They are restaurant and especially pubs, that you can pull up to and stay all along the canals, very handy if you dont fancy cooking or you want a drink

Happy new year sweetiepie. I lived on a narrow boat for 4 years and it was great. Complete freedom. You can move when you want, stop where you want & travel around through countryside or towns.

Yeah sweety (yes I talk to Surinamese a lot (I live in Holland)) the housing problem is huge here, there is no more land to build on, so they started to build flowting houses everywhere now but they kost millions. In the 60ties and 70tie hippies started to live on boats. After my devorce I had to live in squatters with junkies, drug dealers and mentally ill violent people for 6 years for I could not get a little place for myself. Now I do and I often cry happy tears to be warm dry and safe, so do the people that live on boats in Holland, you understand.

Narrow boat living started when the canals were the main way to transport bulk around the country before trains. The whole family lived on there. Very like the big US trucks where the driver and sometimes his partner live in the back of the truck. Caravanners will recognise 90% of the features and living space on the boat.

My Mum was born in one when they were working boats . They were pulled by horses walked along the canal bank . They had two boats the size of this one but they carried cargo so 80 % of the space on the boat was China clay . They were the trucks of the day . When the railways were built the canals were abandoned but were restored for tourism. And some people live aboard as rents are so high In the south.

The canal network passes through a lot of citys ,towns and villages and a lot of those towns and villages are there because of the canal network from when goods were shipped by boat before trains existed, you can have a permanent mooring at a boat yard or just travel around with over seven thousand miles to explore through the beautiful quiet countryside. Theres even boats that deliver coal and firewood and in the summer ice cream boats 😃👍🇬🇧

Great, interesting video and thanks for your reaction, thank you Girlz. As far as I know one needs to pay for a docking area, maybe annually, but not sure. We call these Barges and in the summer it's an awesome place to live on a Barge. Thanks Island Girlz and a Happy and Peaceful new Year to you too. Love and hugs from Ireland xx

hey girl, i dont live in one but know people who do you can only stay in one spot for 2 weeks, then you must move, what people do is live on them, they will move there car a mile down the canal, walk back to the boat, move it to where they parked, so they can go to work, also the moving, is for a reason, its to help stop the water ways becoming stangnent, moving, moves the water, and helps give oxygen to the water as well as that, the boats only do walking pace, the reason for this, is, so they dont cause a wake, which hurts and erodes the bank sides as well and keeping the wild life habitat protected. These canals now really for leasure, were the backbone of the industrial revolution that occured in britain, the videos you have watched, these were the way the got coal, textiles, to the factories, before trains arrived, and the road ways and haulage

These are very common, we have a vast canal system that covers most of the country, you can pay for some to stay or you can travel around, the canals have pubs every 10 miles or so that you can pull up to. Im currently saving up to buy one of these

Have you seen Bridgewater Canal live today. It has breached . Some boats are resting on the bottom and the Canal auth have planked both ends so the water is low and the boats could be there months.

You can choose to buy a permanent mooring and do short cruises or longer,' say over the summer or be a continuous cruiser. These have to move every 2 weeks at least but may over winter in a marina. There is annual fee which covers the maintenance of the waterways, fresh water supply points, sewer and 'trash' disposal stations. There are over 2500 miles of navigable inland waterways in Britain and more in all Ireland. This figure is set to increase as the disused waterways are brought back into use and new canals systems added. A lot of the new boats (maximum 70 ft long by 7 ft wide) have integrated solar on the entire roof and are electrically driven with a generator back up (the new sections of canal have electrical hook-up points). There are some boats with water treatment plants that convert canal water into drinking water.

We've had canals since long before the internal combustion engine were invented. You could set your clocks on how frequently the canal boats ran.

Have you seen the people who live in converted vans/buses? I love those videos as well, this narrowboat build is beautiful! Love the wood burner so much. These were used originally to transfer goods before trains came along. I also think that jumper she's wearing is hand knit, a woman after my own heart. I had a twin tub washing machine for a while and I would LOVE to have one again. I'd love to have an 'Edna'!!

People have been living on canal boats since the 18 century in Britain and Ireland, Island. The canal boats or canal barges are beautiful and cosy and very quiet, not too much roads with noisy traffic to bother you.

every time i see someone react to a narrow boat i direct them to 'the boat that guy built' it's a mini series of about 6 episodes from one of the most famous motorcycle riders in the uk.. he has done a bunch of other stuff too well worth looking into. 'Guy Martin' he is the modern day 'Fred Dibnah' which is another rabbit hole you may need to go down...

These Narrowboats cost between £60,000 to £100,000 to buy new, or even more if you have a big budget. Some places will charge you a morning fee, but there are quite a few places where you can just more up for free.
@keithparker51252 күн бұрын
It's not exactly free - you have to pay for a boat licence (average £850 per year, extra if you are a continuous cruiser), and if you are moored just on a canal as a continuous cruiser you have to move roughly every 14 days. A permanent mooring will cost average between £25 - 70 per year per foot of boat and will also incur council tax for the place in which you are moored. You also need insurance and you will need to pay for your toilets to be pumped out when your waste tank is full.

Well fun ideal my friend had a live aboard in Gloucester uk but we couldn't get out the dock as was the first uk lock down on covid summer was hot ! And the reason he couldn't get out was hes key broke in the lock and he was drunk and fell in the water sort of funney? Aparently u can get all the way 2 London by boat on canal!?
@captaincorky2372 күн бұрын
You can stop your boat and park anywhere. If you have a canal licence, - off you go! There are some amazing videos of people hiring a boat in Wales. One of my friends did this. He packed six people into the boat and this made it kind of cheap. Then the bunch of crazy freaks and hippies went up and down the country.

Some people rent permanent moorings. Others prefer freedom. On another channel, a young couple from London said that they moved their boat every 2 to 3 weeks. Im not sure if you can do this for free. Narrow boats can be 70 feet long, though they would not be able to travel through every lock. Permanent homes like this are usually a minimum of 50 feet, but for leisure use, they are only 30 to 40 feet long. I once taught a girl who had never lived in a house. Her parents moved their boat around the country whenever they got a new job.
