In Indonesia, we say Mercedes Benz exactly how Christina said. or, in the shortened version we say Mercy. Tapi suka banget sama kak Stefanie, jawabannya cerdas dan selalu menyisipkan pengetahuan tentang Indonesia kepada orang luar. Makasi kak Stefanie sudah mewakili Indonesia ❤

"Hyundai/현대", if written in Hanja is "現代", which pronounced as "xian dai" in Mandarin Chinese. Also "Toyota" in Kanji is "豊田", which pronounced as "feng tian" in Mandarin Chinese. So the Chinese names for brand that using either Chinese origin name or name written in kanji/hanja, will always be the Chinese pronounciation of the kanji/hanja. As for "Volkswagen", the Chinese name is a literal translation, "大众" is shortened name, full name is "大众汽车", in German "volks" means "folks/people", "wagen" means "car/automobile", so "大众汽车" means "people's car". Others were mostly transliteration with Chinese words, however during the process they didn't choose some random word with similar sound, but words must have meaning to fit with the brand's characteristic.

Well... Volkswagen, I think, means vechicle for people. So, Chinese is translating literally
@lemonz17694 сағат бұрын
The Chinese name for Volkswagen is a translation of the original meaning from German of People’s Car. The company probably decided on the translation as China is the biggest single market for VW.

4:11 i think its the most similar with German pronunciation 'be em vee,'. 4:18 imo we got it from dutch, so thats why
@Flo-vn9ty3 сағат бұрын
The differences to the US are actually not that surprising as many of these brands are pronounced 'wrong' in the US as well. When it comes to BMW for example, the Indonesian version is almost spot on.Also the Indonesian version of Volkswagen and Porsche is quite similar to the German pronounciation.

But in german, "W" pronunce as "V"
@kilanspeaks4 сағат бұрын
Right? Though we don’t pronounce the “We” part as “Ve” like in German. 😁 Many people assume that the Indonesian alphabet is the same as Dutch, but there are a few key differences in pronunciation. For instance, the letter W in Dutch is pronounced like “ve,” similar to German, whereas in Indonesian, it’s closer to an English W. Other examples include C, J, G, and others, which also sound quite different in Indonesian compared to Dutch.

I’d pronounce some of these brands a bit differently from how Stefanie pronounced them, but that’s pretty normal since these are foreign brands, and different Indonesians might pronounce them differently. For instance, I’d usually just say “mercy” (pronounced /ˈmɜrsi/) for Mercedes-Benz, but if I were to say the full name, it would sound more like /mɛrsedes ˈbɛns/. As for Lamborghini, I’d go with /lamborɡini/ or just /lambo/ if I’m feeling lazy. That said, I really admire how the Chinese translate foreign brand names. It’s fascinating that they don’t just transliterate but also try to give meaningful translations to the Chinese versions. It adds a creative and cultural touch.
