (I must admit I didn't hear it but I was doing something else while listening to the podcast and english is not my first language haha). Everybody has an accent no matter where they're from and what language they talk 👌There is no "good" way to talk the language since it evolved massively from it's original state. It depends on where you speak it and with who. And that's good cause a language that stops evolving is a dead one 😁 Latin for instance.

I definitely call icing and frosting different things. Icing is like a "harder" coating often used on sugar cookies, like it will set in a shape or pattern (like royal icing). Frosting is softer and fluffier and doesn't set

I think is a matter of how familiar you are with cooking/pastry making lingo. Indeed, icing is what you use for cookies or for writing on cakes. Frosting is the fluffy cream for cakes, cupcakes, etc (buttercream, meringue, etc).

As a grad student in linguistics, specifically who is really interested in language variation (so dialects), I loved this episode! And yes, everyone has an “accent” even if you think you don’t! Some of your answers were super interesting, and I love that language gives us such a fascinating insight to our identities. Isn’t language incredible? 😍 Also, fun fact, the phenomena that Americans project about the way Canadians speak is known as Canadian raising. Your vowels sound a bit different to us sometimes, but we tend to exaggerate and play up the difference when bringing it up because it sounds “off” or “wrong” to a standard American English speaker. 😊

I am an armchair linguist. No formal education. But my take on the canadian "aboot" trope is this: Their dipthong of "ou" is "shortened," starting in the middle of the mouth with a long "O" sound, and moving frontward to the "U" sound. Essentially canadians pronounce it like "oh>ooh". And in america, we start the dipthong farther back in our mouths, so it's more like "ah>ooh"

Canadian here with a question for the linguistic student and the armchair linguists. Canada and America are both massive countries, why is it assumed that Canadians only have one collective accent? The southern US and New York accents sound nothing alike, the same applies in Canada. Newfoundland and Saskatchewan sound nothing alike and I tend to think their is more of rural vs urban accents within those l areas Just curious your take on the thinking of a collective Canadian accent.

@@H3110NU great question! I think it’s less that people assume there’s only one accent spoken and more of the idea that people latch onto what’s known as the standard variety of the language. It’s what people hear most often on TV and in popular media, and so it’s what we associate with that country as a whole. Though I would bet many people know and are aware that both the US and Canada have a variety of accents, the one perpetuated the most by Americans is whatever we hear the most and that’s usually the standard (aka whats taught in school) variety of whatever language we listen to. Another example would be people picking up Korean in a Seoul accent because that’s where a lot of popular media comes from, but ofc South Korea has a wide variety of dialects that vary even by province. @@Margar02 pretty much! The phenomena refers to the fact that Canadians “raise” their vowels in their mouths after some consonants. So instead of a vowel coming out as “open” as Americans would say it, it “closes” a bit and therefore sounds different. I’m still learning a lot about it myself, so if anyone has a better, more concise way of explaining it, feel free to chip in!

@@missywoford1809 haha. YES! Snow here is way different here. It never sticks around like it did in Minnesota. Usually within a week it is gone. In Minnesota the temperature usually stays cold enough that after the first big snow fall in November snow is always on the ground until March. Driving here is way different- I'd much rather drive snowy roads in Minnesota -in KC people are all in a stupid hurry and just need to give themselves more time instead of everybody rushing and causing traffic issues.

As a person who’s english is their second language I do think there is such thing as more “neutral accents” like midwestern english speakers are the easiest to understand, I struggle more if someone has a strong southern accent etc. Same with the u.k. I straight up cannot understand some British people but a lot of them have a more neutral, understandable accent.

I just took the quiz and I find my results so interesting! I have moved around most of my life - the first 11ish years of my life I lived in both California and Maryland/VA. Then, around age 11, I moved to Utah, where I lived for ten years. Since then (I'm now 40), I've lived in Maryland and Maine. However, the quiz placed my dialect in Salt Lake City! I truly find that so interesting - even with all the moving around I've done, and living in areas with vastly different dialects, I've still maintained the slight language nuances I picked up from my ten formative years in Utah.

That makes a lot of sense! We learn most of our words before we’re 3 or 4, and our accents continue to develop until we’re young adults! But if we were to move to a different country (with a significant accent difference) for the rest of our lives, there *would* be a slight change if we were already adults, survival mechanisms and all that - caveman brain says similarities = safety, so blending in is 👌🏼 in our subconscious

Quiz placed me in salt lake (and Grand Rapids and somewhere in Minnesota) and I've lived in Ogden Utah my whole life haha (45 mins north of SLC) so it was spot on for me! My parents are from Iowa, so me getting Grand Rapids and Minnesota also makes sense to me too. Crazy it actually guessed where I lived haha. All because of potato bug too!

"The Florida one is throwing me off." truer words have never been said, in or out of context lol. But as a Floridian, linguistically we are bit closer to parts of the north. The further south you go in Florida, the more "northern" the culture gets. I don't know why though. I don't think the New Yorkers and Canadians coming down for the winter are enough to change the language around here that much.

From a baking standpoint, frosting and icing are different. Icing gets kinda hard, is very smooth, thinner than frosting, and dries very shiny. You pipe icing onto sugar cookies. It's made of powdered sugar/confectioners sugar and a liquid (water, condensed milk, or juice). Frosting is thicker and is spread on with an off-set spatula. A frosting can have lots of different ingredients but typically butter or cream cheese is used as the thickening agent when homemade. I cannot attest to what canned frosting is made of. For reference, Frosting is Betty Crocker in a can on the shelf and Icing is in a tube hanging on the wall above the sprinkles in the baking aisle of the grocery store.

in Texas there's drive through places that have alcohol. But there's weird laws about alcohol. Like you can't purchase alcohol until after 10am on Sundays (This just changed from noon a few months ago), and liquor can only be sold in liquor stores. I really like accents! It is interesting that someone can signal where they are from just by the pronunciation of their words.The thing about accents is that everybody has an accent, there is no one without an accent. General American is a specific accent, mostly in line with a midwestern American accent. The Received Pronunciation in a country is a specific accent, often derived from a certain area that is economically and politically important in the country.
