Fun fact, Dave Vanian (lead singer from The Damned) used to be a grave digger. Captain Sensible, the guitarist also did a lot of solo work. I've got an anxiety disorder so don't do big events, but The Damned are the only band I've ever gone to see live! Give some of their other songs a listen, they're a really good band! And yes, that was indeed Chris Barrie. Also notable in this episode was Dawn French. The subliminal images pop up from time to time as a joke as there were concerns regarding subliminal messages in television around that time, so you may want to keep an eye out for more in future episodes.

Dawn French was one of the actresses in the 'advertisement' scene, a very prominent British comedian at the time and for the proceeding 25 years... The Vicar of Dibley is worth checking out if you haven't as yet??? She also worked with the rest of the crew on 'The Comic Strip Presents'. Also, Aexei Sayle, who is in every Young Ones episode, who was the Vampire / Harry the Bastard, was also one of the Comic Strip crew, and did a silly music video from 1984, "Ullo John, Gotta New Motor' which might be worth looking at...

The still is actually from a 'test card' type film. Basically before BBC channels had full schedules, like in the 70s, they'd often have periods where they just had music and random visuals between shows. So this would have been a reference to that. Ghost the movie would have been about 15 years later.

Fun fact when the guys are sitting on the sofa to watch the film Rick is holding a copy of an actual video nasty (horror films that were illegal to sell or own before age ratings became legally required on video like with cinema) called nightmare maker which does make me wonder if the police payed the bbc a visit after broadcast particularly because, and this is true, the young ones was surprisingly popular with the police. Also the reason for the subliminal messaging is because home video was just coming in back then and they wanted to do something that would get people going backwards and forwards, in series 1 they do this with a 5th housemate who is always lurking in a shadowy corner and so can only just see them.

They inserted a few frames here and there just to annoy people -- I seem to remember Lise Mayer discussing it in a documentary. Apparently they did it just to piss off the BBC and to upset people who were flipping out about subliminal messages in rock music (the 80's were an interesting time..). The other ones I remember are a tree frog leaping, a dove in flight, a dripping tap, a skier, and a frame from the end credits of Carry On Cowboy, which was not one of the more memorable of the "Carry On" series

In the early days of UK TV (1950s, 1960s), there were regular times when programmes were not being broadcast. These gaps in the schedule were filled by inoffensive stock footage such as 'The Potter's Wheel'. These 'filler' films are pointless things to use in subliminal messages. That's the joke. Our expectations are subverted.

"I hope snogging SPG counts" refers to the Scottish accented rat-like hamster belonging to Vivian who for some unexplainable reason he named SPG. SPG stood for the Metropolitan Police - Special Police Group, basically riot police with a penchant towards overtly aggressive behaviour. They were very much the topic in the 70's. Alexie Sayles characters fit into the series in the very beginning as their landlord Jerzie Balowski, in subsequent episodes, he plays different members of the Balowski family that come into contact with the group. The most famous person to appear in the Young Ones didn’t actually appear in any episodes, but rather in the Young Ones comic relief charity single release in the mid 80's with Cliff Richard singing Living Doll. It was Cliff's second time at UK number one with the song.

For some context 'video nasties' were 170 or so movies from the 70s and early 80s that had been refused certification by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) for excessive violence. When VCRs became popular in Britain in the early 80s, there was panic from conservative morality campaigner Mary Whithouse that children and adults were watching material that was illegal under the Obscene Publications Act (until 1984 it was legal for anyone to buy or rent videos regardless of age, nor was there any requirement to show a rating sticker or for the video to be even rated). Some of the movies on this list include The original 'I Spit on Your Grave', 'The Driller Killer', 'Zombie Flesheaters', and 'Canibal Holocaust'. Whilst some are still banned to this day, most have now been rated and released either uncut or with some cuts, I Spit on Your Grave is this most obvious example of the latter.

Yes that was CHris Barrie. No that wasn't Ghost, Young Ones was filmed in the early 80's and Ghost was released in 1990.
