This is actually an in at the deep end clip really, this is Vic and Bob at their most surreal, Vic has always been a painter too and this influenced his early comedy, he took inspiration from the Dada art movement who rejected capitalist society in favour for irrationality and nonsense, when Vic and Bob first hit UK tv screens with their show 'Vic Reeves Big Night Out' it was an instant cult classic, loved and misunderstood in equal measure as it was just too far out for many viewers, but their long running quiz which they went on to make called 'Shooting Stars' is a lot more accessible, and along with many appearances on comedy panel shows more and more people have been able to appreciate the comedy of Vic and Bob, especially Bob in recent years with his appearances on shows like WILTY. I'm a painter myself so am well aware of Dada and the European avant-garde so fell in love with what Vic and Bob do instantly, but I've had very good friends who took a little while to be won around by it, but who love it now too.

I mean, it is surreal, but imagine watching the clip without really ever having seen an episode of 1980s/90s Masterchef nor knowing anything about Lloyd Grossman. The references are pretty obscure even for a Brit born after 1995, let alone an American

For context, the thing with the giant head is supposed to be a parody of a guy called Loyd Grossman. Well known author/food critic in the UK back in the 90's. The accent and the head are really well done 😂
@matthewwalker54302 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the sketch is so much funnier when you understand that they're using surrealism to parody a real person and show with surprising accuracy. Not only is Grossman a slightly surreal character in real life (he does sound like he's speaking in slow motion sometimes, lol) but early/mid 90's Masterchef did cook up some strange creations from time to time. Reeves and Mortimer took that slight weirdness of reality and cranked it up to 11. So funny

Of course they didn’t invent surrealism. Neither did Python. Neither the Goons. People were not surreal until Freud made a slip. What was unique about Vic and Bob was on the surface they were the most unlikely practicers of it. Giving it a Northern comedic twist that gave the whole act a surreal backdrop. As for the reference to cultural landscape, well I was around at that time and shows like the Big Breakfast were a huge part of young peoples lives and music still ruled and I remember distinctly that every want to be person on TV was trying desperately to out Vic and Bob each other. Their brand of humour was infectious and it went beyond what most comedy achieves. I stand by that statement.

The big head was a take on Loyd Grossman who was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on 16 September 1950 and raised in Marblehead, Massachusetts. he would have pronounced Master chef as Maarsterchef. He graduated from Boston University with a B.A. in history before travelling to the United Kingdom in 1975 to study at the London School of Economics, where he received a master's degree in economic history. He later returned to university at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he studied history of art, and received his MPhil and a PhD. He presented Masterchef from 1990 to 2000 and Junior Masterchef. Wikipedia. Vic Reeves, real name Jim Moir appeared as a guest on BBC One's The One Show with Mortimer. Series 6 of Shooting Stars began airing on 26 August 2009 with Reeves and Mortimer, along with Ulrika Jonsson and Jack Dee as team captains. Jack Dee is another to check out in the fullness of time.
