Always loved Bottom. Has been classed as a "If Tom & Jerry were human" sort of vibe with the slapstick violence. Yes, it solely focuses an these two and the various chaos that goes on in their lives. Highly recommend watching full episodes

Its amazing that British tv shows got so popular that they got to do live theatre shows or even tour. Although mostly variety sketch shows such as Little Britain, Fast show, League of Gentleman - Bottom had the feel of a theatre play already.

Ade Edmonson and Rik Mayall were in The Young One's which was aired in the 80's. It was an anarchic comedy about 4 students in a bedsit. Whilst the characters in Bottom aren't the same characters there was a lot of carry over in the style and humour. In the Young One's Ade played a punk called Vyvyan. Rik was, well Rick whereas in Bottom Ade is (ahem) Eddie Hitler and Rik is Richard Richard. They've done some live Bottom stuff and it's fantastic.

Rik and Ade started off doing 'The Dangerous Brothers' skits on stage in the late 1970's. Regulars in The Comedy Club they eventually made it onto tv. Their characters in The Young Ones and Bottom were an evolution of this. Most of what you see of them throughout the decades has major dna from 'Sir Richard and Sir Adrian Dangerous'

I grew up on this stuff. It was and probably still is very much British humor at its finest. However, I may be wrong, but I think a lot of Americans would not "get" this type of humor and may find it odd. I'm from NZ, and have always loved this show. The "Young Ones" is very similar, and a brilliant series also.

I actually had a weird Eddiesque adventure involving beer, me dressed as Eddie, a lady dressed as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, being stopped by the police who thought my cricket bat was real (I had a SFX foam rubber one like they used on 'Bottom'), and several missing hours (in the company of Dorothy). And apparently my return was somewhat like this scene.

Bottom was devised by the late great Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson in the early 90's as a follow up sitcom of sorts to The Young Ones series from the 80's, which they also wrote and performed in, but The Young Ones (named after the Cliff Richard song) was more of an ensemble, experimental, New Wave Comedy sitcom with bands of the day performing in between "scenes" and skits. It was a popular show in the 80's and helped start the careers of many comedy talents, such as Alexei Sayle, Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer and even Ben Elton, who made a brief appearance. It's called Bottom because the characters have literally hit rock bottom in society, it was originally meant to be about two lazy, layabout unemployed people who get up to all sorts of crazy exploits just to pass the time. It kind of developed beyond that and they never specifically state that the characters are unemployed, it's more about what they do and how they get out of the predicament they are in, plus it has lots of slapstick. Bottom became so popular that it spawned 5 live show tours of the UK (most of which are on KZbin) and a movie called Guest House Paradiso.

Bottom is a British television sitcom created by Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall that originally aired on BBC2 from 17 September 1991 to 10 April 1995 across three series. The show stars Edmondson and Mayall as Edward Elizabeth "Eddie" Hitler and Richard "Richie" Richard, two crude, perverted flatmates with no jobs and little money who live in Hammersmith, West London. The show features chaotic, nihilistic humour and violent comedy slapstick.

My recommendation would be to watch the whole series. Just one series in a long comedy career shared by this amazing duo.

Most popular episode is "Gas" Personal favourite is "Hole" Most people don't grasp the long standing inspiration from Waiting For Godot that permeates the series. 😊 But even without that it is some of the best slapstick comedy you'll see.

The bottom live shows are fantastic because the "bloopers" are not cut

Rik Mayall's death hit me as much as sean locks did. Plus he's from my town! Rik did Lord Flash in blackadder 2 and 4 as well. His characters were always anarchic, always brash.

In some ways two miserable males living in a dirty flat is kind of similar to two miserable males living in a scrapyard (Steptoe & Son) Both were mainly set in one location, and both had the feeling of a theatre play with bittersweet monologues and abrasive relationships.

If you have not watched more I suggest you do, 3 Seasons worth as well as a "Fluff" episode for each season which is basically outtakes and is just REALLY funny and then there are live performances which are also fantastic, have been going to bed listening to this for years.

I've been waiting for ages to get into the absolutely incredible, unimaginable and unrivalled chaos that is Bottom and the writing of Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson. Definitely recommend you check out the Bottom Live bloopers reel - search for "Eddie and Richie lose the plot". They're an amazing double-act, one of the best that Britain has ever produced.

If you want to see where some of the comedy came from, watch an episode (or three) of 'The Young Ones'. That starred both of these guys plus Nigel Planer, Christopher Ryan and Alexi Sayle, with appearances from Ben Elton, who wrote a fair bit of it. The anarchic humour is all there, and continued in Bottom with the main focus on the two characters you see in the video, and their misadventures.
