American Standard Flush Valve Gasket

It's been a while since I replaced this American Standard Flush Valve Gasket! Truth be told there are not too many of these around any longer. But these sisters are long-time customers who inherited the home from their parents and have lived here for almost 90 years.
It's a vintage "Regency Blue" American Standard bathroom that was done over in the 1960s and they don't want to replace it. Especially cause "Regency Blue" is no longer a color option...LOL! Anyway, I found a repair kit and headed over to hopefully get this vintage bad boy to stop passing water through the flush valve.

Thanks for doing this vid. I bought a house built in 1960, and a basement toilet has that Rube Goldberg mechanism. I had thought I’d have to replace the entire toilet. Now, I’ll attempt the DIY fix now seeing what is involved in the lower washer replacement. Might still replace the toilet even if the fix works!

Great video. On a similar note, is it advisable to not use the in-tank toilet cleaning tablets as they contain chlorine that can damage the gaskets?

So helpful!!! Great video!! Have the same toilet. Waiting for my gasket but also noticed at the very bottom beneath the valve, the black ptty or sealent is deterioratingand causing black sooty water. Should that putty or whatever it is be replaced or easy to replace? Thank you so much!!!🙏

That goes thru the tank and is a project to deal with. If you have no leaks best not to touch it. After you install the new gasket be sure to take some scotch brite pad or sand paper and gently buff the surface of the flush valve to ensure a good seal. If it's really in bad shape you might have to replace the flush valve, but take it one step at a time.

How do you remove the metal stop? There’s a rubber piece on top of it that says turn counter clockwise, but it won’t budge at all.

They get fused on some times and refuse to come off. I've snapped them off and then had to replace the entire flush valve. (EXPENSIVE!) If you can remove the rubber boot, spray it down with some rust buster, WD-40 or some equivalent and let it soak for 24/48 hours then go in and try to remove it counterclockwise.

Thanks. I tried WD-40 and let it sit overnight, but it still wouldn’t move. I ended up using a dremel to cut it off. I installed the new gasket, cleaned up the bottom a little with an abrasive, but it’s still leaking.

I am a DIY'r, I have replaced a few of these over the years.. I don't recall having to wait for a good seal over a period of a few days let alone a few flushes ? What did I do right ? Or wrong??

In the late 60’s early 70’s you could still get O.E.M. Replacement parts. Soft and supple rubber unlike the aftermarket replacement parts available today. Takes a while for the rubber to settle in (assuming the flush valve seat is sound).
