We have over 7 000 metal bands in our country. Second are Sweden, third is Norway. We have many super fun competitions such as the Swamp Football World Championship, the Air Guitar World Championship, the Boot Throwing Championship and just about any other competition imaginable. In summer, many festivals are organized around Finland. In the central part, the nightless night is celebrated (at these latitudes, the sun does not set behind the horizon at all. ) and in the fall on the west coast, the Venetians are organized. In Venice, the end of the cottage season is celebrated and then the cottage beaches are full of lanterns and in many cities there are either fireworks or a laser light show. "Pretty much at war with Russia during WW2". That's a mild way of putting it. In Finland, WW2 was all about defending against Russia. Nothing else. They are still considered the only reason we have a standing army, and a pretty impressive one. They also didn't mention our language, which is pretty unique in Europe. It is not Indo-European or Slavic, it's Fenno-Ugric. Our closest language relatives are down south in Estonia and very distantly Hungary.

Well, in the end Russia overpowered us, and the end result is what you can see today. Let's hope Ukraine can do at least as well as we did back in the day. The wife carfying competition is not the only weird competition we have. There is an air-guitar playing world championships, cellphone throwing championship, sitting on an ant hill competetion (bare assed if I remember correctly), swamp-soccer championships, and there used to be sauna world champs too, but after a guy died in the competition it got cancelled. And those are just the ones I remember on the top of my head, there's a lot of smaller competitions out there, seems like every other town has their own spin on it.

Chili eating competition. It was on TV some years ago. Pretty tough competition, they ate Finnish grown variant of Naga Morichi (long day and greenhouse makes it hotter). That competition I saw, the winner ate 70 g..

The part about Finland and Germany in WWII was well explained, it is a subject that has nuances. Nazism was never picked up, it was not ideological alliance but purely military pact. There was a brief period of ultranationalism just before Continuation war and Operation Barbarossa which disappeared once the war actually started. It was a mistake that the army supreme command did not agree with, it was more of a political decision than tactical. The idea was to first recapture lost land and THEN capture a bit of Russia as Germany was going to invade it.. Winter war is more black and white, good vs evil and for that we can add that Finland asked help from all the western allied countries but none came. Being isolated between two forces, one that was very possibly going to invade us and destroy Finland as a nation and a concept, and one that promised a special status in the "new world order".. the choice was obvious.

Lovely reaction, like always. As an Finn I and we thank you! There were a lot of info in this, but hopefully you´ll find even more information about Finland. We are like the happiest country in the world (sixth time?) even we are sometimes little bit gloomy and reserved. Still humane and people with the deep feelings! And like you somebody commented before, we have most heavy bands in the world when compering amount of heavy bands to our land mass. :) And we are also now part of the NATO too. I think we have also the biggest reserve of army soldiers in Europe. And so on.... You are lovely, thank you!

Compared to USA, we have more than two major parties in politics, compromising is still held as a crucial part of democracy and competing in politics is not a show of drama and comedy, but a discussion based on facts and different ideas how to tackle the problems. That being said, we do also have those with funny and controversial ideas, but that's o.k. Every village has to have it's own village fools. When it comes to the citizens of Finland, the Finns, money is important, but not as important as health and well-being, family, peace and tranquility.

Last presidential election there was several good candidates that I could be happy with. None if them was mocking others. That would be sure way to loose here. President leads foreign policy. For that the far left and right are surprisingly unanimous. At least after the Russian invasion to Ukraine. Suddenly NATO was good.

I feel like this video skipped a lot of interesting facts about Finland. Here are some important and cool facts I can think of right now: 1. Finland is the world's happiest country and consistently ranks among the top five for being the freest, safest, least corrupt etc. alongside its Nordic neighbors. 2. Finland's tax system is progressive, meaning that taxes increase with income. In general, our taxes are high compared to the US, but in return, we have free healthcare that for example includes ~three months of paid maternity leave. Your emplyer can't fire you because of your maternity leave. 3. Taxes also pay for a free nine-year education system, which is often rated the best in the world. 4. Finland is in the top ten of world's most technologically advanced countries. 5. Temperatures in Finland can reach up to 30°C (85°F) in summer and drop to -20°C (-5°F) in winter. This variation occurs not just between the south and north but even in Helsinki, the capital located on the southern coast. 6. Finland has mandatory military service, and every male must serve for six to twelve months. During service, you receive a daily allowance, the state partially covers your rent, and again, your employer cannot fire you because of your service. 7. Finland is a global leader in promoting equality. It was the first country in the world to grant women full political rights. Hope this helps!

Sauna championships (not sure if it's still kept in the same form after some weak Russian dropped dead from burns), Nokia phone throwing competition and I think there's a competition for throwing rubber boots too. I believe there are also swamp socker games too. All kinds of weird competitions. E: In Lapland temperatures can drop to -30-35°C almost every winter and lowest recorded temperature was -51,5°C.

Saunas would have been one good thing for the original video to mention. There are all kinds of saunas here in Finland. You can reserve a sauna section at some hockey stadiums, there are sauna cars, sauna ski lifts, portable saunas. And of course the classics like smoke saunas, and wood or electric saunas. Even in a lot of apartment buildings there is a sauna in each apartment, but the ones that don't usually have at least 1 communal sauna. It's a way of life for us

During the WW2, mutual pact with Germany was a must. People didn't like it, but since allied needed the Russians, they didn't do anything to stop them fighting Finland. So it literally was enemy of my enemy. Finland is one of these countries where it can be -30C during winter and +30C during summer. Also a neat(?) fact is that Finnish language isn't "pronounced". I need to correct the video a little bit in terms of the war history. The red guards didn't flee to Russia, that's propaganda. The red guards were poor working class Finns, the white guards were rich militarist Finns. So not only is it obvious the whites won, but they also made concentration camps to put the former reds into. It was horrific. That said, civil wars are always messy and horrible. Just pointing it out that there were some Russian soldiers supporting the red guard (because they were obviously socialists) who indeed returned to Russia when the reds lost, the red guards themselves didn't leave Finland... because they were regular Finns. And because they usually didn't have money or transport to even make a long trip like that. So no... the red guards didn't go to Russia after the civil war. In fact, once the society healed from the civil war, former red guards fought against the Soviets in the Winter War to protect the independence alongside former white guards

As a Finn, I'm proud of our nature, we have so many forests and lakes. Four seasons of the year is amazing. In summer we have days where's 24h of light and in winter we have days where's 24h of darkness - and of course good chances to see auroras on the sky, and Santa Claus because he lives in Finland :D

I think the information is pretty accurate. Our relations to Russia is pretty cold, right now. There are some things, worth to mention, if you are interested to hear. Well, first of all we have 4 seasons, meaning here you can actually see the changes. In winter time we have cold, but it’s not like a big issue. As mentioned, we have a lot of lakes and also forests, and a lot of us like to spend their free time, like vacations, nearby the nature. We enjoy that a lot. Roaming in Finland is all free for everybody, you can walk or hiking in forests as much as you like. This is actually guarded by the law, called ”every man’s right”. How ever since we are pretty much equal rights country, this of course means everybody, not just men 😁 In fact this country was actually first country, who gave women right to vote, and other equal privlidges, which some countries even still don’t have. One more important thing to mention, is that our education system is all free for all finnish citizens, no matter How high education or How many professions or degrees you want to study. In fact while you are studying, you get a small aid financially, so you don’t have to work and study at the same time. Goverment is protecting every citizen, so they would have enough money for every basic needs. How ever, we preserve this system all together, and since we don’t have rich natural resources, we accept high taxes, because it is a contribute for common good.

Finns has invented many important things. Like text massiges and heart monitors. Finns are known for their sisu. Sisu is something that starts the point when your powers are off. Then you continue with sisu. Sisu helped Finn's to fight against Soviet union / Russia, who had 300 million people against 3,5 million Finn's at that time. But we survived and kept our independent. It is something what has effect our people a lot, because Finland is so small country: everyone took a part at that war. So all of us finss are children or grandchildren some winter war soldier. What's documents about winter war. Finland is ranked happiest country in the world for seven times after 2017. And we love our country and people and we are super proud our history and unique language.

I've lived in Finland all my life, and I've never been to watch a wife-carrying competition. 😉 They are not very often, and not in many towns. In fact, the most popular sport in Finland is ice hockey. I live in southern Finland near Helsinki, and it's not always cold here. Sometimes in winter it may rain and there is not always much snow. But in northern Finland and Lapland it is really cold in winter.

Watching a facts video and learning about the countries your viewers are coming from sounds like an amazing idea! This video isn't the greatest to learn about Finland. While it is not the worst, he seems to be a bit biased and opinionated, but it is also getting quite outdated and contains half-truths presented as facts. Also, 90% of the video is quite "dry" and geopolitically opinionated The US does have a lot of strange and fun competitions that are baffling/bizarre to people from outside of the US. Unlike most European countries, we didn't give up conscription armed forces after cold war ended. We have weapons ready for 0,9 million and in urban areas nearly all houses have bomb shelters with air filters against nuclear and chemical pollution. We are training annually with more artillery shells than France or UK is capable producing. We are promoting word peace. But it's better to be prepared. We have also large storages of food, fuel, etc. stored in many small undisclosed storages. Even before NATO membership we co-operated with Norway and Sweden with military production and trained together. Now Swedish navy and air force is pretty strong, we are protecting also Sweden with strong artillery and ground force. Swedish Airforce can fly in Finnish air space if needed. We have only 63 Hornets, but combined airforces have over 250 fighter planes in Fennoscandian peninsula. We are going to have 64 F35s. Their fuselages are going to be built in Finland.

Greetings from Finland. Some might migrate to avoid the Finnish winter, but for the most parts life survives here through winter just fine. E.g. that snowy forest in the video is live and well. Houses have heating and winter clothing keeps people warm. Even the fishes are live under that ice. Btw, The North American Wife Carrying Championships have taken place every year since 1999 in Newry, Maine. While most of the Finland's population do live in the southern part of Finland, there are larger cities across the country and also in the northern part of Finland. E.g. Oulu is the 5tn largest city in Finland and Rovaniemi is the 17th largest, and the latter one-where Santa Claus has his village-is located near Arctic Circle. Yes, it's a fact; Santa lives in Finland. it's probably more interesting and relatable to learn about a new country through some links to the US. E.g. speaking of that Santa's village, it was built around the Roosevelt Cabin. As a member of the UNRRA, the precursor to UNICEF, Eleanor Roosevelt visited Finland in 1950 to witness the post-war rebuilt taking place and wanted to visit the Arctic Circle during her visit. A cabin was constructed for that event. The cabin has since been visited by few statesmen, including Lyndon B. Johnson. Finland is our neighbour country, just like Norway and Denmark. The main difference between these countries is that Swedes, Norwegians and Danish understand each other as the language comes from the same roots. Finnish however is a Finnic language of the Uralic language family, spoken by the majority of the population in Finland and by ethnic Finns outside of Finland. They however have two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. In the southwest part of Finland around the capital Helsinki, the island of Åland (an autonomous and demilitarised region of Finland) and a big part of the westcoast around Vaasa (approx. 100 kilometers south and north of Vaasa) they speak or at least understand Swedish. This is probably an inheritance from the time Finland was a part of us (Sweden). We love/hate our neighbours in two sports events, ice hockey and athletics. There is a love/hate rivalry between us in those events. We Swedes love to take the party ferries to Finland (Turku, Helsinki or Mariehamn) to dance, eat and drink on the boat for 24 hours and then buy alcohol and beer on our way home again. Source video says it a bit oddly that Finland and Germany had mutual agreement after Nov30 1939, mostly because of Molotov-Ribbentrop -treaty that made them look like allies with the Soviets, but as the relations cooled down between the giants and we were quite willing to take a second round - not alone this time - Finland became slowly part of the Operation Barbarossa. Not a very good video about Finland, but one of the most irrelevant ones. All you need to know about my home country is that Finland has been ranked the happiest country in the world for 7 years in a row (2018 - 2024) by UN's World Happiness Index. This is most likely because e.g.: - we have free education & one of the best education systems in the world - we have extremely affordable universal healthcare - we have the cleanest air in the world - we have maternal & fraternal leave with full pay - for mothers it's 105 workdays, for fathers 54 workdays - most employees have several weeks of leave every year with full pay - our country is extremely safe & has one of the best democratic systems in the world with extremely little corruption - we have lots of lakes & clean nature to enjoy - we have 700+ metal bands per 1M citizens - no other country comes even close - e.g. the U.S has about 70/1M.

After the sauna in the winter it is customary to make snow angels, did you know? So you go on your back and with your hands and feet, it's very refreshing when you continue to sauna from it. I have memory that U do this Amerian too, Did`t I remeber wrong? I've never seen such bumps on a cat's leg, and I've never even heard of them, in all outfits where there is a cat, they have their own scratching post to climb on. Dogs I have seeingin winter time out side, mecouse some brees need those, The majority of Finns are positive about NATO and the USA, then we have a small but vocal far-left wing that hates NATO and the USA, but that group is really marginal, the majority love America and its culture.

Not almost as, we have more saunas than cars. If you think about it, every home has a sauna, but then people have summer homes that also have sauna, and there is public saunas in addition. Not all families have several cars, and some families have no car at all, so that give saunas a bit of an edge. It's true that some families have two cars and only one sauna, but saunas still come ahead a bit.

I have not visit in Texas but several towns in east coast of US and also in California. Finland was not with the Germans, during the Winter war, because they had to fight the Soviets alone. Sweden sent 8000 volunteers to fight the Bolsheviks. During the winter war the Soviet Union had their non aggression pact with NAZI Germany, called Molotov /Ribbentrop pact. Stalin and Adolf Hitler was to split Europe between eachother. Soviet Union attacked Poland only 2 weeks after the Nazis had attacked it, but the west seem not to be OK with giving Soviet Union the blame of starting ww2, because it's better to blame the Nazis, because Soviet Union was part of the western allied forces.
