That music does thrive in that part of the hemisphere. Reggae is absolutely huge in the British Isles, has been ever since the 70s. Ska too is huge over here. Reggae is acctualy bigger in Britain than in America and this is due to the wind rush in the 1960s where Britain had a worker shortage due to ww2. They called on our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean to help and they eagerly flocked over to Britain. Most of Bob Marley albums were recorded in Britain.

Okay, interesting story... I was taking a philosophy course and the professor mentioned that he had in the seminary to become a priest but dropped out last minute. I lent him a home made vhs of episodes I had taped off the BBC of Father Ted. He watched the Lent episode. We had a chat about it and he remarked that a lot of older priests fall into alcoholism and addiction because of despair. Losing their belief in god and also missing the connection they felt to god and the church as a whole, from their youth. An existential and religious crisis at once. The drunken older preist is a trope because it's true.
