No. 3 is often called the 'Ball of the Century'. What makes it special is not just that it was unplayable, but it was Warne's first Ashes Test delivery and the batsman he dismissed was England's best player against spin and he was selected specifically to counter Warne. So he dismissed England's spin specialist batter, first ball.

The wonderful aspect of that delivery was the degree of drift to legside. That is what flummoxed Gatting, drawing him drawing him across far enough to expose his off stump and then the wicked turn off the pitch. It doesn't matter how many times you watch that delivery you just know that even if you knew you were about to face it, that it would STILL draw you in and get you out.

The loss of Warnie is still very raw for us as it happened earlier this year. He was not just a champion cricketer, but an extraordinarily generous man with his time and his wealth, and a legendary bloke. Gone way too soon at 52. The cream on his face is Zinc Cream ... something Aussies use to protect from sunburn .... you don't rub it in 😁 No, not a "rich man's" game ... but considered a very civilised form of sport by some standards. In cricketing countries like Australia and India, cricket is played from the time you can hold a bat. Women's cricket is also very high standard as the ladies have also been playing for a long time at an international level.👌

I think her name was Matilda Wallace but she was known as Tilly. What this video doesn't show or explain is context. #3 is known as the "ball of the century" (pre 2000). A young Shane, a prodigious talent, on his first trip to England, bowling his first ever ball in a test match on English soil. The batsman was Mike Gatting, considered one of the world's best players of spin. It rocked the entire world, and sent fear through the English team. In a sport that can, and has killed batsmen, the biggest fear is perhaps being made to look foolish. #1 was the last ball of the day's play, this time English opening bat Andrew Strauss, who was only trying to survive by blocking the ball with his body..whoops! These are all deliveries that have spun a lot. Shane was more subtle and clever than that. He'd get batsmen out with balls that didn't spin, spun a little, spun the other direction, sped up off the pitch. That variety, along with perhaps the greatest control of a spin bowler ever, a strategically sharp mind and a level of competetiveness that few could match. Batsmen would be "set up" over several overs, lulled into thinking they could read the spin, and then he'd rip one harder and it's only the last one that made the highlights reel. A true genius.

I believe (after catches) that Warne's most common dismissal was LBW (leg before wicket, where the ball would have hit the stumps but for the batsman's legs). The reason for this was the batsmen were expecting the big spin, so when it went straight on, they were struck 'plumb in front'. The drift Warne got contributed to this, with the batsmen misjudging the line of the ball.

Like this. Every single ball was his stock leg spinner. [CV I'll add explanation in square brackets, cricket lovers: ignore, you already know it. Leg spin turns from a right-handed batsmans leg side (right as you view it) toward off (left). Landing the ball in the rough part of the pitch helps it turn.] Top 10 flippers would be an awesome video :) Plenty of ownership there. What every ball had here (apart from the obvious turn) was curve and dip [you noticed the rotation Warnie put on the ball. That rotation causes curve in the air in the opposite direction of the spin. The dip is caused by a combination of the spin and the very slow speed of the delivery towards the batsman. Curve and dip are very dependent upon the physical state of the ball, the pitch and weather.] What you've just reacted to is the best leg spinner of all time on pitches and in weather that suited ripping leg spin. @@evanhayward1502 Dip is a product of overspin. My brother, a modest wrist spinner, bowled mostly topspinners which appeared to drop off the end of a table, causing batsmen to misjudge the length. Warne's understudy, Stuart MacGill, who ripped it as much as Warne, had almost no overspin, which made him much easier to play than Warne on tracks that weren't ragging sideways. (He also wasn't as accurate.)

Dude, even as an Englishman, Warne was the best spinner ever; the amazing thing was that his career ran parallel with another spin master named Muttiah Muralitharan from Sri Lanka, known to the world as Murali, and for some time they were both chasing down the record for career Test wickets on what seemed a weekly basis. There will never be another Shane Warne. He was an enigma. A Star. Just his presence on the field, made the other teams sweat big time. He is what is known as a Leg spinner ( also Wrist spinner) where their stock ball, are bowled towards the legs, and then spin across the batsman. Shane just had insane amount of spin on his deliveries. Because they use their wrist’s , they can also bowl deliveries that goes straight on after it bounced ( known as a flipper), one that lands on the open side of the batsman, then spins back into the batsman ( known as a Googly) Then they can also bowl a top spinner, that bounces up rather than deviate. Leg spinning is the hardest form of spin bowling as not everyone has the control Shane had. He could bowl them all and Brought the art of Leg spin back into the modern game. The other form of spin bowling is, called Off spin, and that is used with one finger running over the ball in a more natural way of spinning the ball. The stock ball of an Off spinner, is to bounce on the open side of the batsman, and then come back into him/ her. They don’t have as many varieties as Leg spinners. Look up Nathan Lyon to get an idea of what an Off spinner is. Both Spin actions, more rely on deceiving the batsman with the flight of the ball in the air, rather than the spin. The spin obviously plays a part, but if you can beat a batsman through the air, that’s half the battle won. Spin bowlers can be hit all over the place, if they don’t get both right, but it’s a thing of art when they do get it right. You have to hear the full commentary of number 3, often termed, "the ball of the 20th Century". It was Warne's first ever ball bowled in England. After the wicket, the commentator (Richie Benaud, who was a famous leg spin bowler in his own right) states, "Gatting (the batsman) has no idea what has happened"... a few moments later, as he is walking off and looking at the big screen, adds, "Still doesn't know!". Classic cricket moment.

Yeah that should’ve been in number 1… the way the ball moved through the air away from Gatting, then bounced and spun back in, is as iconic moment of cricket as the Jonty Rhodes dive in 1992. Don’t know how that ball wasn’t number 1. That’s the delivery that put him on the map, 1st ball in England too. Mike Gatting was one of the best players of spin bowling and one of the best batsmen of his era… made to look like a novice by a, erm, Novice hahaha

I think comes to opinion of which is his best. All these are his leg breaks, all of them have different value to them by the scalp he took. Gatting at 3 was awesome for the legend behind it, first ball in an Ashes series, against a batter who is good against spin bowling and bamboozle the batter like that. The no1 wicket is another one which is good, was one of his last Ashes wickets and Strauss who opens would have had his eye in by the time Warne came into bowl, then to be made look like a rank amature back yard cricket player. Thus the magic of the player.

The Pitch they play on is turf. So when they play 5 Day Test matches, the pitch gets worn by players running over it & cracks and holes happen as it deteriorates. So it does get harder to bat on as the bounce of the ball can be a lot more unpredictable as the game goes on. This is a big X factor in cricket. The Country hosting the matches can prepare the pitch as hard or soft as they like which can favour their own bowling team.

Warnie played in tandem with one of the world's best fast bowlers of the time Glenn McGrath [M-graah - hope that makes it easy to say right]. McGrath's fast bowling was so tight and accurate that the batsman could not score many runs, when Warne came on from the opposite end almost every batsman thought they could get runs, and Shane would let let them get a few, then WHAM! The cricket saying is that great bowlers hunt in pairs ....and these two were almost the perfect pair!

Shane was a 'leg spin' bowler, there are many 'leg spin' bowlers and most of us, would part with our left nut, to be half as good as he was. But, there is only one Shane Warne - Legend - RIP. Cricket used to be a 'gentleman's' sport and in some counties, it still is, but not in australia, it's our national game, it's played in every park, school and backyard. Glad you enjoyed it mate. 👍

Two years on from his death and this one still hurts. And I say this as someone who isn’t the biggest cricket fan. I absolutely respect the skills but don’t sit there watching every ball. But I cried when he passed away. He wasn’t a rich kid. He was someone who battled his way through a sport that can be a wealthy persons sport in Australia (that isn’t the case in other parts of the world) and whose skill made him impossible to ignore. I imagine we felt the same in Australia about Warnie’s death as Americans did when Kobe’s helicopter went down. It was just so sad. But his spirit lives on!

Shane was a legend, don't think there is another 'leg spinner' to match him. This is the good stuff about Test cricket, it's where legends got to hone their craft. There are different classes of bowlers and batsmen. Batsmen have the opportunity to score 'centuries' (100 runs without going out). Australia is known for being pretty good at cricket 😉 and the white stuff on noses and lips is Zinc cream, 100% UV screen, which is necessary when standing out in the brutal sun on an open pitch all day. Oh, and no, not a rich persons sport at all, everyone plays cricket. ❤

Warne was an incredibly gifted athlete, which is often forgotten because he didn't always keep his body in great shape. Only started taking cricket seriously when he didn't make it in Aussie Rules and within a couple of years he was one of the best bowlers in the world. And he made it look so effortless. His bowling action was sheer economy -- walked in and rolled his arm over. The level of physical coordination needed to do that reliably, with wrist-spin (hardest art in cricket) and all the variations (subtle and less so), for over after over...

It wasn't just his variations which made him so great. It was his ability to rip the leg break & get prodigious turn off the wicket, while maintaining uncanny accuracy and control. He never let up from his very first ball to the last ball of the day. Other leg spinners had variations and could also turn the ball to varying degrees. Many could bowl a better wrong 'un than Warnie could. But nobody could land the ball in the right spot, over after over after over, with barely any loose deliveries for the batsmen to score runs from. He was a freak. He stalked batsmen from the moment he came on to bowl. With every ball they tried to block or push away, Warne tightened the noose. He was always fascinating to watch, even when the pitch didn't offer much turn for the spinners.

But its a great meme if no one takes it to seriously. Clarified the rule and got it changed as a consequence. But that game was a shocker from the umps. I think we got Greg Chappell out three times in that one

OMG I laughed so hard when you said Glitch in the Matrix, that about sums Warnie up. I believe his best ever ball was the first he ever bowled in Test Cricket, it was to the best player of spin in the world, well worth a look. If you can see the worn areas of the wicket (other bowlers foot marks) these are a spinners target, being rough the ball will get some purchase off it & if you can give it a good rip like Warnie does then you can get the ball to turn corners. When you see them wearing white its a Test match which can last 5 days, in the coloured uniforms its a 1 day match, 50x6 ball overs to each side unless you loose all your Batsmen first. Some people like the 20 over version (T20) because its faster & has more action but to me I'm a traditionalist & refuse to watch it. RIP Warnie, Gone too young but will never be forgotten.

- Cricket is a gentleman’s game (or at least used to be - originated in England). It’s the most popular sport in India and 3rd most popular sport in the world so definitely not a rich person’s game. - The stuff on his nose is Zinc (type of sunscreen). - Shane Warne is the greatest bowler of all time and it’s not even close. 6:18 .. Till 1960s/early 70s .. it was mostly a England & Australia dominated game .. wherein mostly rich gentlemen used to follow it. In late 70s Game became big in Caribbean .. and in 80s/90s it grew rapidly in popularity in Indian subcontinent ... Since then its no longer a "rich gentlemen" game. 7:00 .. Thats a zinc solution cream used by players as sunscreen .. they are playing in Australia where sunrays and radiation is more intense hence many players need to use it. 7:33 .. He was a once in a lifetime player .. Another legend spinner like him is Muttiah Murlidharan (Retired now). There are many spin bowlers in world .. every team has atleast 2 spinners in their playing 11 ... but qualitywise right now no one in world cricket can bowl anywhere close to like those 2 players.

Outside of Asia, it's more common for a team to have one spinner, and some teams have none. This is dependent on the conditions. A 'green top' pitch better suits pace bowlers, whereas a brown, dirt Asian wicket favours spinners. Warne's greatest successes weren't actually in Asia but in England, where the pitches had more bounce.

Crap. It was never a rich man's game. Most of the early Australian players were bank clerks, civil servants, etc. & didn't make much out of the game. If you could play, you got a game. Same went for most of the crowds, they were just average, working class folk.

Yes there are leg spin bowlers (the style of bowling you see here) playing today. They are not as good as Warnie but they are as dangerous to batters on occasion as Warnie was pretty much all the time. As you progress through your knowledge of the game you'll discover there are many specializations in bowling. This as I said is leg spin where the spin on the ball causes it to drift (from the bowler's perspective) left to right then when it hits the ground spin back right to left, overspin also causes the ball to drop and land earlier than a batter may think. Off spin goes the opposite way, drifting right to left then bouncing left to right. Fast bowlers also have specializations, Seam bowlers look to land the ball on the prominent seam of the ball causing it to deviate as it bounces, swing bowlers use the wear and tear on one side of the ball to cause swing in the air as the 'rough' side catches more air than the smooth side, you'll see bowlers rubbing one side of the ball on their pants to maintain that smoothness. Parts of all bowlers armory is the length they choose to make the ball bounce (or pitch in cricket parlance) fast bowlers often pitch the ball short so it bounces up at the body and head of the batter (yes it is legal to aim at the batter although it is illegal to do it too often) This is often followed up by a ball aimed to pitch almost at the batter's feet (a Yorker in cricket terms) and go under the bat to hit the stumps. This variation in length and the fact that the ball bounces is what differenciates Cricket from baseball in a large way, many more possibilities are available to a cricket bowler because of this and even though a cricket bat is larger than a baseball bat these variations negate that advantage.

Thanks CV! Interesting watching someone from the States reacting to cricket. When I tried to explain cricket to my American friends that look at me as if I'm crazy. They really struggle with the concept that you can play for 5 days with no result!! 😵‍💫🤣Credit to you for giving it a go! There is no one who bowls like Shane Warne did. He is peerless. He was also well known for his off field antics - a party boy and larrikin, but he was also generous with his time particularly with kids. He was the Bradman of spin bowling. Bradman was a batsman who played from the late 1920s to 40s. He is regarded as the best batsman of all time with a batting average of 99.94, close to 40 above that of any other batsman.

I heard a story of an American bloke who stayed with friends in Australia around Xmas, and a few days later he spent half an hour or so checking the cricket with his hosts. Then he asked, "how long has this got to go?" and they answered "2 days". And he was like, woah!!!! And then, a few minutes later, he said, "who's going to win?" and the answer was, "probably going to be a draw mate". Most cricket story I ever heard :)

Not only that, in a Test Series you can play five times for five days with no result! But it's the ultimate Aussie summer too-hot-to-do-anything sport where you plonk down in front of the telly for a few hours with beers and mates watching the Test, and a few hours in someone'll walk in and ask 'What's the score?' and everyone is '..uh..I think it's about 6 for 250..?', but nobody really knows..

In some countries it is played mainly by players who can afford to play in a club. Here in Australia you play at school and it’s not expensive to play. I cried watching this. The white stuff on his nose/lips is zinc cream - its like sunscreen, but different. Zinc oxide (or zinc cream) is considered one of the best sunscreen ingredients we have access to. Hi there. Shane Warne, "Warney" was so brilliant. We all (Australia and England), remember Shane's first ball against England. He bowled out the English captain Mike Gatting. The commentator was initially silent, then he said, "He's done it, with his very first ball." The commentator was former Australian captain Ritchie Benaud, (pronounced Ben Oh). Ritchie was the same type of bowler as Shane, right arm leg spinner. Ritchie was so proud, while shocked at the same time. This form of bowling you see, is usually only perfected by experience. So even though people knew Shane had talent, nobody, not even Ritchie, would think that he would be that good, at such a young age. The other thing is that leg spin is very hard to do. Even if you can spin the ball, it is very difficult to get it to land where you want it to. To do it first ball is not even dreamt of. Most leg spinners would be happy to bowl the first one and not have the batsmen whack it away for big runs. But "Warney" not only landed it, but it was perfect. As Mike Gatting was walking off, Ritchie was saying, "He still doesn't know!" Mate, Mike Gatting was just like you when you saw the first dismissal in the video, the number 10. The ball he bowled to Gatting spun one way, then curved of the air to go around his bat but still hit the stumps. Poor Gatting was thinking, how did that just happen? Another great thing about Warney was his personality. He was a fun and funny. The people loved him. Warney loved the ladies. His wife left him after he was caught cheating by the newsmedia. They have children together and they remained friends in the end. He was in a relationship with Liz Hurley. You may have seen her in the Wesley Snipes movie "Passenger 57". Oh yeah, she was also in Austin Powers the Spy who Shagged me. Liz said that Shane would make her laugh. There is the T20 cricket men's world cup on at the moment, here in Australia. The game between Australia and England was abandoned due to rain, but the India vs Pakistan match was a great one. All of these wickets in the video were ones in which he spun the ball from right to left, hitting the wicket. Warne took plenty of other wickets that weren't like this. If you check out "Shane Warne bowls Richie Richardson", you'll see a delivery called "The Flipper", in which the ball doesn't spin and doesn't bounce much, and goes straight under the bat of the batsmen and into the wicket.

He practised a lot, and could pitch the ball to the same spot with uncanny accuracy. The torque he generated was insane and he could spin it every which way - left, right, skidding on shallow and bouncing high. A Legend. One of a kind. He was a handy footballer (AFL) but i think it's fortuitous he chose to bowl, was a great tactician, could field brilliantly and became a decent batsman too. A lovable larrikin. He used to smoke during games back in the day, and hated a beer 😂.

The person with the bat is called a ‘batter’ or ‘batsman’. The white stuff on his nose and lips is called Zinc cream, similar to sunscreen. As a complete contrast in styles of bowling, check out the highlights for Wasim Akram and Malcom Marshall, probably the greatest left arm and right arm fast bowlers of all time :) And no one can bowl like Shane Warne. I'm English, and the number of times he destroyed our team when he played was depressing. The biggest rivalry in the game is The Ashes, England vs Australia, and Warne always bowled brilliantly against us, win or lose. He's arguably the greatest bowler of all time in terms of stats, and undisputed the greatest spin bowler.

There are bowlers who can do this, but not with ease and control of Warne. What they cant seem to do, at will, is vary the height of the bounce as well as the amount of turn as you saw in no. 1. Not only did it cut back massively but also kept low. In no.10, the ball cut back massively but bounced high.

There are other spin bowlers but very few can put that amount of revolutions on the ball. Australian wickets are hard and are better suited to pace bowling, so Shane had to put a lot of spin on the ball to get it to move. Muttiah Muralitharan from Sri Lanka was another great spin bowler.

So the white stuff on his nose is Zinc cream to prevent sunburn. The clothing which makes them look like rich boys is a carry on from the English routes and traditions of the game. The spin on the ball is literally just called spin, the amazing thing about Warne's spin was when it combined with the speed he sent it down the pitch it would drift heavily making it hard for the batsman to know where it would land let alone where it would spin to after it hit the ground. Warnie was also a master of landing the ball in the scuffed up ground on the pitch made by other bowlers. The scuffed areas allows the ball to gain huge amounts of grip. If you are really like what he is doing I suggest you watch Shane Warne spin master-class where he explains exactly how he does it. Probably not good for a reaction video but really interesting.

SHANE Warne is hands down the GREATEST SPIN BOWLER to have played the game. He took multiple wickets all over the world, against every Country. He is 2nd on the all time list but the other Spinner has a weird action that can be argued is it legal , also he took 70% of all his wickets in the Sub Continent on Spinning wickets " India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh " he didn't take too many on Fast pitches where Warnie took them on every Country on every Pitch. Warne was one of a kind. Was able to spin it more than anyone even in this new generation. Helps when you got fast bowlers creating the foot marks and Warne aiming for those roughed up marks to generate more crazy angles hitting the stumps. Just meant he gets a lot harder to play as the game goes on.

To answer the question, there is noone in cricket past, present or future that will ever bowl like Shane Warne again. What he could do with the ball is unbelievable, as you saw! The style of bowling he uses is called leg spin (somethings called wrist-spin), and is the hardest type of bowling to do. Leg spin bowlers often struggle with consistency and lack some control due to how aggressive the wrist action is when releasing the ball. Warne is the outlier - he almost never bowled a bad ball and had such unbelievable control of the ball, plus spun it further than any other spinner with the exception of one or maybe two others in the games history. He terrorised batters for almost 20 years internationally, particularly English and South African batsmen, but as an Englishman myself, I have so much respect for him and the way he played the game, he is truly a one of a kind player, in the same category as Tom Brady, Babe Ruth, Lebron James, Michael Jordan etc. Watching your reaction to this really made me smile, thanks for the content!

There's all the ways and speeds you can bowl a blank ball, add a seam and the possibilities go way up, then there's the ways the bowlers can aim for any cracks on the pitch that develop over the game, the possibilities go through the roof! Warnie was one of the greatest bowlers of all time.

We lost Warnie recently and he’s sadly missed, he had a grandstand named after him. He also has a statue in his honour. I don’t know about a rich man’s game, but it’s known as a gentleman’s game.😁😊

As much as I love Warnie, I have to admit with my hand over my heart, that Muralitharan is absolutely someone who is close to him. I go back and forth on it in my own head, pointing out that Muralitharan played more on pitches more conducive to spin, that he didn't have a powerhouse quite like McGrath that he had to fight for wickets with. But I then have to think about things the other way, that he has a higher strike rate than Warne, that McGrath keeping one batsman for Warne to pick at over after over could actually help him get more wickets, that sometimes the bounce of the Gabba was actually more helpful than pure sidespin from the Sub-Saharan pitches. Honestly I think it may be a tough question forever, and although some of my best memories were watching Warnie and McGrath on the TV while I was playing on a computer growing up, I have to say there at least very very close.
