Why did I hate hearing "Your Chinese is Amazing"? I went to Yokohama Chinatown and explained why I used to hate people telling me my Chinese is amazing. After you watch this video, you will know why I didn't like it and why I changed after many years of living in China and Japan.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

Thank you all for helping me turn negative feelings into something positive. I hope to do the same for you. Making this channel has helped me get over social anxiety and frustrations living abroad. These past 8 years here, I’ve stayed low key and never knew making a KZbin channel would be so fun. -Anming

I got frustrated in Korea as well. Anytime I spoke even the smallest bit of Korean the main reaction was "wow your Korean is so good!" And at first it's great because you love getting complimented as you're learning but after a while you get tired of hearing it and just want people to treat you as a local. But it's also because they appreciate that you took the time to learn their language while most foreigners dont so I cant get mad either ^^

How do they usually say it in Korean? I never noticed it but my Korean never gets very good. If I know what to listen for I'll listen for it next time I'm there. I try to do daily tasks in Korean but I'm nowhere near conversational, let alone fluent. In China or Japan just "please" or "thank you" is enough to trigger a compliment.

@@andrewdunbar828 This is because there are a lot of immigrants in Europe and it is quite normal for the countries people that this immigrants speak the countries language brokenly. However, if someone says that they have only been in the country for a few months, are only visiting or you can't hear anymore that somenone is a immigrant (Sometimes you see the ID Card of someone and only understand in this moment that he or she is not a native) it will also attract a compliment from the people.

I think people probably get very excited when listening to you and knowing that you took the time to learn their language. People in the US still do that with me all the time, and I've been living here for 4 years and studied English my whole life. I too, was very bothered by that in the past. But then, everytime my husband says a whole phrase in my native language I get super excited too, so I started to feel better about it. I believe that at least 90% of the time people are not trying to offend you, they're just happy! :)

The sentences I can speak the clearest in Mandarin are the ones explaining that my Chinese isn't very good and the reasons why that is the case. The problem is I speak those sentences so fluently now that the listener assumes I'm being modest so they continue on at native-pace.

Do not take it badly when you get that reaction. I take it as a huge compliment when people say my English is so good. My mother tongue is Spanish but I went to a full-time English private school. I was able to learn English like an English native speaker. Actually one time on a layover in the U.S. a CBP officer was incredibly intrigued by my lack of "Spanish accent". He thought I was illegally living in the U.S. and completely breaching my tourist visa. Asking a LOT of questions and being incredibly suspicious. Then I told him how I learned English, we both had a good laugh and he said "good job" while stamping my passport and letting me do my layover :)

There are many Westerners speaking Mandarin on KZbin channel, some of them are engaging and some are not. I keep watching your clips and subscribed to your channel as I find you a very affable lady that I can relate to. To be honest, some of your contents are not strong, eg going around talking to people you met, but I find them interesting, may be it’s your way of engaging with people. I also find you looking a typical Western lady, but inside very much has an oriental soul.

Well, my videos are more of a vlog about living over in China and Japan. Some of the other Chinese speaking KZbinrs are going slap-stick humor. That's their style and I have my own.

What is so wonderful to hear from the Chinese people you meet is not only that they think your Chinese is amazing, but that many of them notice immediately that you speak with a certain Chinese dialect. I have heard many foreigners who speak Turkish quite fluently but they always have the accent of their origin, which i guess is very normal or easy to do. You obviously have a good ear or can adapt with more ease than others, this obviously has a lot to do with your ability and level of speaking the Chinese language, which is obviously very good.

I was quite surprised that they were able to identify where I studied in China. I thought my Chinese became quite bland after leaving Harbin, but apparently the accent is still there.

It happens everywhere to many people. I (a Chinese) have lived in the USA and Canada more than 20 years. One time when I visited a store in New York state, the store staff said to me "Your English is very good." I had exactly same feeling as you. My son was born and grew up in Michigan, one day a local Michigan guy greeted him in Chinese "你好!". He told me he even felt offended. I agree with you that people want to fit in. This kind of situation rarely happens in immigrant cities such as Toronto where people won't praise your English no matter how good your English is. I think the situation you're experiencing will be getting better as more and more foreigners are living in China and even their children were born there. BTW, Many foreigners' Chinese are still not at a workable level even they have been living in China for many years. Your Chinese is REALLY REALLY good!. LOL
