In rural Sackets Harbor, N.Y., where COVID-19 affected the local volunteer ambulance service's ability to respond to calls, local high school students took the required training and picked up the slack. Correspondent Steve Hartman talked to some of the teenagers who are stepping up to aid their community.

Wonderful story! I have always lived in major metropolitan cities but find myself weekending or vacationing in small rural areas where these positions are voluntary. Wonderful to see these young men and women discovering they were of age and taking the required training. This may even lead to a career as First Responders, Nurses or Doctors! Gratitude for Good Deeds!

It's too bad stories like this can't be on National news every day, instead of all the downer stories we see all the time.

The problem is, stories like this whitewash the problems in this country. Kids save volunteer ambulance sounds much better than entire embulance service dead or quit of covid. Every story of a child bake sale for their cancer ridden teacher covers up that the teacher was abandoned by the insurance companies. Usually, in order for a story to be "feel good", there needs to be a complete failure of the actual system first

This is a heartwarming story but what's NOT being discussed is that 35% of rural EMTs are volunteer and yet the cost of an ambulance in rural areas is just about the same as it is in cities. Insurance profits strike again!

Of course, you are both correct. Yet, these children willingness to participate in resolving a crucial problem in their township, certainly indicates young Citizens with the commitment and courage to address and resolve current and future issues. They have the courage and confidence to address the failures in our Political System and Institutions; which certainly should include your absolutely correct concerns.

I'm ok with people being rich as long as they're willing to pay a fair percentage of taxes and actively promote things like wealth taxes and Medicare for All but I have no idea if she does or not (I kind of doubt it). She should have at least said "different from the 'Average Joe'" or something like that. She doesn't belong in the description of "you and me".

They BARELY took care of the ACTUAL EMT workers. Seriously, let that sink in.. What makes you think these kids will be taken care of? I'm glad they have a great sense of love for thinking of others outside of than themselves; because the adults how have mucked things up that we need children to "pick up the slack".

There was a time in America when kids actually looked forward to becoming adults as soon as possible. Then someone pumped the brakes and started infantilizing them well into their mid-twenties. Hopefully, that tide is turning.
