I've been having a lot of conversations with students regarding contractions/reductions/linking/intonation recently. It's a shame that English classes don't typically cover these topics more. Also, when I was examining IELTS, so many candidates would overuse slang/idioms; glad you addressed that!

I understand and agree... But it's just fun on the other side to use slang terms! There is a kind of poetry to it. 😉 Certainly a good book is a pleasure to read. Even really old books! 🙂🙂 Thanks for sharing 👍

I agree, slang can be SO fun- the real lesson was to use it intentionally based on the context:-) Best wishes!!

"Crib" for "house" or "home"? THat's cool! That's WAY cool! From now on, I'm going to say "crib" so often that people are going to start telling me to stop--but they, too, will be using "crib" themselves without even realizing it. This is going to be fun!

Brilliant points as always. Contractions are tricky cuz (😀) they usually tend to whiz by so quickly. Also, certain contractions are quite common in North American English, but less frequent in British English. 2:25 very very true and I believe it applies to idioms, too. English is notorious for its love of idioms, but I knew this one girl who literally made it a point to include at least one idiom in every sentence and she sounded.... well, very poetic, but certainly not natural. And lol these old MTV shows still influencing people's English worldwide 😂😂😂 To me, "crib" also sounds quite urban... like a cool street slang rich rappers would use... but probably not CEOs and businessmen. I might be wrong tho!

Thanks friend! Right after I filmed this I was watching a KZbin vid about a luxury apartment tour (I know, lol!!), and she, Tatiana James, used the word “crib” - I thought, she’s way more cool than I am😂😂 but yes, I have a similar as you re: when this word is usually used! Really funny re: the idiom girl- idioms are a funny thing! I tend to use more of them being married to a native speaker than I did in earlier years, I think..

Thanks for tips. By far the easiest to use is the second one. I usually extend the first one by reducing the length and number of sentences during the speech. The third one requires many conversations with the mirror so I put it off for the future. (I hope there will be mirrors with artificial intelligence then). All the very best to you!!
@AmericanAccentMastery4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Emil:) Re: intonation, really think of your brain as having a intonation learning algorithm- it will get better and better as you feed it lots of good quality input- i.e. as you deeply focus on intonation, think about it, analyze it, etc. Very similar to the 48 hour exercise you did, but thinking ONLY about intonation, you can make a lot of progress! OR just wait for the AI mirror!! ;)
@emilsander45704 жыл бұрын
Thank you Victoria. Of course, I will follow your instructions because they are the most important for me to learn. I can roughly distinguish the correct American accent or intonation and I know what the sentence should sound like, while listening. I can pronounce most individual words or very short sentences correctly. However, when I try to say something longer, especially read aloud, it sounds terrible. I think that "muscle memory" is needed to improve it.
