It's not mentioned but John Harrisons excellence actually really quite faded from British consciousness in the 19th & 20th century when we talk about our great inventors up until the mid 1990s when the "Finale" of British Hit comedy show Only Fools And Horses focused on the main characters finally striking it rich by discovering they actually possessed a mythical 'H6' watch. From then on Harrison slowly started to received alot of accliam and memorials over the following years.

The seaman was hanged because only officers were allowed to have anything to do with navigation, as a deterrent against mutiny. If the crew were to turn against the officers and take over the ship, they would find themselves lost at sea.

20 000£ in the first half of the 18th century is 10 000 000 $ today. Quite a lot of money.

Dava Sobel also wrote Galileo's Daughter (the reality about Galileo) and Longitude was made into a great suspense movie in 2000.

There's a memorial plaque celebrating Admiral Sir Cloudesly Shovell on the wall of our local church on the south east edge of London.

Dava Sobel's book "Longitude" is a brilliant read and was made into a dvd of the same name. I've watched it a few times as Harrison is one of my heroes. A modest, dogged and brilliant man who was treated appallingly by the Longitude Board and the Royal Society. Such vision he had for a poor working man.

I read that book about ten years ago. It's fascinating. I highly recommend it.

Would that be just after the BBC did a drama programme about the subject because that's when I got the book as well? Of course, it could have been a BBC4 repeat that I watched!

This is stretching it a bit... We have the Antikythera clock so we know how they traveled in the olden days. Yes we have only found 1 of them but that doesn't mean there was only 1... I have a full collection of Tazo's. And I mean it's full... Everyone ever made I have. Does that mean I'm the only one? No just like the Antikythera clock... There was probably a lot of these machines. But we've only found one of them.

I only wish our teachers actually taught us things that interested us, a beautifully wide and varied diet of amazing facts ... No - instead they intentionally bored the living daylights out of us by making us go over the same tedious novel or whatever for two (precious) years until we WRONGLY figured we hated history, literature, mathematics, science - The teachers at our school (or whoever they were answerable to) gave a good impression of being time wasting fools, squandering our insatiable curiosity so they could virtually torture us - to what ends, I will never know. I'd like to meet some of them face to face again after all these years. I think we were just being babysat, prepped to operate a lathe or drilling machine at best - and generally, to load vans. One lad ended up in tears when he told the (maths) teacher he wanted to be a policeman - he was ripped to shreds for being over-ambitious in light of his (apparently inadequate) mathematics skills. I don't know what happened to Robert Shaftsbury, but by coincidence, his main friend, David Bagnall, ended up some high up Police Officer! I HOPE he found something to arrest Mr Jones, cr... p maths teacher of the year, for. When people ask what happened to "youth of today" I have long suspected that the trickle down effect of so many utterly useless and vindictive people going into the teaching profession - If parents had a terrible experience because of utterly useless and vindictive gits like Mr Jones, why should they encourage their own kids to have respect for teachers? I am sure today's teachers are better. I hope.

@@stephenbrough8132 Teachers are just another group of various people I had bad teachers and inspiring teachers. I studied History in England O level to 16 years old and A level to 18 though have found more here on this site and with SoGal ( really worth watching ) to see how someone else sees the world. Schools & teachers are what they are though as we grow as adults it up to us to learn more and leave those bad teachers behind even to leave behind our own bias we have been taught to understand the world and different views as we learn more of facts of history to understand the past to understand more of where we are now with people as yourself from differing societies even just UK & America Is great You wish to learn more as I do That is what is important NOT the bad teachers we have left behind

@@stephenbrough8132 Teachers are just people as you & me. I studied History in England at O level to 16 years old and A level to 18 Some teachers as when I was 10 were shit, some just taught what they needed some were inspiring . Now as am older is up to us to learn more from differing views & leave bad teachers behind. I feel with you and enjoy this here as well as SoGal on KZbin ( worth to look up ) as an American she is great to follow and learn more as I have. I feel we need to learn more especially from people as your self and others from different backgrounds is so important. As we are older is up to us to learn more of history and leave the bad teachers behind : )
