I brought Canadian McDonald’s across the border into the USA to meet my friend who had some American McDonald’s and we did a direct comparison taste test. It was epic.. you won’t believe the differences.
We compared the Big Mac, french fries, American ketchup vs Canadian Ketchup, coke, chicken tenders, BLT, poutine, and more!

This was a crazy journey and took some research to figure it all out! My big question is do any American locations have any of the items that Canada has? Or what does your local McDonald's have that others might not?

i HAVE A THEORY. I think the American food was bigger and had more calories because the states have more competition for fast food. You guys have Shake Shack, Steak and Shake ,Checkers just to name a few, So McDonald's needs to compete with a wider competition base hence higher fat content and bigger items. I think since Canada is the coffee shop capital of the world that they would need menu items to compete in that markets hence bagels, muffins , fancy coffee etc etc

One thing that's always overlooked in the America vs Canada McDonald's videos is the Junior Chicken. In America they use the same type of patty for their McChicken as they do for their Junior Chicken, here in Canada they are 2 different Patty's. Our McChicken is the same as America's but our Junior Chicken is a whole new patty.

@Professor Mike AmericanuckRadio Nuh-Uh. Burger King is failing across (Canada anyways) due to shitty business tactics, poor service and with that - customer dissatisfaction. Kind of like KFC up here - used to be good - now it's a gamble....plus, the franchise owners ( In Calgary anyway - I did a personal taste comparison of eight different locations 'cos I was so mad at KFC one day) seem to have augmented the recipes to suite their budgets or what have you - for example...the potato salad and gravy used to be to die for with regards to fast food taste! I'm comparing how it was in the 80's, 90's, early 00's......now, it's just shit. Chicken too - seems like it's missing half of the required ingredient portions - weak....anyhoo, that's just KFC, I digress. Burger King (two locations in Calgary now, there USED to be more) just seemed like it was destined to fail here. Compared to the 80's. Introduce Jack In The Box here and see what happens! Carl's Jr and Popeye's are struggling, but I think due to service more than anything.

As someone who works for a meat company that produces for the US and Canadian markets, the meats tend to be prepared with different ingredients. The lower calories on the Canadian market, I feel as though it has something to do with Canadian food standards for producers to follow.
@normanicusinvictus7416
@normanicusinvictus7416 4 жыл бұрын
It may have a lot to do with quality offset rules. The US is allowed to offset qualities of meat but Canada can't to meet choice standards. The same grade and cut of meat in the US may be higher in fat, have different marbling, muscling, etc. (Though these standards have a high overlap between carcasses). Things like yellow fat throw them right off the A and into the B-grades in Canada. US doesn't. So thats likely where the difference is. McDonalds can use lower "standard" beef in the US and likely tweak ratios for fat from other cuts. If I were to guess, they'd probably start with rounds and then use sirloin and trim to adjust fat and flavour between batches. Anything else is just spices and salt. Additionally, McDonalds US does import beef from the US, New Zealand, Canada and Australia - So this may help create a more consistent quality beef (Constantly mixing sources for your beef tends to create a generic flavour.) sauce - I used to work as a butcher in Canada and the US, and worked the meat center in a grocery store chain in Canada, in a border town. USDA standards were posted.

It's the same thing with the dairy products. Canadian dairy is more regulated and has less additives and therefore less hormones. It's a bit more pricey compared to American dairy goods, but consider the regulations and of course, like with any other country, the price is geared to the citizens and their own currency/buying power.

McDonald's Canada is a separately owned entity from McDonald's USA. McDonald's Canada are the ones to have opened the first Russian McDonald's as well. A&W Canada is also different from A&W USA. I was at a Michigan A&W and I kept checking for signs familiar to Canadian locations... no antibiotics, no hormones. American A&Ws use regular beef. I ended up leaving without a purchase.

....... you do realize that "McDonald's" the company only owns a very small percentage of the chain? Like 18% of them, the rest are franchised out .... like your McDonald's Canada. So while they do not own the establishments, they get paid for the use of their name. Yes ... even your McDonald's Canada. That applies worldwide, and as such ... your McDonald's Canada couldn't have opened the Russian McDonald's without corporate approval. Also, you neglect to mention the part played by the Moscow City Council, as the first there was a joint venture between them and McDonald's Canada.
@jaykim416
@jaykim416 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Curry Yes of course there is a master franchise agreement between American and Canadian McDonalds. I understand all this, since I used to own a different small food franchise. However, McDonalds USA doesn't have much power over McDonalds Canada. As mentioned, they don't own the Canadian corporation. Meaning, if the American corporation were to somehow cut the cord, they would lose hundreds of millions of dollars in the process. There is no simple process for this. Also, Russia, at the time, would not have allowed McDonalds USA to have entered their market. It was more palatable because it was Canadian. Don't get me wrong, the Russians wanted to eat a Big Mac, they just wanted a make leaf on it. Those are the facts.

They have tried adding items to the menus in the US, but the standard menu usually still gets all the sales as that is what people are used to. They go there knowing what they want, don't really bother with the menu. So sales on new menu items are generally low, so they don't end up staying. Curious, do you guys have the seasonal items, or the limited time stuff? They like to pop out different things here now and then, but usually only for a couple months or so. Kind of seems like trial runs, to see how stuff sells.

I used to work at McDonald's for a decade. In the US we have more sugar in our bread, the seasoning is pre measured but that doesn't stop the grill cook from double seasoning (it's only supposed to be seasoned once) the snack options are actually tested and rolled out by franchise owners on sale/public acception. And also Canada is more expensive so they get the expanded menu 💪💯

New Zealand has a “kiwiburger” at maccas. No it doesn’t have a slice of native bird in it. It does have a slice of beetroot and a fried egg! Plus tomato, lettuce, slice of cheese , onions, tomato sauce and mustard. It’s pretty good! For some reason sliced or cubed cooked beetroot from a can is a classic kiwi salad type addition. Mmmmmmmmmmmm, beetroot.

I've tried McDonald's in over 25 countries (Including North and South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East) I can honestly say that the best I had was in Dubai and Jordan, they pay so much more attention to the ingredients, the meat tastes better, the vegetables are fresh and the fries are ALWAYS hot and crispy
@erikwsince1981

Recommendation from a Canadian: Stay away from McDonald’s poutine. The fries are all wrong for proper poutine. They have to be thick cut rustic fries that aren’t crispy fried. The thickness is important for soaking up the gravy and being able to fork them properly.

@@TimboCanada yea their coffee quality dropped to hell right around the same time that McDonalds started running their new coffee in that campaign where they were giving out free coffee in their parking lots. I remember because prior to that the consensus was McDonald's coffee was hot garbage. There were tons of rumors about how McDonald's bought out Tim Horton's old coffee supplier but Tim's has recently denied this (like almost a decade after the rumors started) so Idk.

@@VietyV Tims was bought out by burger king and they immediately changed the doughnut recipes and started bringing them in frozen instead of baking them in each restaurant. They also changed the coffee to improve the profits. But they've been losing money and have tried to reinvent themselves twice to get back market share. I guess we'll see if the diner theme works or they get smart and change everything back to what it was when they bought the company

@@rosestewart1606 I am always confused when I see the frozen prebaked pastries on supplier catalogues. It makes no sense to me, it takes longer to defrost a frozen precook than to throw a frozen uncooked into the oven. All you end up with is an inferior product that doesn't save on labour.

Marie once again there is North America and South America. Continents. America or American refers to the United States or a citizen of. Just so you know I have traveled the world and everyone knows this. Google is free. If you're able to get on you tube you can Google it or forever stay uniformed. My mother was a Canadian and understood that we were American and she was Canadian. It would be true to say she was a North American as someone from Italy would say that they were European but someone from Denmark would also be European but not Italian. Not rocket science. Once again... Google is your friend
