@@olgahein4384 Interesting, I've read - on this video but also another ''reaction'' video as well - that she lives and works in Switzerland but if she is genuinely trying to sell ''high end'' clothing (in which case she is a rotten advertisement) the UK would probably be a more suitable place to begin in. She isn't a great advert though and the sheer ignorance she displays - there are over 50 countries in Europe and we all have different standards of dress yet she is claiming basically that Europe is a country (actually, maybe she's really from the US, they are the one place that seems to regularly claim Europe and Africa are countries rather than continents) with the same dress codes everywhere - which isn't exactly a great advert for her video either if you think about it.. She is also incredibly inaccurate and obviously doesn't keep up with fashion, most of what she is loudly declaiming as inappropriate dress is allegedly the incoming fashions for 2024 and that includes the ''sneakers'' she is saying you shouldn't wear.

Needless to say Anna knows nothing about fashion, fit or even etiquette. She takes all the sterotypical advice from 50s housewives magazine, modernized it a bit and selling it off as what she thinks rich European reality is (given the few trips she took with her sugar daddy). She is and only talking about women. Men don't seem to get a look in. In beach resorts around the Med it is a t shirt, shorts and sandals - without socks. Chino shorts for general wear and beach shorts for lounging round the pool or on the beach. Its the norm for the area and you blend in with the locals. May use trainers instead of sandals especially if further north but much depends on the local climate and weather.

It's more a tutorial on how to look good / upper class in europe. Most europeans wear casual / comfy clothes as well but it's very common to also see people that just look good. Nothing crazy but you can see the little extra efforts. There are cultural differences between europe and US on fashion as explained we prefer classic and elegant but looking expensive is not. We don't like flashy we prefer subtle. For example Ryan would look better in europe with a small logo on his sweath shirt or even better no logo at all. In europe this outfit would look OK, not classy or good because it's sporty. It's an everyday outfit and no one would pay special attention to it good or bad. However most exemples shown are exagerated and it's rare to see people dressed this good. Also dressing decent in church is pretty accurate especially in Italy, they are more traditional there.

@@karakiri283 Yeah, german tourists are letting themselves completely go when on vacation. The vast majority would never do the things they do, dress or behave the way they do when vacationing in other countries. I remember that from my childhood from my family and their friends. Every year in Spain we would walk from the hotel to the beach, about 10-15 minutes, and everyone would go in their swimmwear. Even at the age of 10 i felt so uncomfortable and it got worse when my mom bought me and my sister 'swimming trunks' for girls - just some very small panties with no top. I refused to leave the hotel room till they let me wear a t-shirt after i asked my mom if she would find it ok if i went to school back at home in that outfit. A year later i insisted on shorts to the shirt (cause i've grown and my butt was hanging out) or a dress. My parents were so annoyed when they went and bought me 3 dresses to wear for the whole vacation.

I'm a European and if you were my boyfriend I would give you some little suggestions. No gray shirts with khakis, the colour combo is wrong. Maybe a black or dark bleu, even a white shirt is much better. No shirts without any form to it. Make it a shirt with something, buttons or zipper or a polo. And no big logos! Recognise the difference between trainers and sneakers. The second is more dressy, but can be just as comfortable. But even trainers can look much more a normal day shoe, when they are in one colour, black, white, tan, dark blue.

Hi, Brit here. I'm sure this is appropriate for some people, but I have not met them. I think the bit about dressing appropriately for a church is good advice, many of the tourist destinations are churches or similar. Most churches want a general absence of bare skin, no bare midriff, no bare arms, no shorts (bare legs), no cutaway back. Bare feet is normally wrong too. And ladies heads to be covered (not always) but if you don't know its a good option. I think you need to consider the weather/outdoor temperature, few places you visit will have Air Con.

This is funny because The Graham Norton Show used to sometimes have a segment called "European or Gay?" where various members of the audience would be asked to stand up as the celebrity guests try to work out whether they are European or gay, based on their fashion and look. She is definitely a classy and elegant lady, very very feminine but she sounds a bit snobbish. Here in Italy we tend to dress more formally in working environment but in our free time we do use more casual clothing and girls definitely wear leggings, sneakers and backpacks. I live in Milan, one of the major Italian cities, I'm in my sixties and I don't even own a skirt or a dress. When traveling I always take with me comfortable sneakers that are not flashy in colors and that can be worn with more traditional trousers without clashing too much and most of my female friends do the same. The bit about us preferring more natural colors is generally true and yes, we walk A LOT, so be prepared to do the same if you visit also because most of the touristic, historical parts of our cities are closed to traffic. If you like sneakers, please use them and save your feet the pain and discomfort of classic, less padded shoes especially if you're not used to walking that much. This said, we don't look down on tourist for wearing sportswear or very bright colors but what we tend to see as rude and disrespectful are crop tops and hot pants (or short pants for men) in public seating areas like restaurants where your completely human and understandable sweat can be transfered and then enjoyed (well, not so much) by the next customer. The bit about covering your shoulders in Italian churches is often true, especially in the more important, touristic cathedrals while sleeveless clothes are tolerated even during functions in "normal" churches in the hot months.

Inside: pants and shoes stay the same, I wore a black t-shirt with about 50 little pink flamingos printed on it. jewelry, 4 large silver rings, 2 on each hand, a simple silver necklace and if that also works with jewelry, I had painted all 5 fingernails black on my left hand. this is my eropean style. not normal either.

Okay, let's talk men's wear: Yes, young European men do wear trainers, sweatpants, jeans, t-shirts, even cargo trousers or cargo shorts all the time, just as their US-American counterparts. But there is imho a noticable difference: Americans (at least the ones, that can immediatly be identified as such) tend to wear oversized things (note: not necessarily oversized styles), even the average American business suit is somewhat baggier than European, especially Italian or French ones. Oversized, big sneakers, big logos or prints, a tendency towards 'loud' colours. The majority of young European males wear more or less understated stuff with a slimmer silhouhette. And that makes them appear a bit more stylish even if on the surface they wear similar clothes as Americans.

while i do think that athleisure is less common in europe than NA it's still pretty normal, i'd say it's just seen as more of an "i'm having a lazy day" kinda style. wearing shorts and crop tops too is perfectly normal at least in germany even at school, i guess it's just this person who grew up conservative. i have also been in churches in shorts etc so this might be an italian thing idk it's still true that you can easily spot american tourists by their clothes and blending in helps a great deal with things like pickpockets and how the public might treat you but i wouldn't listen to this video per se

I’m not convinced that worrying about other people’s clothes is something that we should take up personally 🤷

I have to agree with Anna here. Sporty stuff is an epidemic. There are dozens of different types of clothes that are comfortable, and you don't look like a victim of gym evacuation. Smart casual style is a pretty good compromise. Some tips for men: Take a liking to button down shirts. There are many types, including the less formal and made of comfortable fabrics: oxford cotton (spring, autumn), linen (summer), plain flannel (winter). If you reach for t-shirts then choose minimalist ones - without prints. Don't be afraid of single and double-breasted blazers. They, too, can be comfortable - especially those in Italian, less rigid cuts. Make sure they are made of wool, cotton or linen. In winter, you can reach for flannel, tweed, corduroy or cashmere. Choose calm colors, and when you want to stand out, choose something with a pattern: checks, stripes, herringbones, micro patterns. In winter: turtleneck sweaters, cardigans. Trousers: chino pants (cotton, corduroy, linen) or plain jeans (not necessarily selvedge denim, but decent quality). Shoes: oxford, derby, brougue, monk, loafers. Sneakers are ok, but flat sole, single color and minimalist, preferably leather. In winter - derby, brougue, chelsea or chukka boots. Leather hiking shoes (like Timberland 6). In summer: driving mocs, boat shoes, espadrilles. Overcoats: chersterfield, polo coat, british warm, covert coat, trench coat, duffle coat, pea coat. Jackets: husky, wax jacket, field jacket (M-65), parka, harrington jacket, quilted down jacket. Pay attention to accessories: belt, watch, pocket square, cufflinks. Some, despite their apparent formality, are quite casual: eg. silk knot cufflinks, knit tie.

I see a lot of comments against this lady from many Europeans. The thing is, as an Italian myself, I fully understand her hahaha and that’s because not only American tourists tend to dress badly (and they stand out A LOT) but other European countries have terrible sense of fashion too 😅😅 and yes, here in italy, where we take fashion very seriously (some may argue maybe too much) you will get stared in public if your outfit doesn’t fit the occasion.

Same in most of Spain, you can find the northern europeans by the lobster red skin, cargo shorts and the socks with sandals.

Ryan you have to understand that in Europe there way ahead of North America in Fashion then us. In the US girls don't wear dresses anymore. Go to Europe you will see girls and women in dresses all the time.

when she mentioned dress codes, all I remembered was how in the 1910s and 20s there were "beach police" that would go around and make sure women were sufficiently covered up and not showing off too much

What total bunk... what this lady is describing is like, the fashion of the soccer-wives and that kind of strata of society, the prosecco drinking class. But leave the khaki at home, that will scream 'US tourist'. Just wear jeans. If a bit faded, all the better. What makes you stand out as a tourist is gawking at stuff, and that's what you're there for, so just go for it and have fun.

I've tried to read as many comments as I was able to but haven't found the most realistic scenario so far. As a tourist in Europe you'll mostly visit places with a certain historical or cultural background and meaning (not only when it comes to churches) and the nicest places are most of the times places where the money and the elegance is. You will feel misplaced in Haarlem, Netherlands, when go out there for a drink and you're the only person dressed as a child or a rapper or a member of the fitness club. When you're surrounded by medieval art and architecture, the selfies you'll take with a t-shirt and a baseball cap will look like 'dirt cheap' (I found that word in a dictionary app). Btw, the lady stands for Eastern European fashion standards only. Towards the west they are less artificially overstyled and less heavily made-up, the thing with the lips extremely rare.

Ryan if you swaped your t-shirt for a Polo shirt with the same trousers you have on that would give you a smarter European look or a linen shirt for summer would also work. It's not difficult it just doesn't have big writing across your chest or the name of whichever college you went to (incase you forgot).

Exactly. Yes, Europeans do dress casually as well, no doubt. But not to that extent like in the USA. You still will see a lot of men here wearing polos or rather good shirts (buttoned) in the streets, very often combined with jeans or chinos. Only the very young ones dress always in sweatpants, t-shirts or hoodies in Europe as well. And the amount of athletic wear (aside from a gym or sports event) you see or the frequency of it being worn is way less in Europe, too.
