Susan Boyles story, makes me think of how much talent is lost. Lost just because some people are a little odd, a little awkward, don't quite fit the mold. How many people don't get the job, because of first impressions. I was as guilty as everyone else, who made that first impression, when she walked out on to that stage. I think she made a lot of money on the back of that performance. But I'm just glad she got to show her talent to such a big audience.

Some people don't get through even when they do fit the mould. Contestants have to pass through around two panels of judges before they even get to be in front of Simon Cowell, and the early panels will fail someone if they're too similar to someone that's already been passed through. They want people that stick out for good TV. I know for a fact that on one accasion two identical twins with the same voice applied for the X-Factor and only one of them was passed through.

I love Susan, she went on to great things after this, has a number of successful albums, and has sung in concert all over the world. She even got to sing a duet with Elaine Paige and I think was actually the better singer. Simon Cowell became very fond of her and always treats her like a really good friend. She always kept it real, she still lives in her home town and is still very humble.

Susan Boyle was in the news in America after that night when she first went on stage in front of Simon Cowell and the other judges. I remember them talking about the reaction of the judges and the audience when she walked out in stage and how they didn’t expect her to have such an amazing voice. I’ve actually only ever heard her voice, this was the first time I saw her. It just goes to show how cruel Western society is that they judge people so negatively by their looks. I’ve definitely heard of her here on the east coast and she’s mentioned all of the time still on the radio.

Both careers did take off. Calum had a big hit in Europe. Susan has given concerts all over. Btw…that young woman that was weepy during his performance, is Calums sister Jade, who had just been given the red buzzer by Simon….and then Simon gave him the golden buzzer. Imagine how conflicted Calum was about Cowell after the show?

I was just a kid when Susan was on the show, I can remember punching my older brother telling him to shut up when he was taking the piss out of her. Then she opened her mouth and sang he never said another word. This women is fantastic

Just a bit of trivia for you. In 2009, Susan Boyle didn't actually win Britain's Got Talent. In the final, she was beaten by a dance troupe called Diversity (members of which still dominate quite a few varied strands of British TV). I don't think Ms Boyle was particularly bothered - she was the first to congratulate them and looked genuinely happy for them. She wasn't a natural fit for stardom, but she's gone on to make millions. Similarly, Calum Scott only came sixth in the final for his year's BGT - but he's got a nice little international career going (he's popular in south America) and tends to produce 'sleeper' hits that don't do much when they first get released but finish by being the most downloaded song of the year. Two good choices, there, Mike.

I feel like the thing that was lost from Calum's audition was that immediately before, his sister had given a decent audition and been rejected. So there was an emotional element that he was dealing with, and also the judges presumably were expecting to have to reject both members of the family for being OK at singing but not special enough to go through. So then Calum pulled out that charming, soulful performance of his own arrangement of a famous (more upbeat, dancey) track and it really stood out.

I thought Calum's sister Jade was a decent singer too, but her audition was brutal. She sang for about 20-30 seconds and Simon stopped her and asked for another song. So, she started another song and Simon stopped her again very quickly and sent her off. Her biggest dream was to be a singer and she was absolutely crushed. My impression was that Calum wasn't quite as eager to be a singer. Perhaps that allowed him to be more calm and composed when he was on stage though he did come up with a great take on that song. very different than the original.

Like you, I don't really watch these types of shows, but I agree it's wonderful to see people perform well and when I first watched Susan Boyle, I was also impressed with her talent and was happy that she succeeded afterwards. The place she said she came from is about half way between Glasgow & Edinburgh, the two largest cities in Scotland and about 30 minutes from each. If she was living 30 minutes from Houston, she would just say she was from Houston, but here in the UK people tend to be more specific, even if they name a town that no one knows. (I tend to follow more the US way of saying where I'm from, but that's probably because of the time I spent living outside of the UK in various parts of the world). So, as tradition when watching your videos, I tend to also drink a beer and each time it's a different one. In addition to my usual favourites, I get a case each month delivered of curated craft beer from all over the UK and sometimes abroad. It's a lesson in not judging folk. Everytime I see that clip, I'm tears. Doesnt matter what mood I'm in.. as soon as she begins to sing, it's like the taps are turned on. Just beautiful. There's only her, and Paul Potts in the entire history of that programme, that being these emotions to me. Normal people, from ordinary towns and cities, doing mundane boring day to day jobs, who hold as yet unfulfilled dreams. Dreams of a better life. A better place. A better world. Who secretly harbour unimaginable talent. I think it's that, rather than their particular skills, which is the root cause of my emotional response to them, because you know, there, in THAT moment, they're fulfilling that promise. I'm afraid I can't shed any light on Calum Scott- I don't watch BGT, and don't pay much attention to singer's names when I hear a song on the radio, so I don't know if I've heard any of his stuff. I hope he did well, though, he was good. Susan Boyle was impossible to ignore. She was EVERYWHERE, and I think it quickly became difficult for her. She has done very well for herself in the years since, and she's worth tens of millions now. What both clips have in common is that you can actually see the moment £ signs appear in Simon's eyes. The blonde lady is Amanda Holden, who has performed on stage, and to some extent, TV, although I would struggle to name anything she has been in. (I'm ignoring Piers Morgan. Always the best approach, I think) The second lady is Aleesha Dixon. She had a pop career in the early 2000's, then won Strictly Come Dancing. She has a really wicked laugh. The other male judge is David Walliams. He came to fame as a comedy actor in sketch shows (some movies), and is lately an incredibly successful author of children's books (my son loves them). He's sold well over 25 million, apparently. He also did some crazy things to raise a lot of money for Comic Relief over the years, like swimming the English Channel, and another year the entire length of the Thames.

@@darrylspurlock1620 it’s a tv series that lasted quite a while that features many different characters with their own quirks. A guy in a wheelchair that gets up and walks about when his carer isn’t looking, a man that thinks that he’s the only homosexual around (he’s not), and a woman called bubbles who...tries to get around so to speak.
