Something interesting. Peter brock lived in Nutfield, north of Melbourne (I live in Hurstbridge which is right next to Nutfiled and hosts an old garage which Brock's parents owned and also has a park named after him, Brock Park). Not far from here (4.5ks) is Diamond Creek which is where Craig Lowdnes grew up and went to school (Diamond Creek Tech, now called Diamond Valley College) and then a little further down the road is Greensborough which is where Jamie Whincup grew up (I grew up about 6 doors up and he was one of my childhood friends). So within about 3 suburbs of Melbourne we had Brock, Lowdnes and Whincup, with 23 Bathurst wins and 13 Australian touring Car Championships between them. Pretty extraodinary!

The A9X didn't have the bathurst high speed differential on it so it was topping out so brocky had to hold back so it didn't redline and blow the engine. Because it's last race was some like eastern Creek.
@jasonnielsen21253 жыл бұрын
It did have the high speed rear end in it. It was, in fact, the highest speed ratio Holden had for the time, 2.6:1 ratio. They chose this ratio to have a higher speed down Conrod Straight. This would also would allow the driver to hold 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear longer for climbing the Mountain. The lower the number, the greater the top speed in high gear, known as a Tall ratio. The taller ( higher ) the speed. This is why drag cars have rear ratios in the range of of 4:1 to 6:1 as they only have to race a short distance. Cheers bud.
@BobarissGish3 жыл бұрын

@@jasonnielsen2125 with a 2.6 diff the thing wouldnt be able to climb mountain straight . a 2.6 diff is that tall the motor wouldnt be able to pull peak revs anyway . they revved them to 7200 , if it could pull peak revs with a 2.6 diff it would be doing about 190 MPH , which of course with 400 odd HP it couldnt
@jasonnielsen21253 жыл бұрын
It had it bud, trust me. It was specifically homologated for Bathurst, they used it and it pulled top revs. If in 2004, they used the 3:55, that would have made sense as it would have run out of legs down conrod, thus not catching the SS Comm. I can assure you that in 1979, it had the 2:6 in it. You have to keep in mind that the SS Comm is 5.7L with only around 315HP, the A9X has around 420HP. So like I said, if the A9X had better gearing by using the T56 6 speed, the result would have been different.

@@jasonnielsen2125sorry mate you are 100% wrong. They don’t run the 2.6 diff in 1979. All teams went to Bathurst in 1977 with the 2.6 diffs and found them too tall . I am lovin' takin' a fresh look at Aus through your eyes, and am in awe of just how quickly you pick up on some of the best aspects of the unique things we've got goin' on 'ere! Peter Brock (Brockie) what a legend! Not only was he undeniably dubbed "King of the Mountain" (meaning Mt. Panorama) he was also called "Peter Perfect", at least in the car he never seemed to put a foot wrong. My brother and I were fascinated when Peter started racing in his little four cylinder car, he'd give them V8's a run for their money, battling it out with them up through the top of the mountain, or through the corners, Brockie had it all over them, that is until they hit the straights, then it was bye-bye Pete, as they made a mockery of his best efforts. But little bro and me were like, "Mate! If Brockie ever gets behind the wheel of a V8 he's gonna show them what matters!", and didn't he prove us right. We would religiously watch every Touring Car race Peter went into, we loved what he could do with his little fours, then sixes, and finally he got his V8. There's more to Brockie's legacy though, here in Aus, the blood alcohol percentage level is 0.05, the biggest driving force behind that being the case? Yep, Peter Brock. Pete was all about being sensible on the road, and he campaigned for years with the .05 number all over his racers, increasing our Aussie awarenesses of the bad combo of drinking and driving. I actually got to meet Peter Brock, I was no longer a beardless boy by then, but when I was in the presence of this legendary driver I felt like I was ten all over again. He shook my hand and showed me his A9X, he and his old racer were in a pavilion/marquee in Adelaide (when the Grand-Prix were still being held there), and he was down to earth and was as excited as I was while he showed me his car and explained it's features. I couldn't believe it, there was the Brock-mobile I'd only ever seen on telly eating up the track, and one of, if not, our greatest racing drivers taking out time for a mere mortal, Loved It! Got on the dog-n-bone and told me brother all about it, and that I mentioned his name to Brockie as well. Some of our faves were Alan Grice, Dicky Johnson, Murray Carter, Peter Janson, the big Cannuck Alan Moffat, so many more, all legends and great blokes into the bargain!

Not to take anything away from the old guard - they're legends for a reason, after all - but I don't think that the current and recent past slew of drivers don't have what it takes to be that loved. They simply haven't had the time to get that prestige. The last few years, it's been much more about driver skill since everyone's on the same hardware, and some of the margins between them have been awfully close. The guys out on track know how to drive, and know how to drive pretty damn well. I mean, you haven't looked at a lot of Skaife, much Murphy, any Bowe, Lowndes, Whincup, McLaughlin, Winterbottom, Mostert, van Gisbergen...there are a lot of names that you haven't been nudged towards, and some legends in the making in that list. I'd say check Bowe, Murph, and Skaife first from that list first, but Lowndes is probably the most universally loved of the lot.

Alan Grice was the most loyal Holden driver. He was a competitive racer too. When I was growing up I was a Holden person, 'cause of Peter Brock. Luckily for me my mum had a 1969 Holden Monaro. Now I don't go for Holden over Ford, but I still follow motorsport. Anyway I got to respect Grice for his loyalty in the 1990s, also his moustache in the '70's.

look up some of craig lowndes drives, he won Bathurst 7 times one win he started last on the grid, he was not only an amazing driver but also the nicest bloke you would see, he learnt so much from brock and was also given brocks 05 number in a Bathurst race to honour brocky

5L Torana vs 5.7L Commodore vs 5L Super car. Results in my mind in that order. A9X legend. I still feel the pain 40 years on.

To be fair the other 2 divers were current drivers at the time and Brock was just out having fun, if it were to be possible to have all drivers at there peak then it may have been a different outcome?

No. Lmfao. 4 speed Torana is never going to outrun a modern v8 Supercar. However if Peter was in a V8 Suoercar vs Skaife it would be a good match

I got a white 2003 VY SS series 1 5.7 with a T56 manual with all options (leather interior, sunroof etc) It's bone stock but won't be for long, already got a twin 2.5 xforce exhaust and pacemaker extractors to install Having that said I'd get a old HQ GTS 350 Monaro

Hell yeah, I'd take the classic Torana over the other 2 any day of the week. All 3 are great cars though. Supercars may have become faster over the years, but it was early 2000's era and earlier where they looked the most like road cars.

G'day. Peter Brock was last to cross the finish line in one of the Bathurst races. His car had to have repairs during the race. He got back in and continued racing knowing that he would be last rather than get a DNF.

Throw the same horsepower into the Torana and a different story. Their small, light and handle well.

I had an LC Torana 2 door, 173 I think for my first car in 1986 and my dad owned a 4 door dark metallic green A9X and a yellow LX SLR5000 both bought new in 1977. What I would give to have my old LC back in my garage.

I actually spoke to Brocky about 2 months after that event and he said to me it was an unprepared race car and had the wrong diff ratio in it and would have gone faster than it did. He was a little disappointed but extremely happy to be back in driving as it needed to be.

Thanks for doing this one Ian it's always been a favorite of mine. You should check out the 2 part TV movie about Brock. A little bit embellished like all movies, but lots of cool driving scenes and it will really teach you about how Brock came to be, and Aussie culture during the 70s and 80s. I'm pretty sure a reaction video would do really well for you. Part 1- kzbin.info/www/bejne/enLKpZh3ebernNk Part 2 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mma2hXaClrSsrtE

I can say the time of big Ford Falcon Coupes, Holden Toranas, Chrysler Chargers, Valiants, Mustangs, Camaros etc was by far the best to watch. While not as fast as today’s category they were far more entertaining and more realistic to typical showroom cars. Today’s drivers are polished, managed and media savvy, almost like the Supercars themselves 😜 so good luck to anyone in love with the current series as unfortunately there will never be an era like before.

A SLR5000 Torana is also a winner, and I would say yes to. The replacement, the Sunbird, was a total wheezer.

Hi Ian to me the Toranas ( or trolleys as they were nicknamed ) are the nostalgia specials and I think a lot of the older drivers had more showmanship about them. Still, I love motorsport and it doesn't matter which era it comes from.

if you take the staggered start into account the Torana came second and the Super Car kicked arse. Please do Holden Monaro

You should check out the video of Dick Johnson driving Peter Brocks Torana. Dick was always a Ford person, he drove the bright green old XE Ford you have seen a couple times, and got to do a few laps with his old nemesis’s car. The whole while he talks to the camera as he drives the car for the first time and gets to experience it. He tells the tale of the freindly competition between them. In ‘83 Dick smashed his bright green car on the mountain into the trees one race (I think you have seen those photos in another video) and Peter stopped to pick him up and drive him back to the pits mid race.

Torana. Always loved them. I remember when Torana's were everywhere. Should have bought ten or fifteen of them and stuck them in a shed somewhere. Lol.
