Fun fact our anthem "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau" was the first national anthem to ever be sung at the start of a sporting event , In 1905, the Welsh national rugby team hosted New Zealand's first touring team, who started every match performing a haka. As a response, Wales player Teddy Morgan led the crowd singing the anthem , since then it's now common around the world for anthems to be sung at the start of sporting events.

Im i right to say that land of my fathers is the unofficial national anthem meaning that it is in every way except "on paper" so to speak...god bless the prince of Wales being the official one? Or did I get that wrong? Edit: apparently i was wrong...didn't mean to offend I love this song and it really gives me chills🙈

@@marinusvanderlaan7906 god Bless the Prince of Wales is a song written to mark the occasion of the marriage of the future english King Edward VII to Alexandra of Denmark, many welsh people dont sing that song or even know of it and class land of my fathers as our main national anthem, not a lot of welsh people like the royal family and hate the prince of wales title that's currently with william and kate, many see it as a symbol of colonialism, the last true native prince of Wales was llewellyn , he was ambushed at orewin bridge in 1282 it was supposed to be a peaceful meeting , he got separated from his men killed his head cut off and sent to London with an ivy crown on it and paraded through the streets , English king then annexed wales in 1284 , wales was the first ever nation that England conquered and it started the british empire , the english king then named his son the new prince of wales after conquering to mock the welsh a tradition that's now with william and kate , so no we don't sing god save the prince of wales.

@@marinusvanderlaan7906you’ve got that very wrong, I’m afraid. Welsh-Cymru explains it perfectly, but I’ll add that the vast majority of Welsh people have never heard of the song you refer to, much less sung it; in fact, the closest you’re likely to get to those words are ‘F*ck the prince of Wales’. The false title has nothing to do with us, has no standing here, and simply is not wanted.

2nd fun fact regarding the Welsh National Anthem and sporting events: The first time that "Hen wlad fy nhadau" was played at a [Football / Soccer] World Cup was in Qatar 2022. Albeit Wales last reached the [Football / Soccer] World cup in 1958 - due to a mix up / cultural misunderstanding [and much confusion from the players and fans watching] - they played 'God save the queen' [not our national anthem].
@Chadders87
@Chadders87 Жыл бұрын
@@ComeRee not entirely true, Qatar 2022 was the first time it was sung at a world cup, but the Football Association of Wales (like all British football nations sang God Save The King/Queen until 1975, that is why in Sweden 1958 it was sung instead of Land of my Fathers, it wasn't a mix up at all. Scotland also eventually changed from singing it leaving just England and Northern Ireland to sing it today.

Wales is not known as the Nation of Song for nothing. My Welsh ancestors loved singing. Music and song was a vital part of family life, faith, and work. Singing is a part of every aspect of Welsh life. Music is in the DNA of the Welsh soul.

That's what makes our anthem special, it's not about a person. It's not about a royal family like England. Our anthem is about the land, it's about the people, it's about every single Welsh person. And every Welsh person who hears that anthem is filled with pride and appreciation of our special, beautiful land. It's not an anthem it's pure spirit.

I've had the pleasure, as a Welsh supporter based in England, of being in the stadium for the National Anthem and it's unbelievable. Your whole body feels the vibration, the atmosphere drills into your soul. Imagine being an opponent hearing that before a game. Also during the game the crowd will sing hymns (and arias, a little in joke for the supporters) even the building shakes. It's an amazing amphitheatre where at times you hear individual voices often making comical observations then almost spontaneously a song will start. The voices of Angels, even I sound good in there😂

I too, am Welsh & live in South Australia. I remember about 23 years ago, the Treorchy Male Voice Choir came to Adelaide from Wales & sang at the Adelaide Festival Theatre. My wife, at the time (who is Australian) & I went. At the beginning of the program, everyone was standing up & sang the Australian National Anthem...sounded good, but at the end of the program, we were all up standing for the Welsh National Anthem. The atmosphere in the entire Festival Theatre, was so electrifying, it felt as though, it could lift the roof off. Mind you, throughout the entire program, I was singing along, so were most of the audience. My wife kept nudging me & telling me to shut up & listen. When I stopped, the guy sitting next to me, was nudging me & encouraging me to keep singing along. The best part was, when we got out into the foyer, the guy introduced himself to me & asked me, what Choir, was I in? I replied none, why? He said, "you have a great voice, here's the location & date of the next practice session for the Choir I'm in, love you to join". The look on my Wife's face, was priceless, to say the least.😅 Since then, I've been a member of a few Choirs & have conducted, a few times. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but the line of red you can see in the background is the men of The London Welsh Male Voice Choir who led the singing. I am proud to say that I was a member of that choir for 16 years and that day was one of the best. This performance from 2013 is widely regarded as the best rendering of the anthem - it is all over KZbin. Rarely, in a big stadium, do you get the entire crowd, choir and players pretty much in sync, and this added to the effect and impact.

We have another 'anthem' - Yma O'Hyd: it was written by Dafydd Iwan, who went to prison for fighting for the Welsh language...decades later, every child in Wales was singing his song for the World Cup in Qatar. Starts with a mention of the Romans leaving Britain, and is about us still existing as a nation all these centuries later kzbin.info/www/bejne/m56zmYuarM2Epac

The Welsh Anthem, when sung in a packed out Principality Stadium with the roof closed is about as special as an anthem can get. I'd also recommend watching Ireland's anthems vs England at Croke Park in 2007, because the history behind it made it so much more impactful. Back in 1920, during the Irish War of Independence, English Soldiers stormed Croke Park during a Gaelic Football match and opened fire on the crowd. 14 were killed and 60-100 were injured. 87 years later, England were due to play Ireland at Croke Park for the first time since the massacre and everyone was unsure of how the English anthem would be received. Instead of booing or jeering, the Irish crowd remained silent and when their turn came, replied with a thunderous rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann and Ireland's Call. Ireland went on to hammer England 43-13 in a day of real pride

Being a proud Welshman and a patriotic rugby fan, I can honestly say that it's the greatest national anthem in the world! Every time you hear it you will hear the sincerity, the passion, the love for our country in every voice, and if you're in the stadium, it sends goosebumps all over your body! We're such a small country but regularly punch above our weight, and it's spurred on by a powerful hope and togetherness that encapsulates the whole nation, when Wales steps onto the pitch, be it rugby, soccer, whatever, that team knows that they have an entire country behind them that are proud of them regardless of the result. We won 30-3 that day, but regardless of the result, I love rugby for the fans too! Fans of both teams all sit mixed together, enjoying the game and the ups and downs together, and at the end of the match we all shake hands with respect! Soccer is disgusting in comparison. Anyway, I love this beautiful little nation, and you should all come sightseeing here, you will not be disappointed :) Cymru am byth 💖

I did go to Swansea 50 years ago to see my 2nd and third cousins the first time I saw them 70 years ago I was 8 yrs old and went to my great aunts funeral, on both occasions they made me feel as though I belonged, now sadly they have all pasted but hearing and singing the anthem somehow I still feel I belong.

@@paulstarr6316 you're right Paul the connections we have may not always be that clear, over the century's millions of welsh have left these shore's for a better life elsewhere, Australia, Canada and America, look for sheep farms and miners anywhere in the world you'll find welsh men and women, In a few generations they lose the welsh names through marriage or forget where they came from originally, In the middle of south America there are sheep ranches and settlements 150 years or more old and they still speak welsh imagine decedents of those people retuning to Britain with names like Rodrigo, or Evans both claiming to be Argentinian but there true history lost forever. even with DNA we may never really discover the truth but it would be nice if all the pieces fell into place, even if it leads us in a different direction.

There seems to be something moving in many if not all national anthems as sung before international rugby matches, with huge participation by the spectators, especially for the home side. Many of them seem to be a musical reflection of the character of a nation.

There is a tradition in Wales of supporting anyone but England, regardless of who it is. Just for fun of course... During the Euro 2016 football tournament England had a game against Iceland. In the UK there just happens to be a supermarket chain that's also called Iceland. I'll never forget everyone sitting in the pub watching that match wearing Iceland shopping bags as vests. Like any decent bunch of patriotic Welshmen would. 🤣🤣

we are known for our singing. a couple of facts of interest: Wales rugby teem was the first team to ever sing our national anthem before an international match. it was done to reply to the New Zealand's Haka. also, the present Welsh rugby stadium is the favourite for players all over the world. it's has a roof that can be closed. the whole thing is so compact, and the crowd is so near to the action, that the atmosphere is like nowhere else

well technically Land of hope n glory is about Britain as a whole sir esp the empire en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_of_Hope_and_Glory ( thou the artical does metion that English peeps really like it almost as if they missed the point) Being scottish the "unofficial" national anthem is about scotland as a single nation.
