Whenever I think "American jiu-jitsu " I think of a jiu-jitsu practioner with good wrestling and a knack for attacking the legs. It's just a sub genre of jiu-jitsu. It seems like a couple styles that might be considered "American" Jiu Jitsu would be the prevalence of leglocks and no gi from influences like Danaher/Ryan/Eddie Bravo etc. but also maybe some of the heavy wrestling influence that we have in the US in schools growing up. Not to say that you can't find these characteristics in other regions of the world, but I think anywhere you find Jiu Jitsu or Kickboxing or any sort of martial art, you'll likely always find certain regional factors that affect the style. They're more of subcultures of the same art rather than different arts I think

What has American contributed to Jiu-Jitsu that BJJ does not utilize? Can someone kindly list them? Because I tried searching and I got generic things like "wrestling." To be honest, i don't mind American JJ, BUT are the contributions to the art significant enough? I don't think so.

Why should anyone care about nomenclature? It is all submission grappling in the end, and if American athletes/coaches want to emphasize wrestling and physical toughness over the guard-pulling, ass-dragging, points-based ethos preferred in other regions then god bless.

@octanb Yes, but Judo and BJJ have different institutions, training practices, rule-sets and competitions. They are different sports with unique cultures, albeit with a shared history. It would be like saying 'Mexicans and Spaniards are the same' just because they both speak spanish.
@Leitefsj
@Leitefsj 2 жыл бұрын
@octanb That is also not correct. Judo and BJJ have a common ancestor: Jujutsu (traditional japanese Jiu-jitsu). When Maeda came to Brazil, that's what he taught Carlos and Hélio Gracie. So, to stay with the language metaphors, it's more like Jujutsu is Latin, Judo is spanish and BJJ is portuguese. They might look the same, for untrained ears, but their rules, structures and flow are completely different.

Until a distinct set of new techniques are developed in the US, to be a point of difference, it should only be BJJ. I did Japanese JJ for 5 years and recently started BJJ. JJJ is very different and has some cross overs into Aikido. There is some ground work in JJJ, but the aim is to stay on your feet where possible, due to the obvious disadvantage of being on the floor on a battlefield. A Samurai technique was to try to break your little fingers, because you can’t use a sword, grab or punch. As far as I know these techniques are banned in BJJ. My point is there is a big enough difference between BJJ and JJJ to justify a different name.

It feels like if we want an AJJ distinction we would be in a weird spot as IBJJF which requires belt holders to trace lineages to The Gracies. Like on one level we want to be distinct and say “we’re a new thing” but then when we compete we say no bro I’m under Helio just like you!

The comment made at 6:10 is exactly what everyone needs to follow. Petty divisiveness is common, and expected, and pretty much the entire history of every martial art and other human endeavour eventually succumbs to this. We will start to evolve as a species when more than 5% of the human population realizes this and seeks to avoid it happening. Unfortunately short sighted goals will inevitably lead to the same pattern as has happened with previous initiatives. Additionally, chasing money prevents most of us from making good long-term decisions about the care of something we are involved with, in this case jiujitsu, so as the sport gets more money-oriented this will likely obscure the situation further. As soon as you begin to hear the “us versus them“ theme that is the beginning of the inevitable demise of the purity of something. Now is the critical time for the leaders of the jiujitsu world to come together and get rid of this divisiveness. See it for the problem it is, and fix it. Probably won't happen, as is the reason we have umpteen number of associations, leagues, organizations and federations. But let's just call it jiu jitsu and take all the country stuff out. It’s no longer Brazilian. Thank you kindly and greatly to those that did innovate and bring it to the world, but there comes a point of necessary detachment, and we're at that stage now. I think it is important to recognize roots, and to honour them. A couple of Brazilian families started all this (well, one, but you know..then it branched). Rickson's book "Breath" gives a bit of a blurb on why it's no longer called Gracie JJ. The priority here is for humanity to come together and make progress, together. Anything short of that is a failing on the part of whoever decides to be divisive. No exceptions. Failure.

As far as I know, these martial arts originates from china, Japanese travelers brought martial arts to japan. A Japanese named Maeda came to the U.S. en then to brazil, teaching his art to Brazilians, who were immigrants from Scotland. Then it came to the U.S. again and around the world.

Len Lanius wrote "American Jiu Jitsu" in 1922. Carlos (then 17 years old) had just started passing on Maeda's teachings to his brothers at this time. and In 1931, S.J. Jorgensen wrote a book called "American Jiu-Jitsu". In 1937 he wrote "American Police Jiu-Jitsu". and The book "Edward L. Allen's system of American Jiu-Jitsu" was written in 1941 - doing this shit in suits a decade before Hélio fought Kimura. LMFAO

The hypocrocy of bjj people to point out that Americans are taking credit for these old Japanese techniques that some date back nearly a thousand years roughly. When in fact the Brazilians act like they invented any moves at all when they didn't. All they did was practice newaza judo moves more and mainly focus on them when judo focused on nagewaza (stand up grappling ie mainly throws, trips,sweeps, single leg takedowns, double legs, and body takedowns)!! The Brazilians have way to much pride in moves they didn't even create!!

Let's just call it JJJ 3.0. That would fair for the future of the sport : it's constantly evolving and welcomes any new input worldwide so no need to be too self centered or too rebelious. Let's not forget that outside the American continent influence, you have the Russian's inputs : it's because of them that footlocks are here and we got the primary forms of butterfly guard. And the Greco Roman implementation ( which pays tribute to Mediterenean wrestling but was develloped in France by Jean Exbrayat, so not american ) also was part of this composite sport we call BJJ. Look for Chris Haueter's speech at BJJ Globetrotters.
