Rachel, Intonation have been the most difficult for me. People in general think that I'm an another country. My intonation have caused me six engaged. People in general do not realizes that intonation is probably one of the most important part of speech.

I love your lessons so much. Thanks a million! Could you please answer these questions: 1. Do thought groups, tone/ rhythm/ intonation units and tune shapes mean the same or different things? 2. Are there tips for practicing speaking English while we can pay attention to rhythm units, tone units and intonation patterns at the same time? 3. How are the sounds /e/ and /æ/ pronounced when they are followed by a plosive/ stop consonant, as in extra, excellent, egg, accurate, accuracy...?
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish Жыл бұрын
Good questions! 1. Yes, the second two sound the same as a thought group, but with a focus on the musical elements of that group. 2. My main tip for this would be to get lots of repeats at different speeds of the same thought group, so you can focus on the different aspects individually, then together. Be patient and record yourself. 3. These vowels will have their usual EH and AA sounds in these cases. Hope this helps!

@GreenVidz209 Ah, ok. Different languages do have different placement, for example, Russian compared to English is further down in the throat and feels deeper than American English. It all depends on your frame of reference.

@rachelsenglish - BRAVA! Great voice! I only discovered the joy of opera three years ago. I really kicked myself for not discovering my passion for it sooner. OK, silly... (a) you are a great educator, (b) you are a great organizer (you know how to organize information in novel and effective ways), (c) you have a great and pleasant presentation style, (d) you have a great voice, and I assume, (e) you have a great passion for singing. To me, it's obvious. Voice lessons on YT / Skype are booming!

Some textbooks say that in an English sentence stressed syllables should be pronounced at regular intervals. Is that true? If so the best way to master the English pronunciation is to use a metronome.
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 6 жыл бұрын
Great question! I think you could use this rule and be understood, however you wouldn't sound very natural! There are definitely different rhythms used in the speech of native speakers, it is not always regular. Practicing with a metronome will probably create a kind of robotic speech pattern.

Thank you so much for this valuable content. I have a question about the difference between sentence stress and intonation. In a sentence we put more emphasis on content words and less on grammatical words so we use a lower pitch with structural words. This is called stress. But we also use rising and falling intonation with some words. Intonation can express our attitude and feelings but the examples you provided for sentence stress might also convey our feelings. For example I saw her at the mall with JOHN. Here we stress John but it expresses my surprise that I cannot believe she went there with JOHN. We can say that both the words we stress might change in a sentence depending on what message we want to convey but also the way we make changes to the pitch we can have the same effect. I would really appreciate it if you could clarify it for me. Thank you
@rachelsenglish

Thanks for being here and thanks for the questions! Word stress within a sentence really does depend on the meaning you want to get across. Here's a playlist that might be helpful: kzbin.info/aero/PLE426E4F7EEBDDCD0

I think intonation, stress and linking are good places to start your American English accent training. I'd also recommend checking in on your self-recordings to see if there are any specific vowels or consonants that need some improvement. You can get a teacher's help (the Academy offers WhatsApp classes, evaluations and private lessons) if you need help identifying focus topics. Good luck with your studies! Here's my Intonation playlist to get started: kzbin.info/aero/PLrqHrGoMJdTTSRNwRh0VVjO_KXA1La4Dw&si=vIco8nAKUfpA8AdP
