As a former wicket keeper I can tell you it is bloody difficult keeping to a leg spinner. But one that bowls at 90km/h with so many different grips is a nightmare. BTW Warnie will help him with his flipper, he has always been willing to share his knowledge and experience.

Clarrie grimmett invented the flipper delivery and passed it on to other spinners. Clarrie and Tiger orielly were a pair of legspinners that played for Australia in the 1930s, legspin is pretty much a artform/ science all of its own. As a kid growing up bowling it before Shane warne made it popular it was a great challenge to be able to deceive batsman in so many different ways. Was great to watch warnie do the same thing especially to the west Indies, south Africa and England.

There have been other very skilled leggies such as Grimmett and Benaud of Australia, Tich Freeman of England, Abdul Qadir of Pakistan and others, but with Warne in particular too many batsmen got into playing the man instead of the ball. He knew how to get inside batsmen's heads; he would have been a genius snake oil salesman.

Poor old Stuart MacGill, always think of him, he would have been first picked anywhere in the world but Warne was in the only spot for an Aussie spinner we rarely saw both play together. Turned the ball harder. His problem was that he wasn't mates with everyone and batting was terrible.
@joyfulzero853

As Warne alluded to he had to take time out for a shoulder operation and lengthy convalescence at the height of his career. The wear and tear on the shoulder is something that wrist spinners in particular have to bear in mind and it generally seems to be the 'googly', 'wrong 'un', 'bosie' ,or whatever you choose to call it, that puts most strain on the shoulder. After Warne returned he rarely bowled the googly but was able to convince many batsmen that it could happen any moment. He always had the flipper as a variation and was adept at suggesting he had a brand new delivery before major test series. Batsman sweated over picking this devilish invention and just got out to his standard repertoire. He would have made a great snake oil salesman!

For me, it will always be the Shane Warne "grunt" as he bowled, his shoulder in total pain but he kept turning it square from day one on a green top, a master and true digger, the other reason to love Warnie is that any leggie from a kid to a pro can ask him for advice and he gives it (as he learnt himself from Benaud and others)

Good stuff, This is the video I suggested in comments on one of your videos a few months ago. Fascinating to watch technique being shown in detail. If you get a chance do check out Viv Richards batting ( I appreciate I've mentioned him a few times) but he'd be the cricket equivalent of Joe DiMaggio (Bradman would be the Babe Ruth) if DiMaggio had played in the 70's & 80's. Viv was better than Tendulkar & better than the rest in my view. All the best.

re: your comment of Warne "messing" with batsmen: On Warne's first Ashes tour of England, Australian captain Allan Border instructed him in the warm-up matches not to show the English county batsmen too much, to only bowl his leg break and not put too much spin on the ball. As a result, Warne's figures in these games were only average at best and the English cricketing press dismissed him as a threat. Then the First Test began, and the "real" Warne was seen, his very first ball (i.e. the "Ball of the Century") bowling Mike Gatting and England were shell-shocked and never recovered.

Man I love you Gabe, if only more Cricket fans could see what you see. Bowling is beautiful (most beautiful part of the game) & laws often are against the Bowlers & even all the glamour goes to the Batsmen thanks to the media's obsession with big shots, etc 12:26 😂 funny you said that coz it's actually been a controversy where people have said he's older than he's said to he which means he was too old for U19 Cricket when he played U19 Cricket & started his rise to the top.
@waynec3563

The one that Gabe called "wow!" is known as The Ball of the [20th] Century. It wasn't just the spin on the ball that did the batsman there (Mike Gatting), but also the curve through the air. If you find a video reviewing that ball, you'll see that the ball curves into the batsman quite a lot, pitched well outside leg stump and hit the top of off stump. It was the perfect leg break.

Warne's faster ball was the flipper and, later in his career, top spinner. The flipper would come out around 95-100km/h, or about the same as Rashid's standard ball! Hate to think how fast Rashid's flipper would be.

Love Rashid Khan. Jeez I wish he played for the Sixers and not the Strikers. Not a big “turner” (sideways movement) but he gets just enough both ways and he is difficult to pick with his very fast arm, and his speed makes it harder to take steps forward to meet the ball. Warne was slower, loopier, and spun the ball more. The similarity between them ? Mastery of control. And the biggest, number one thing for a spinner is control. Where it pitches, and how it gets there. All the great spinners in cricket history - Warne, Murali, Kumble, Harbhajan, Gibbs, Grimmett, Oreilly, Underwood, Valentine - all had great control number before they had variety and deception.

There are many ways to bowl in cricket, fast, medium-fast, medium pace, swing bowling and spin bowling. Spin bowling you can try to be a wrist spinner or finger spinner but spinning it with your wrist which these guys can do is the hardest bowling craft to master and the room for error out on field is small. Cricket clubs in normal games will not tolerate wrist spinners, especially leg spinners if they get it wrong. It is so hard to master that the normal thing that happens is a leg spinner will end up having a few of his deliveries come out of back of his hand not quite how he likes and it lands down the pitch to the batsmen short of where he really wants it and when that happens the batsmen can smash it for six easier than pace bowlers as they got the time to adjust. So what happens is for every ten thousand kids that try this in games hardly any of them will have control enough to be bowl very often . Cricket captains are reluctant to take the risk with leg spinners. Which also makes it hard for someone learning leg spin to get the match conditions to apply their craft. Everything is against someone trying to be a leg spinner. It is far easier and more common for spin bowlers to be off spinners and only spin it with their fingers. So to be as good as Shane Warne was or Rashd Khan now is so so hard. These guys are simply amazingly skilled and must have spent many many hours trying to bowl what they do. You could follow a Test team of some nations over a decade and never see a leg spinner picked in the team. There just so few of them around because it is such a hard craft to master. When I played cricket I was a swing bowler, and my stock ball was an outswinger. But sometimes at practice would mess around and try some leg spin.. It is so hard to even get the ball to spin like they could and sometimes it would spin a long way but then to try to replicate it on the spot was near impossible. The respect for leg spinners that master their craft is high. Right now and as Australian follower I am interested to see how leg spinner Mitchell Swepson goes. It will be very hard to be picked in a Test team as off spinner Nathan Lyon has been so consistent and other three pace bowlers usually do a good job that there is no spot for leg spinner in the team. Gabe's passion for bowling in cricket is great to see by the way. He is right, so much of the game , conditions and rules favour the batting in the game.

I've always felt that bowling was the offence and that batting was the defence. Realistically, both can be offence or defence, but when you see a team post 350 and then skittle the opposition out for 120 or so then bowling looks much more offensive. I recall an interview with Warne once where he credited breaking both of his legs as a youngster as to why his wrists were so strong to let him get so much spin on the ball. He said that he used to sit on a skateboard and push himself around, two months later and he had wrists that could turn a ball the width of a cricket pitch.

Shane warne only really had 3 deliveries (leg spin googly (which he rarely bowled, and the flipper(which he didn’t bowl much after his shoulder surgery)). In the early 2000s he developed the zooter/slider (basically a straight ball that looked like a leg spinner out the hand). Apart from that he came out with new “mystery” balls before every series which were really media sensationalism which he played to. He knew what he was doing lol, he’ll say he had 10 different deliveries in his career lol

Murali definitely chucked his doosra, but his stock off-break was legit. As for the comments he was not a chucker, it needs to be realised that: (i) if a bowler was reported for having a suspect action, it was up to that country's cricket board to investigate and clear or ban, and video evidence of net sessions (where the bowler made sure he bowled with a "clean" action), and the ICC upheld that board's findings. And there was no way that the Sri Lankan authorities were going to ban their star. (ii) Murali WAS found to bowl with a bending/straightening of his elbow. However, the ICC subsequently defined a permissible angle which was more than that which Murali bent his,thus making his action within the allowable bounds and allowed him to continue bowling. There was also an unofficial edict from the ICC that Mruali was NOT to be no-balled after that by umpires, else they would be dropped from the level at which they umpired (Australian umpire Ross Emerson never adjudicated international matches again after calling Murali, and retiredcafter his national credentials were revoked); as far as the ICC was concerned, the issue was closed and it was time to move on (basically, Murali became "untouchable"). (iii) Sri Lanka were seen as an important developing market and threatened to withdraw from international cricket if Murali was banned, which the ICC would/could not allow to happen. The FACT of the matter was Murali COULD bowl a ball that spun the other way that wasn't his "doosra", but he bowled this with a different action (basically, a leg break) but batsmen could pick this. IMO it was a shameful cop-out by the ICC; all they needed to do was ban his doosra but by not doing so then not only did it cast doubts upon his career but it led to a new generation of off-spinners from all over the world bowling with an illegal action - ironically (or should I say, hypocritically) most of these bowlers WERE deemed to have an illegal action and were forced to modify their technique. BTW the ONLY off-spinner I've seen who could bowl a doosra without chucking was Paul Wiseman from New Zealand; he bowled it with a very high arm/shoulder action and effectively delivered the ball out of the side of his hand.

LBW is not difficult to understand at all. I'm not sure how people that have been watching for 20 years don't understand it. Maybe they don't actually watch the game.
