Just a heads up about Bakel's. They're an industrial baking mix company and are responsible in no small part for the death of traditional bakeries in smaller towns all over New Zealand. Bakers who bake from scratch often can't compete on price. As the sponsor of the NZ pie contest, applicants need to list their ingredients so Bakels knows ahead of time if you're using their ingredients in your entry. I don't know if first hand corruption but there certainly is a conflict of interest and it would be interesting to know how often scratch bakers pies win the contest. I know scratch bakers personally who don't even bother entering.

Thats unfortunate. As a expat living in Australia who loves a great pie, I can say the standard of bakery pies I try when visiting New Zealand is very high. Harbour street bakery in my home town of Oamaru is a firm favourite.

My fave pie shop in Tauranga is Raymon's Pies, Judea!! It's the pastry I love, and the fillings are yummy. Well priced too! They only have the standard pie flavours, but who needs a gourmet pie when a standard one tastes soooo good.

My man, you finally made it to where I'm living now but on a week day while I'm at work...sheesh Brock I would have loved to have caught up over a pie with ya but clearly was not meant to be. Yip Patricks Pies are certainly a contender out there but it really does depend on the bakery you go to. When you find your favourites that have quality food, you tend to stick with them but that some change you paid for just 4 pies. Glad you enjoyed, that last one sounded yum 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤

The reason New Zealand have the best pies is because that is the absolute pinnacle of their cuisine. Fine dining for them. Pies and sausage rolls. In Australia we have other types of food that isn’t sold at a milk bar or service station. This is why New Zealand has better pies.

I like how they seem to be selling the same actual pies that won the award. In Oz I’ve been caught out visiting bakeries with awards all over the walls. The pies were garbage (gravy and pastry, little meat). I realised that the pies they sell are NOT the pies they enter into the competitions. 😢
