Yes Götz von Berlichingen is on of the medieval stars in Germany. Especially in the southwestern part. This is surely promoted through the novel of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe about him - the greatest of the German poets.

16th century - so not really medieval though. He basically became a villain because he behaved like a knight of old in a world that had already moved on from medieval society.

As a mercenary, he made enough money to afford his own castle (he didn't inherit anything from his father, as he wasn't the oldest son) and he had quite some children as well. He also got himself thrown out of the Roman-Catholic church several times, but never seemed to have minded it much.

The members of Imperial knights familly ,von Berlichingen ' are protestant. But this family was founder of a monastry ( Schöntal?) , so the monks could not say : Go away! Years ago during a guided tour of a small swabian society, i visited places of Götz' s life. The last official descendant of him died in 1920s, last inofficial descendant in 1960s. But descendants of his brothers are still allive, one i saw in Götz' former castle in Jagsthausen.

Götz became 1521 a Protestant. Like many other Free Imperial Knights at this time. Götz received twice an Imperial Ban (Reichsacht). But never an excommunication by the Catholic Church. It was his personal wish to be buried at the ancestral burial place of the von Berlichingen family, the (Catholic) monastery in Schöntal. His grandson Philipp Ernst von Berlichingen sold Burg Hornberg (castle) and Neckarzimmern (the village below) already in 1594. One reason was that claims from his servants from Neckarzimmern against him because of unacceptable treatment were brought/accepted before the Imperial Court.

Your pronounciation of Götz is really good. Götz von Berlichingen lived in Baden-Württemberg as you do. The two most connected castles to him are Burg Hornberg and Jagsthausen. The iron hands are shown at Burg Hornberg. You can surely visit that Museum.

I recommend, you go visit the north of "your" state and go to the Berlichingen Castle (Schloss Berlichingen). The whole area there is quite nice, around the rier Jagst. And at the castle, they have open air showings of the Goethe play about him If your German is not too bad, you might get to know some German classics!

He lived at the time of the decline of medieval knighthood, as new weapon technologies and new battlefield tactics like the lansquenet infantry (in German Landsknecht, initially Lanzknecht after their main weapons, the lance or the pike, Landsknecht being the German version of the Swiss Reisläufer mercenaries) took over. In 1522 a friend of Götz, Franz von Sickingen led the Knight's Revolt, aimed mainly to forcibly remove Prince-Bishop Richard of Trier and to secularize his lands (and give them to the Brotherly Convention of Knights), but failed. Götz did not participate, because he was since 1519 prisoner of war by the Swabian League in Heilbronn and was only released in 1522 against an oath to abandon all feuds and to pay 2,000 guilders plus the catering costs during his imprisonment. During the Peasant's War he was "conscripted" by the "Neckartal-Odenwälder Haufen" led by Georg Metzler as captain because of his military experience, but deserted soon. Remarkable about him is that he was one of very few knights writing his own autobiography (or rather dictating it to his writer), after he had returned from his last campaigns - in 1540 the emperor had pardoned the 60 year old Götz, because he needed his military experience.

Götz von Berlichingen is mostly known for this one sentence: "Er möge mich im Arsche lecken". Because of this quote he's known up until today. To be honest: I never really thought of him as a hero.

he isnt. If you want refer him to something, he is more like a rascal. Someone who knows how to get his hands on money BUT he also had a temper and raged often wich ultimatly get to him.

To the comment of the day You will get stabbed or shot in Germany. In a small city near where I live where gunshots fired and two people were injured. In the same city are gangsters/the mafia and it’s really just a relatively small city. And a couple was stabbed to death in a train.
