If you ever want to know how culturally important rugby is in wales, there's a documentary called "we beat the all blacks", it's about an hour long though. One town against a country, that'll give you the truest reflection of life in Wales that you'll probably ever see. Happened in the 70's and we still go on about it!

I’d bet on the Welsh to outsing anyone but their national anthem comes from so deep within, is so emotional, and in such an ancient and beautiful language, that I choke up whenever I hear it. If you can go to the rugby in Wales, go for this. The All Blacks have the haka but the Welsh have this. I’m not Welsh but I’m so proud to share an island with them.

Being an Australian of Welsh and English Heritage i can understand the power of the Welsh voice in unison is like a 12th (football) or 16th (rugby) man. Unfortunately because the issue of a seperate English National Anthem has not been settled we have to adopt God Save the Queen. I would be in favour of dropping it in favour of Jerusalem or Land of Hope and glory. Its still better than the Australian National Anthem Advance Australia Fair is one of the blandest national anthems anyone could use. In the nearly 40 years since it became the official National Anthem (some people still dont know the words) its hardly a tune that lights the fires of passion in an athletes belly.

"Welsh" isn't an accent its a distinct old language that is one of the two official languages in Wales with English being the other. Scotland is also bi-lingual with Gaelic and English. The Welsh Dragon (and flag) is from one of the Tudor battles standards. Not pirates but really the originators and best users of the famous longbow.

The origins of the draig goch is actually much, much older than this, going back to the Roman occupation of Britain and used after they left by the Welsh

That's true about the longbow. And the 'V' sign. Also, I believe there's some veracity in claims that the Welsh Dragon flag had its origins in the battle standards of the Sarmation cavalry who allegedly, supposedly, fought for the Romans in Britannia and may or may not be the origin of the legend of Arthur and Knights of the Holy Grail.
@vaudevillian7
@vaudevillian7 3 жыл бұрын
@@cezjon1 yes arguably it’s from the draco, and the Welsh have the closest historical ties to the Romano-British, explicitly at least (but the dragon in heraldry isn’t unique to Wales in the British isles) but the Welsh flag as it is - is the Tudor standard in appearance, after all Glyndwr’s was completely different

Playing any team away always leaves you at a disadvantage, but when you play Wales in Cardiff, the Welsh capital, your not just playing against the 15 men in Red on the pitch, you are also playing against the 75,000 Welsh fans in the stadium and the 3 million Welsh fan in their homes, and if you lucky to play Wales in your home stadium, then the fans come anyway

Welsh archers were employed as mercenaries in the medieval era. They fought the French at Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt. They put up two fingers to the French as a rather rude gesture to show them they still had their shooting fingers.

i was born in england, but through my mum and her family we consider ourself welsh, and my nain has taught me a smattering of the language, and not to be biased, but we have the best anthem. we played it at my taid's funeral (we couldn't sing because of covid). also the red dragon symbol comes from an old welsh legend about a red and white dragoon doing endless battle, with the red dragon representing the welsh, and the white dragon representing the anglo saxons. look up Y Ddraig Goch to find out more

The number of players in the video (from more than 8 years ago) who are now coaches (Adam Jones, the big hairy crying guy, being another example) or TV pundits (James Hook, Sam Warburton, Jamie Roberts etc were all in the squad that day) now is pretty high.

Wales is known as "The Land of Song" and is famed for its choirs. We are very proud of our heritage, culture and language and the fervent sunging of Hen llad fy nyddau reflects this. Nothing to do with pirates! We Welsh are descended from the original Britons, unlike the English who, as the largest nation in the United Kingdom, are pretty dismissive of us.
