I had the absolute pleasure of driving this road alone in my new Chrysler 300, just a few months after my wife of 44 years had passed away. I drove from Torrey to US 89, still a great journey and somehow, a journey of healing.

I am sorry to hear about your wife. But, I am glad that you got to experience this special highway. How are you doing now, Sir? Wishing you a fast and steady healing.

After seeing your videos, I made sure to include UT12 and Capitol Reef National Park on the final day of our retirement vacation. We drove to Escalante from Bryce Canyon, spent the night at the Cowboy Country Inn, and continued to Capitol Reef the next day. WOW! What an experience. The Hogback was incredible. Thanks for posting the videos.

As a motorcycle rider who has looked for the most squiggly and twisty roads across the country so I could go ride those roads...and I have ridden the MOST awesome roads across this great nation of ours...but my favorite ALL TIME road, one that has it ALL, everything I want in a road: great scenery and vistas, challenging twisties, and NOT a lot of traffic.... This road, Utah's Hwy 12, is #1, and my all time favorite! I have a lot of favorite roads in my top 10, and those vary, and change position as time goes by, but since 1987, when I first rode Utah Hwy 12, it has been my #1 favorite road, bar none! I like riding it from Bryce, north, the entire length of it, or heading east towards Capitol Reef NP on Hwy 24....when I get to it, but no matter which way you go, it will absolutely blow your mind at the Majesty of God's Creation! You don't even need to be on acid to have a life changing experience, to see life anew...(not that I would know anything about that, but I've read stories....) Just ride Utah's Hwy 12, and you'll never see things the same, again! I recommend, when you get to the top of Hwy 12, stop, and look east towards the Grand Staircase and the Escalante N.M., that is worth the ride right there, though no matter where you stop, and turn to look, you'll be AMAZED!! Truly, amazed! THANK YOU for this awesome video, the whole series of them! May God bless you and yours!

I've lived in SLC. Utah all my life. I have taken several trips throughout my life to So. Utah. There was one trip in particular that stood out for me. I went by myself on a trip to Escalante. I took highway 12 from Torrey to Escalante. The part where you are heading south over Hogs Back overlook is breathtaking. I reached that point at sunset. The entire landscape lit up with brilliant hues of orange, red and yellow. It moved me so much I had to pull over. I didn't take any pictures just stood there taking it all in. Admiring the creators great masterpiece.

Firestepher G I envy you! That must have been a spectacular experience! I remember feeling so excited to see and stop at the Hogback for the first time. So imagine how disappointed I was when I realized I had accidentally passed it... I definitely will not miss it again next time!

Just drove through Utah on Friday and Saturday morning along I-70 and I-15. That whole southern part of the state is just full of the strangest and most serene landscapes I've ever seen. Your videos were the reason why I wanted to explore the national parks, but sadly, I ran out of time to do some exploration. Oh well, I'll continue to watch your videos in the mean time. Very well done video; big thumbs up!

FreewayBrent Glad you enjoyed the ride! Did you get a chance to get out of I-15 at all? How far out did you manage to go? One definitely needs plenty of time for the exploration. There is SO MUCH to see. You can spend days exploring this one highway alone.

Don't get in a hurry - if it is worth filming then it is worth doing it right instead of rushing on to make another one. Narration is better than words on the screen.

I just love your road trips. They help me decide where I want to go myself. I live in Northern Utah..Clearfield area and there is still much I haven't seen here in my own state yet. I pick a new destination every year, save the money, rent a car and take off! We do have some beautiful country here in our little state!

I drove that route a couple of summers ago, and even camped out at the Calf Creek Campground you passed at 5:50 on the video. Made the two-and-a-half mile hike up the creek to Lower Calf Creek Falls. It is SPECTACULAR! Google it for pictures. Also, glad to see you got the correction about the Escalante River. You crossed the river at the bridge at the trailhead, however, the river makes a right turn as it is joined by Calf Creek and the road turns left and heads up Calf Creek Canyon. BTW, what did you think about that drive along the Hogback? Isn't that something! Too bad you missed the best viewpoint!

This is an absolutly amazing road in an outstanding area. I spent some time there last September hiking through the canyons on the Boulder Mail Trail into Death Hollow. Totally amazing trip. A real adventure. The Hole-in-the-rock road is another great playground nearby. Scenic byway 12 is the best! It's definitely one of the most beautiful roads I've ever seen I hope I can do this again when this pandemic stuff is hopefully over soon. Btw. @4:45 it's not the Escalante river, it's the calf creek which flows into the Escalante river ;-) Thx for bringing me back tp my vacations from last year. Best regards from Germany

Approaching the Hogback the video does not serve the jitters around those bends , the edge drops off 8:00 min. This video brought the trip back to life headed the same direction to the Burr Trail entrance right there at 12:40 on the bend . And years later I read Yelpthat this is a great Beer and Burger stop . Wish I known that then, I would have stopped.
@AmericanRoads7 жыл бұрын
The camera definitely does NOT do the Hogback justice! It was stunning! And that Beer and Burger sounds like a very refreshing pitstop 😀

The image is so clear. How did you achieve such clarity through your windshield and not pick up glare? Also, how did you achieve such image stabilization with the camera while the car is moving?
@AmericanRoads4 жыл бұрын
Here is the photo of my setup: 1drv.ms/u/s!ArEGryMIni-rnJcb2OSqPOc6CP1BOA 1. A smooth black fabric covering the entire dashboard. I used a black curtain from Walmart. This prevents the dash from reflecting and creating unwanted glare on the windshield. I also clean the windshield as needed along the journey. 2. For the camera, I mounted it in a tripod and secured the tripod with a bungee cord. The Sony camera itself has an excellent image stabilization.

Road is beautiful. But driving is looking so dangerous in these types of roads. Even in during watching the video we are feeling the scariness.
