Now it’s time to learn about some history in London! Today we are visiting the British Museum… because one must do this when in London! There are artifacts that the British have collected from all over the world, butt he most interesting are probably from Egypt… real mummies.
The we make the walk to Westminster Abbey before they close for the day. We made it in time to spend over an hour exploring the almost 1000 years of history!

Hi guys, loving your London videos so far. Obviously this video was taken before the Queen sadly passed away. Just a quick note to say when the Union Jack 🇬🇧 is flying above Buckingham Palace (or previously when no flag was present) it denotes that the monarch is not in residence. Only the Royal Standard (which is now draped over the Queen's coffin) denotes that the monarch is in residence. It only flies when the monarch is at his or her official residence, and is never lowered to half mast. In summer, from July until September, the Queen is never in London and has always spent her holiday at Balmoral every year. This was where she sadly passed away last week. That delicious Scotch egg is a classic British dish, often eaten cold on picnics with the humble Melton Mowbray pork pie. It's a whole egg wrapped in pork sausagemeat then layered in breadcrumbs and cooked to a golden crisp. Go to Fortnum and Mason's food hall on Piccadilly, in the basement they have the most delectable Scotch eggs and pork pies and other amazing food. F&M have been serving the British public for over 300 years and currently supply the Royal household.

If you're in London on a Sunday and want to see Westminster Abbey without paying the £25 then go to a church service. Even if you normally aren't a church goer at home it will be a cultural and uplifting experience. Plus there will be a few things that you're never going to see at church in America. I'll leave that for y'all to find out.

Westminster Abbey’s been around since the 960s. It had an up-do in the 13th century. The cloisters can be hired out and it is weird to be eating canapés and drinking sparkling wine over the tombs but on a hot summer’s day, it’s very nice. The British Museum also hires out those Egyptian rooms for business gatherings to major donors / companies. Now, that is weird having dainty sandwiches and a wine with the mummies so close.

Loving your post about my home city. Obviously this was filmed way before the queens passing. Someone explained about the flag over Buckingham Palace and what a Scotch Egg is but there are many fares to try not just fish n chips. The streets are hard going and extremely hard if you try to fit so much in one day. But I’m loving that you’ve taken to my city. Wanted to say, on Saturday night/ Sunday morning I queued 12 hours to see our late queen lying in state, my feet and legs can testify for it but what an experience that I’ll never do again or be part of U.K. history. Westminster Abbey and Westminster Palace including Houses of Parliament and Big Ben which is actually a bell in the Elizabeth Tower are world heritage sites. The hall Queen Elizabeth lay in state was Westminster Hall the oldest complex to Westminster Palaces. We’ve just said our last goodbyes to our gracious Queen very emotional day here in the U.K. but very proud of having a queen on throne for 70+ years and the Pomp and Ceremony was just awe inspiring which no other country could even come near.

Walking about London to see everything in one or two days is too tiring. Next time, stay longer and use public transportation, bus and tube - if there is no strike. After a ride on a double-deck bus, and the Tube, at least once take a ride in a black cab, just so that you can say, "been there, done that." Also, attend an evensong, Westminster, St. Paul, or both. To see replicas (plaster casting) of art, go to the V&A (I think room 46).

I suppose you could say a lot of it was sold - to the British Museum or to collectors then gifted to the museum. The issue is perhaps more whether the sellers all over the planet originally had any right to sell their precious national historical artifacts. Much of the rest was just grabbed as 'spoils of empire'. Whilst I greatly appeciate the British Museum for curating, preserving and beautifully displaying these priceless historical items, I have mixed feelings about some of the contents - the Parthenon marbles especially, which I do feel should be returned to Greece.

I'm in two minds about it. On one hand, they ARE stolen artefacts that probably should be back in the hands of the cultures that made them. On the other hand, it's good that they're all in one place, and in one of the most popular tourist cities in the world, so the maximum amount of people have a chance to see them.

If you had gone upstairs at Westminster Abbey you would have seen the Magna Carta, probably the most expensive document sold if it was to be sold, but its valuation will be priceless, the outer part of a scotch egg is made of sausage meat, the flag flying outside buck house would depend on what flag was flying for the monarchy to be in residence... if the union flag then no, but the royal standard then yes

I think we were there at the exact same time as you! We were in London from August 10-17. We went to Harry Potter & The Cursed Child too. We had the London Pass, which included admission to Westminster Abbey, many other attractions, plus Oyster cards. My videos haven't gone up yet because we had a cruise and a trip to WDW earlier in the summer, and we went to Paris and Switzerland before we got to London! Too much travel content is a good problem to have :)

if you ever have to ask yourself "I wonder if this is the original, in the UK, or if the original is still where it's supposed to be?" the answer is that we usually have the original in the UK. We famously just took things or bought things and shipped them to London. If memory serves me right, most of the parthenon sculptures (usually called the Elgin Marbles, after the chap who stol...legally transferred them from Greece) are original. Greece has asked for them back, and the museum has said they were legally brought to the UK and are best stored in the british museum. Some of the original statues are still in Greece, and they have a small museum there to display those.

The Elgin marbles were legitimately purchased from the Greek authorities and shipped to the UK with their blessing, but after decades of later Greek governments complaining they were stolen this seems to have been accepted as fact, but it is not true.

Your account is also not true. Elgin purchased the marbles from the occupying turks, not the greek authorities. This just adds to the problem of course.

@@theotherstevesteve Try telling the Greeks that the occupying turks were the 'legitimate government'. Elgin purchased the marbles agreed, however they were purchased at a time of war in Greece & he paid the money to the enemy of Greece at the time. Let us say Elgin took advantage of the situation. Although he probably did rescue them from destruction.

You could spend a week in the museum and still not see it all. Buckingham Palace is regarded as the Monarch's Office, they do have a small flat, but Windsor is regarded as 'home'. Wellington Arch by Hyde Park was rebuilt on the site of 'Tyburn Trees' which was the site for public executions, the law was changed and executions were then carried out in prisons, also around this time the Duke of Wellington (Sir Arthur Wellesley) died and Parliament decided to move the arch and completely remove the heavily contaminated soil of the execution site.

There's no a/c because that would change the Relative Humidity and Temperature within the building which could damage the exhibits. The area where you were complaining about the lack of a/c is a replica of George III (I believe) library. It contains a lot of books and material. This is just the place that you don't want a/c in as it introduces moist air. If you get above 70% humidity you are likely to get mould growing. With all the visitors coming they introduce a lot of moisture.
