What’s 80% English Speakers got to do with it. So are Americans. It’s just that America fought for independence and won it. Canada didn’t, so they are still part of the Commonwealth. What I’m just shocked he didn’t know. But how shocked was he when he realised other countries that were still also.

@@softshallow7435 There are a lot of people that would dispute the fact that America won there independence or whether the British gave it to them. Britain had won most battles in the war and then America sued for peace, it was costly and used a lot of man power to fight a war on the other side of the Atlantic, at the time it could take 3weeks or more to get a ship across so supply lines were an issue and the fact that America was only a fraction of the size it is now, Britain were fighting other wars that were considered more important to the British empire at the time for example in India which was the jewel in the crown at the time. Either way if it was won or given I for one am glad of the fact because now America is Britain's best and strongest ally.

@@justme1111 the American war of independence was won by the French and Spanish doing the fighting, with the then rebellious English colony claiming victory, the English were fighting a war on two fronts, one in Europe against the French and Spanish and the war in America against the same enemy.
@justme1111
@justme1111 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewtadd4373 the French just jumped on the band wagon as they always do when they see an opportunity to go to war with the British in actual fact taxation on the 13 colonies and the lack of representation in the houses of parliament back in London helped massively in instigating the initial conflict the French and Spanish had a lot of territory in modern day north America and of course lets not forget the indigenous people the native Americans who in general fought with the British whilst the French supplied the 13 colonies that were in the British views in rebellion against the crown. America (13 colonies) received men and arms from the French and Spanish but mainly financial support without which a rebellion is as it would have remained up until this point actual independence wasn't even thought of but once the support was available it became a real possibility and there for the actual aims changed. Originally lower tax's and representation in the house of commons was all the 13 colonies wanted this changed as the war went on and the French and Spanish gave their support to the 13 colonies. The native Americans suffered severely for their support of the British in the mass expansion of the U.S.A. that was to follow later.

Belgium was created by the British to prevent France having access to the harbours in Northern Europe, and in particular Antwerp. Now , us Brits have trouble keeping french fishing boats out of our waters. We seem to be America’s lap dog and the might we once had is sadly gone. We were the greatest country on earth (even though we did do some terrible things on the way) , we gave the world the industrial Revolution, medicine, science, democracy, Magna Carta & the English language . And yes I know the horrors that we did too before anyone comments. But nothing ever great came from stroking puppies and waiting for it to be handed to you. Don’t apologise too strongly for bad things done by the British Empire. The East India Company where ruthless no doubt, but not more than some of the Indian Pashas and what not who treated their own subjects way worse than the British. Such rulers most often employed French and Prussian officers to train their armies. The fact that Britain still prevailed is not worthy of criticism. It’s as much envy as anything else, that Britain is reviled, and now the left of politics is into cancel culture results in mindless untruthful opposition. It also makes better movies to display Britain’s evils. I spent a month in Kinshasa, Republic of Congo. Talking with the locals, I was surprised that they all wished they had been colonised by Britain rather than France or Belgium. The prevailing opinion was that at least the Brits trained the locals in Govt’ administration. Citing Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria as all being better run than themselves.

Oh, do not forget that Britain single handedly abolished then smashed the African Slave Trade. True, took them a while to abolish Slavery throughout the Empire but once they did they set about dismantling it world wide. Fun fact, Slavery was abolished in the 11th Century, by William the Conqueror. From then on it was illegal to own a slave in Britain. Perfectly fine outside Britain of course (hence the suger islands), but any slave who set foot on British shores was considered a free man from that point, and it was upheld in Court, often pro bono by the lawyers!

The UK probably had the most advanced/ largest navy in the world for most of the 1800s through to about WW2. The peak of this was in 1906 when they launched the HMS Dreadnought, which was essentially the first "modern" battleship (full metal, mounted artillery, etc.). At the time, which I think was 1906, the only guns capable of piercing the Dreadnought's armor were it's own, which practically made the UK undefeatable in a naval conflict. It was so influential on the design of ships dreadnought became the classification for that kind of ship.

England had half of France in 12th century, because the Kings of England were... French. This was their Familial and Ducal lands in France, and England was the conquered territory since 1066 to 1485 by the French Speaking world, not the reverse. On their passports, it is literally written "Dieu et mon Droit" and "Honni soit qui mal y pense". And the rest of the "invasions" don't means they were massively successful. Most were very often repelled, while France faced other more dangerous continental adversaries immediately on their borders.

3:00 Ireland ("Republic of Ireland") is today completely its own sovereign country. Northern Ireland is still part of the UK and a constituent country. Also he forgot Sicily. There's still some red postboxes from that time around. And we also helped Greece become independent in the early 19th century, forget what operations we did there. And apparently he completely forgot the Crimean war which was basically another world war for Britain. We also controlled Malta for quite a long time.

I agree, the Union of the Crowns of England and Scotland was in 1707, from 1707 to 1926 onwards it was The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, after Eire became an independent country in 1926 it became The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

@Alex Smith well as a Scottish person I’d say you need to study your history in greater depth. I doubt your actually Scottish or you’d know firstly about the reformation and the persecution of the Christian Celts. The battle of flodden where out king was murdered and then the establishment of the English aristocracy and the crushing of the jacobites and subsequent subjugation of our people resulting in the highland clearances and the Ayrshire lord of stair title being brought into commission. We never invaded anywhere except England then as a subject of Britain as a satrapy state so to say we invaded anywhere is wildly incorrect and historically inaccurate which makes me think your definitely not Scottish or like me you’d have learned this shot at school. I’m calling you out as an English guy mate but good try lol. Also the Irish lol who have either the Irish or the Welsh ever invaded ?? Another sign you have zero regard for history

@@bornagainwierdo THANK YOU, I'm Scottish and this shit annoyed me so much. We did not want the union, we did not invade anyone as "Brits" because we wanted to. If anything the Scots, Irish and Welsh were the foot soldier's sent in first. Our rich unionist Lords might not be innocent, they fucked up their own people just as much as everywhere else but the Scottish, Welsh and Irish people are not "just as guilty because it's Britain" we weren't given a choice.

As to the celebration of states and their independence, 54 of them choose to belong to the political Union of The British Commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth at its head. The countries together comprise 20 % of the land area of the world and a current population of 2,418,986,000. Democracy and the rule of law given to them stand them apart from many countries. there are some missing parts of the world in the presentation, the Falkland Islands and Malta being two important ones.

Re: Mexico and the American Civil don’t think there were any serious plans to retake the US after the Treaty of Paris, it wasn’t even a war aim of the War of 1812, the British weren’t trying to take it back then. The rest of the the United States you pointed out was Native territory, the British had treaties with them and didn’t want the colonists moving into that territory - not necessarily entirely out of altruism but because the colonists often did move into the territory, got their settlements attacked and asked for assistance from the government, which is where most of the American taxes went, frontier defence. The desire to expand beyond the Appalachians is one of the reasons for the Declaration of Independence.

We honestly couldn't have done any of this without our Navy, which was only really dominant on the world stage from 1805 to the start of WWI. Before that we were struggling to wrest control of trade from Spain and Portugal who had the upper hand at being closer to the New World, something which they most definitely did not want to give to us. We had to fight very hard, almost using piratical tactics, to become successful over there, but when we eventually were successful, by God did it make us rich. Those riches built the Navy that won one of the most famous and arguably most important naval battles in history: the Battle of Trafalgar. From that victory we were completely dominant over our arch-rivals France and Spain for the first time in history. It allowed us to quite literally rule the waves. We had the beginnings of an empire in the 18th century, but the 19th century is the absolute pinnacle of the British Empire. Contrary to popular belief, we didn't actually 'invade' or even really occupy many countries during this time. What we wanted more than anything was free trade, which was what made Britain the industrial powerhouse of the era. What we did was force a lot of countries to trade with us, using our Navy as leverage to make them comply. We sent gunboats down the Chinese rivers, practically right into the heart of their country, to force them to agree to trade with us. We forced Japan out of self-isolation to trade with us. No boots on the ground needed. Everything was about trade. We effectively became the police force of the world, for better and for worse. The only bad thing you could say about it is that the deals we made were always massively in our favour, not that of the people we were trading with. Britain became rich off other nation's backs. However, one thing Britain can be proud of is that we were the leading force in ending the slave trade. We patrolled the seas, always at great expense, to make sure that every slaver we found was arrested and their 'cargo' freed. It's not a well known thing, actually. I think a lot of people assume that Britain was simply complicit in the slave trade or ignored it completely, but we actually did a lot to try and stop it. We weren't always successful, but we really tried. As a Brit, that's something I think I can be proud of considering so much of what we did to become a powerful nation was not good at all.
