Bar down? For the same reason you wear a seatbelt even though your car has an airbag. Also. Ever notice most of the videos showing people falling off a chairlift are from North America?

I didn’t even know people don’t use the very obvious and lifesaving SAFETY bar. Like… HOW? On the other hand, there are many such little nuggets that make me feel less racist about thinking that Americans are… something else. I don’t think I‘d ever say that out loud though. Irl =/= internet. =D

It's the law to put the bar down in VT. State Trooper can give you a ticket. A Ski Patroller told me about a guy last year at Snowbird falling off the lift and landing in the pow head first. People were laughing but by the time someone helped him out he was dead.

Yup. Also Buckhouse saying it's no big deal to fall of the lift in the US is just stupid. Yeah, you won't die if you fall 20 feet but you are likely to be seriously injured. That's a big deal. Not death, but a broken leg or concussion is a big deal. He might think the likelihood of falling off is low, but that's not the same as saying the consequences of falling off are low.
@IHatePikeys
@IHatePikeys 2 ай бұрын
How about dropping the “cool guy” act and using the footrest. You complain about knee injuries and your boots losing heel hold but you let an extra 7-9 pounds hang off one knee😂…However best part of Europe is self-responsibility. No ski patrol trying to police you. Signs are your responsibility. The food and apres is way better.
@JohnathanBuckhouse
@JohnathanBuckhouse 2 ай бұрын
Definitely has nothing to do with Cool Guy look and everything to do with comfortability. Personally think the leg rest is built for skiers and does not feel great as a snowboarder. I rather hold my board with my loose foot. Knee pain was because of a muscle imbalance that a corrected 🤘🏼

first time i ever went up to the mountains to ski and learned was last year in Österreich when i was visiting my friends there. it was amazing, my friends also work up on the mountain on the skit lift and one of then shes the skit instructor. had such a great time and already by the third day i was already going half way up the mountain, she said in one week she felt i would be good enough to go to the top, shes a great teacher and i learned so fast because of her. it was in st johann in tirol. loved it out there, and i miss it so much, cant wait to go back. they also tought me so much about their culture over the years of knowing them. as a spanish american, learning their food and history and how different the dialect is from the German language was cool. its like a mixture of German and Italian. what i miss the most besides my friends is the food and beers.

Ik believe it is very feasible to go boarding in Europe as an American, especially if you go for like a week. I think the most I've ever paid for a ski pass is like 80$ (3 vallees) but it's usually around $50-$60. From what I've seen in the USA it's more around the $160-$200 mark. For that difference you can usually get a round trip flight.

The max. hight difference bottom to top is 800m in Hemsedal but 1900m in Sölden. And the beer price is 2-3 times that of Austria. And in terms of lifts or area, Sölden is not even a big resort. Look for "Ski Arlberg", for example.

According to the RFID in my pass, I've ridden chairlifts 5000 times in the last 15 years. That extrapolates to 15- 20,000 rides in 50 years of skiing. Not once was I ever in danger of falling off, even back when no chairs had safety bars - of course, you were a lot more cognizant of hanging onto the chair back in those days. HOWEVER, there were a couple of times the chair broke down just after loading, or just before unloading. With the lift attendant's "permission" (which they specifically said they would deny if anyone got hurt), we were given the option to jump off because we were within 6-8' of the ground, and the snow was deep and soft. Nevertheless, that's a lot higher than most people realize. I can't imagine surviving, unscathed, an uncontrolled fall from that, or any greater, height. Gravity is a cruel mistress. Use the bar and keep one hand on the chair.

Europe doesn't know the in or out of boundary system. If you want to go freeridiing, you're supposed to know how to reduce the safety risk and have all the avalanche gear with you. Every year some freeriders/ski tourers get killed due to avalanches. With regards to where the best powder is... depends on the snowfall :) Can be west in France, center in Switzerland or east in Austria. Or south in Italy. And even in a country it can change a lot of course.
@daswamiboy2377
@daswamiboy2377 Ай бұрын
yes absolutely :) provided i done some avalanche safety course jus not sure where would be best to go, just wondered if its like the US where the west is known for better powder than the east coast or something@@kaasgaafnl

So glad you did Solden. Went first time this year to learn to snowboard from the UK. So good for beginners. Loads of blue runs all,over the mountain. Wide pistes that allow you to take the easy route or test yourself with steeper sections. I even managed to get to the top of the mountain and take the blue long run down as far as it was blue - so not right down to the bottom. The views , although you didn’t see them from the top are great. Pity you didn’t eat on the long run down. The food at the stops on that run are the best on the mountain. Real Austrian carb loaded fry ups. 🏂

I don’t understand why it’s such a big deal… do you guys think that keeping the bar up will make you look tough or something? It takes 2 seconds to bring bar up or down and it can potentially save your life, and even if it doesn’t save your life, it’s not hindering it, I must say I never understood the big deal about bringing the bar down. Maybe when you are 15, you wanna look cool and catch the girls, but beyond that… not sure 🙄

In all my years skiing in Europe, I don’t think the bar has ever been up. Everyone puts it down as first thing they do when they get on the lift. The equivalent of skiing/boarding without your helmet on it’s just not gravy, why risk it? Would much rather get to the top and have some fun days skiing and boarding!

It is for most lifts not even an option to let the bar up. The more modern lifts checking of there is somebody on the seats, and if true, than the bar must down. If people on the seat and bar up results in a full stop of the lift. I never understand why this is a big thing in the USA. Even in the older lifts the bare is always lowered for safety. But when I watch YT, it looks like it is special to have the bar down in the US

If you case an accident under the influence of Alcohol: you can be sued . Routes have colors from Blue (easy) to green,red and black (very steep) .

I like to think I'm not a huge wuss, when I'm on the chair with bar up guys I try and forget about it. But I can only make it to the first big gap, I just can't. It's got to be the dumbest way to be extreme on the mountain when the bar is right there, and its got foot rests, and a really sweet railing to stop you from falling to your death for absolutely no reason. Chair lifts aren't like recliner chairs either it would not be hard to slide out or like panic react to dropping a phone or wallet, or even a glove. Now you never walk again instead of just leaning against a railing. It's a little bit like riding a motorcycle instead of a minivan, but at least motorcycles are cool. I just don't get the risk.
