This is one of my favorite shows ever. Ronnie Barker is a genius and his interplay with all the other people on the show is amazing. If you haven't already, another great Ronnie Barker show is Porridge. Richard Breckinsale co-stars and like Open All Hours Barker's ability to banter is amazing.

still had double meaning. at the time we had lost british india (Pakistan, India, Nepal, Burma, Bangladesh) and was just losing british Malay (independence of Malaysia and Singapore). It's also social commentary about the races that now war with eachother rather than an imperial rule. (it's the old saying "you never know you miss something until it's gone") You know india still use the same railway network the British built from the 19th century? Yeah, thats why imperialism is good.

I grew up along shops and people like this :') These old style shops were still around in the 90's As Arkwright used to fear over the super markets, so did the small shop owners. As in the series, they were very fond of money, selling over priced goods, and splitting multi pack goods to sell separately etc. Arkwright wasn't just a character, but a typical stereotype. Small shops were hubs for gossip, and shop keepers always had good rapport.

The classic genre of British humour.... perfectly safe to watch withthe kids, but with enough nauthyness thrown in for parents to be giving each other a nudge understanding the inuendo in a lot of the comments. I (partly) grew up not far from where the outdoor scenes were filmed, we went shopping in the town where it was filmed but at the sa sa sa sa sa sah sah supermarket, not small shops like this. The small shop keeper stereotypes in that area are slightly overdone but not by much! There were 2/3 in the area that used to follow you around the shop saying " you look with you eyes not with your hands" if you were a working class kid. An army surplus shop that used to sell the worn out garbage to kids at full price until a father reminded him of his manners at high speed one day (you didn't mess with miners wives or kids and get away with it for long). I later worked in a traditional butchers shop and the owner gave Arkwright a run for his money in the tightness stakes!

A business manager used to whistle the theme from The Great Escape. I got that many free samples and favours, to keep costs down, he called me "the scrounger". Hi, again my friend. The Last of the Summer Wine was the longest running british sitcom in history i believe. The one episode i love was "The frozen Turkey Man". Also "Ever Decreasing Circles" pitted a very organized, serious, try-hard man against a casual, everything-works-out-for-him-naturally neighbor. Very good show. Welcome to the wonderful world of enjoying Open All Hours, probably the most brilliant comedy since I Love Lucy. Arkwright is indeed careful with his money, that is half his charm. But the innuendo is the best - "I like my coffee like I like my women, strong, dark and with two lumps." Anyway, I'm glad you've discovered our treasure. We've been fortunate to have had him for about 40 years. Alas, we will never see his like again!

I want to point out this is not the only time Ronnie Barker and David Jason appeared together, there’s an episode of Porridge where they feature. The talent is so strong with these 2 legends. As a suggestion maybe do a feature about David Jason., he’s been a very busy actor over the years. There was a time we had corner shops like this in most towns but they have had their day as it were. Nowadays it’s Express stores with the stench of capitalism and a minimum wage to match it. How things have changed.
