FATHER TED IS THE DOGS BOLLOCKS!!! One of the best comedy's ever, it's got everything, tea, swearing, daft humour and best of all Father Jack! Everyone assumed Catholic priests would take offence, but they loved it! I can watch this over and over, it still doesn't get old. So sad that Dermot (Ted) passed away suddenly just after they filmed the 3rd series. 😢

I'm so glad you guys are reacting to this. Much of Irish society is lampooned in it, a prime example in this episode is the characters John and Mary who you saw almost stabbing each other at the "fair". For a very long time in Ireland there was no divorce, and it was very much looked down on in Ireland, with the Church leading the way in wanting to keep people together no matter what. And so many couples who grew to absolutely hate each other were just stuck with each other. But when the local priest showed up, as he often did calling to his parishioners houses, they'd be all sweetness and light, because they want to portray a picture of domestic bliss. So many times in this show you're going to see this couple at each other's throats - until Ted or Dougal show up. Then they're all lovey dovey. Can't wait to see your other reactions!
@AdrianColley9 ай бұрын
Before Ireland legalized divorce, there was still judicial separation. So you didn't have to stay with an abusive spouse, but you couldn't remarry. Of course, a lot of couples stayed together for the sake of appearances. John & Mary are a quite dark joke about domestic violence and keeping up appearances.

It may sound strange but that pilot is one of the weaker ones. It gets really funny and very surreal. There's not too many episodes of it. The creator always ends his shows after 3-4 seasons before it gets tired and trying, but they really didn't have a choice with this show because the actor who plays Ted died shortly after making season 3. But I think there's only a total of 18 episodes and one Xmas Special. Easy enough to get through in a day.

IIRC, the premise of the show was basically to take the key characteristics of a Catholic priest - and then create characters based on the exact opposite. When I first started watching I had a Catholic friend who told me that the clergy absolutely loved the show. Not because they tolerated the mockery, but rather because they related to so much of the characters in it. Regardless, it's great writing and amazing character refinement. I hope you react to more! 😂😂 Oh; and great that you reacted to a complete episode. Without seeing the build up of the characters, _so_ much is missed in this series. Good call for that.

Father Ted episode reactions don't get copyright flagged. They are all up on KZbin anyway. Either posted by the company who made them, the network that showed them, and the countless people sharing them. Used to be [prime viewing in the UK during the 90's (especially if you didn't have satelite TV yet)........ Friday nights on Channel4: Father Ted (9:30pm) > Friends > Frasier > King of the Hill > South Park > re-run of TFI Friday from 6pm (currently can't get "King of the Hill" in the UK any more apart from what I got from the first 5-seasons on iTunes until they pulled the rest of it just when I was ready to start buying more episodes). It used to be a good channel back then..... it had a lot of US based stuff like "Sesame Street" around lunchtime... and also had the US "Dennis the Menace" (aka "Dennis Mitchell", not to be confused with the UK "Dennis the Menace" from "The Beano" comic) around 11:30am Saturday mornings and a repeat stupid early on Sunday mornings (about 7:30am), which mean't I usually missed it. It also ran "The Cosby Show" + "Home Improvement". Now it seems to be more interested in pumping out socialist TV news + making documentaries about pubes.

I heard, many years ago, that a lot of Catholic priests stated that it is realistic to their way!
@Varksterable Жыл бұрын
Yup, I've heard similar. The priests are each based on the opposite of a trait priests are supposed to have. And yet the real clergy relate to them so much, rather than just seeing the irony/mockery. It's such clever, human, intelligent script writing. Definitely up there with Blackadder and even (possibly) Yes (Prime)minister.
@jethro1963 Жыл бұрын
Many people have fallen for the myth that the show is anti Catholic. It wasn't. One of the show's two writers Arthur Mathews' uncle was a priest. He grew up around these types of characters, he knew them. Part of the premise was three guys living on an island who just happen to be priests. Most people are so hung up on being anti religious that they don't get it. Graham Linehan, Arthur Mathews and the guys from South Park get it.
@MelanieMaguire Жыл бұрын
Father Ted is hilarious. The backstory is that Craggy Island is where the Catholic Church puts problem priests that are completely useless. Father Dougal Maguire is a bit simple. Well, more than a bit. Father Jack is an alcoholic disgrace and Father Ted is barely competent but was caught embezzling church funds at his last place. It's absurdist and takes these caricatures to farcical extremes. Enormously popular with everyone, Irish or not, Catholic or not.
