The issue with many of these 'big hits' rugby videos is that they don't make clear which tackles are illegal and why, which is important to know when your learning about the sport.
@clymtc

yes, a lot of these tackles would be penalised now and the "tackler" would be off the pitch for 10 minutes - if not for the rest of the game.

Came to the comments hoping to see this at the top. Yea it's rough and actually players do have a touch of padding built into the jerseys for collarbone etc... but it's SOOO important to highlight that most of these are illegal or at least have since affected changes in the rules to reduce/discourage.

@@RNTV In the older days you used to get away with a lot more but in more recent years there's been players suing orgs for not protecting them. You're not allowed to pick someone up and spear them into the ground, past horizontal anyway. You must attempt to wrap your arms too, you can't just stick your shoulder into someone's chest. But, you still see it and they're picked up more now.

I watch the NFL and not rugby... mainly because I haven't taken the time to understand what the rules in rugby are. From what I can tell, they superficially look similar but have very different dynamics and so are probably as comparable as football (soccer) and rugby. I am pretty sure if some of the tackles allowed in NFL were done in rugby, there would be a lot of serious injuries, which is why they wear pads.

I tried watching the Superbowl a few years ago. But I had to switch off after about 45 mins. It was so frustrating. They spend more time standing around talking, than they do playing. I found myself shouting at the TV (Hurry up! Just hurry up!). They played for 10 seconds. Then spent 2 mins talking about what to do next. No wonder the game takes 4 hours. I bet they play less than 1 hr. I'm really sorry, I gave it a shot. But never again. I thought Rugby and NFL were going to be similar. But they're completely different. One is a sport. The other is a social club.

Rugby players are trained on how to tackle and hit relatively safely. There are some American football teams that train their players in rugby tackle techniques to improve player safety. A number of hits and tackles shown are actually illegal and players then get carded and even suspended for a number of games. Above the shoulder hits, head contact by the tackler, tip/spear tackles and in the air tackles are now illegal but some may have been legal at the time of the specific clip. That dive through the air try at 8:24 didn't stand as he placed the ball on the line, therefor in touch

You are watching professional players. They’re 6ft 4”, weigh 200 lbs and do 100 yds in 11 seconds. Amateurs don’t get tackled so hard or block with this impact. Club players are like anybody and don’t get hurt a lot. BTW some of these tackles are now illegal. Choking, kicking (people) , punching for example. Elbow in the face also.

To answer Mike's question. Any contact with the head or neck area even accidental in rugby is now a big no no and could result in the aggressor being sent off (made to leave the field) and not allowed to be replaced. So your team plays a man light for the rest of the match. These rules were tightened pretty recently due to the number of concussions players received from playing. My great uncle played professional rugby union for London Irish as a forward and you'd often find him post match with a black eye or his nose relocated half way across his face!!

Greetings from Scotland! I was born in South Wales and rugby was played in my school. I remember the day that the games teacher wanted to introduce us to football - we all sat on the side-lines and point blank refused to play it! So it was never "introduced" again! 😂 The best thing about rugby matches is that all the violence happens on the pitch during the game. VERY rare to see crowd battles, and normally, both teams supporters go down to the local pubs to drink together! Not something you see in football............. It is a brutal sport, but you know that before getting into the game. I was put in hospital at 13yo with damage to my hip. I was happy because it meant I had a month or two off school - the hospital had good food, it was warm, comfy beds and we all got on very well in the ward! 😊 Best of all, it was quite a way from my home and my parents couldn't afford to visit me very often - BONUS! 😂😂

The rugby world cup innaugral year was 1987, because of being boycotted, we were only allowed to participate in the rugby world cup from 1995 onwards. The difference is essentially that in rugby you must make an attempt to tackle the opponent by (trying) to wrap your arm(s) around them, while in American football you can just body check them. This means that, on average, NFL hits are harder, but this is mitigated by the greater use of protection.

You don't need to be huge in stature to play rugby. I played occasionally when I was younger. Muscular strength is more important than being large. I've known rugby players who are tall that are not as strong physically as a short, stocky player because they have less muscle than a shorter player. An example is that I'm only 5 foot 2 inches tall and I weigh about 224 lbs but much of that weight is because my shoulders are as broad as a doorway and that is where I have a lot of muscle. Even today in my job in heavy industry a can lift much heavier weights than most of my colleagues who are much taller than myself. So don't let the tall player fool you into presuming he's the strongest player. As the saying goes "The bigger they are, the harder they fall".

One tackle attempt very early on the ball carrier has his forearm up high and it comes in contact with the defender's head and the defender goes back and onto the ground This is likely a penalty because whether you're with the ball, or not you can't make contact with a player's head.

Know what you were saying about at least in nfl with helmet etc and they use it. It's very true and along the same lines as boxing. In boxing, the gloves tend to cause far more injuries because because can put far more of their power into the hit. Bareknuckle boxing on the other hand, although brutal tends to cause few injuries because nobody can hit with their full power or risk of breaking their hand is way higher.

How is it the Americans have managed to invent the 3 most boring games in the world? 1. American football. 4 hours of stoppages and 3 different teams playing for 10 seconds at a time. 2. Basketball. A team of very tall men run down a short court then score. Then the other team does the same thing. Then its repeated over and over and over again. 3. Baseball. Called rounders in England and played by girls, but the girls don't have great big gloves to help them catch it.

I was at school in the 1970's here in the UK, and it was normal for all boys to play rugby, cricket and football as part of our PE classes depending on time of the year. These guys are professionals but it always amazed me there weren't more serious injuries in school sports, as some lads were big and heavy whilst others were rather weak physically, and there was no dropping out, everyone just had to get on with it as best they could, minimal training but lots of contact and physical aggression.

Unlike NFL, when you get hit hard you don’t get a 3 minute break every couple of plays to recover, they have to get up and keep playing no matter how much they’re hurting (unless it’s a serious injury of course) It’s 40 minutes each half with no breaks so not just physically exhausting in terms of tackling and taking hits but also in terms of you cardio fitness as well. Just for info, tackling someone directly above the shoulders is illegal as is tackling a player whilst he is in mid air jumping for a ball.

Rugby referees especially in international games talk to the players regarding decisions and the public can hear the explanations too . Currently we see a condition called MND motor neuron disease , they blame head knocks or neck jerks as footballers heading the ball could be impacting the brain in the skull fluid . Nowadays if you lift a player off the ground in a tackle you must land them safely avoiding a neck injury via landing on their head first . No arm tackling above the shoulders again to protect the head . Of course accidents happen still , a player will be “ sin binned “ for 10 minutes I think it is or red carded depending on the severity of the foul

I wanted to send you a good close Scotland England game but i knew you would ignore it, for some reason it showed a 1hr 50 run time, it's literally just the game of 80 minutes. In both rugby and football Scotland and England are the first international games ever in the sports. We have a long history that's thats not always to sport though. The 6 nations are coming up the start of next year, i recommend giving that a watch.

Lived in Leicester for about 20 year. Getting to meet actual Tiger's players was like seeing the Gods descend from Olympus. Johnno seems about 8 foot tall and 3 foot wide in person.

You want too watch the women’s game. This video is bad. But they do usually tack around the waist. A normal game isn’t as brutal, it’s great too watch.

Enjoyed your rugby video. However this is an old video. Tackles were like this when I played but a lot of the tackles shown are now illegal. You are not now allowed to hit the head or tackle around the neck.

Great Video you guys. Love your Content. The Michael Jordan of Rugby according to me is Cheslin Kolbe. Theres is a video called "The Ultimate Athlete | Is Cheslin Kolbe The Best Rugby Player In The World?" Unreal Athlete!

I played rugby for my school and county. Never had too many bad injuries just the usual dislocated bones and twisted knees. My daughter also played rugby for Ireland and now my granddaughter who is just ten is playing seven a side rugby. They play seven a side before you go onto proper rugby it's more of a passing game with less tackles.

Good tackling technique is safe for both players, you just get the wind knocked out of you if they are much stronger/heavier. The problem is with the #$%^holes who just want to hurt you and tackle above the shoulder or shoulder check you, fortunately the rules are much clearer and penalties much harsher.

There are a lot of skills highlight videos out. But it makes it easier if you know the players. Lucky you will have a lot of them in the comments requested by the fans here today. Oh by the way, there are 2 distinct forms of the game. Check both out. Im a bit more biased to rugby but only cos its what we grew up playing. Nothing wrong with the other one. It was just introduced to us a bit later in life where I'm from

From the town of Rugby. Played for 15 years. If I could take a magic potion that would keep my body together long enough to play another ten minutes i'd pay anything. Them were the days.

Not sure they still play it now but as kids in the 80s/90s we played British Bulldogs, on tarmac at break time in primary school. Very brutal at times. Preparing us for this 😁

America played rugby for years and was the first country to win a gold medal for rugby at the 1924 summer Olympics held in Paris. The USA women's 7 aside rugby team also made history for winning a bronze medal a hundred years later in 2024 again at the Paris summer Olympics. Rugby was the main sport in America, but they started tinkling around with it and NFL was born. So, NFL has its origins from rugby.

Yes, a lot of those clips were "covid crowds". Still, club rugby doesn't traditionally get crowds that match NFL and big soccer club crowds. International Rugby Union and State of Origin Rugby League gets the big crowds

Rugby is a great sport, it teaches you respect, discipline, sportsmanship and true team bonding, having played Rugby through school from the age of 8, to club rugby into my late 20’s, exiting the game, having retained my good looks and all my own teeth, 😂😂…however my shoulder and knees, is another matter 😮😂😂

Watch Australia v England in the 2003 world final. Although not one try was scored, it's one of the best games you will ever see. Also, did you know that in rugby, tripping somebody up is way more punishable than punching somebody in the kisser?

You should definitely try watching a full game. I saw England play USA in Japan during the World Cup and the Japanese fans were so enthusiastic even if didn't fully understand what was going on. They high fived me every time England scored so my hands were pretty sore by the end.😂

We played this at High school in Scotland when the ground was too frozen for football and I feckin hated it. I love watching the Six nations tournament, World cup etc. You guys would love watching a game as there a very few stoppages and it's fast flowing unlike the NFL games. I can't stand American football because of the constant stop n start of each match. Mike was right about the helmets and padding, they cause more serious injuries than rugby with no protective equipment.

I played for one of the top English teams in the 1970s. I took and gave lots of hard tackles, and barely took any injuries. Of course there were plenty of bruises, but I only ever had two injuries that necessitated me leaving the pitch. One was a sprained ankle, which was treated with pain killing spray, an ice pack and a support bandage. I only missed about 5 mins of the match because I suffered the injury just before half time. The other one was in a tackle, when I was struck in the face by a boot. It was totally accidental, but split the skin under my eyebrow. I had to be taken to hospital for stitches, and missed the rest of the match. 50 years later, and my eyebrows still never grow evenly! Football (soccer) players seem to get worse injuries than rugby players.

There is a saying by rugby fans in the UK. “Football (Soccer) is 90 minutes of pretending you’re injured & rugby is 80 minutes of pretending you’re not”. The fabric helmet & tape around the head that some wear, is so they don’t get their ears ripped off in scrums. You were surprised by them pulling by the shirt; they can also pull them by their hair! Which is why most rugby players have short hair & the 1s that do have long hair are absolute beasts. Women’s rugby doesn’t shy away from hits either.

Seeing as in America they don't even let you cross the road by yourself (something in Europe they teach little children to do safely), no wonder you are shocked at rugby!

A lot of rugby fans will defend their sport to the end against NFL. The truth is that the NFL guys have no rules about how they hit the opposition, head first, head on head, no arms etc. Hence their need for padding. Rugby tackle laws are strictly governed so whilst the hits are still brutal, there is much more control and thus less need for the protective clothing.

It's a very physical sport. South Africa (The Springboks) and NewZealand (The AllBlacks) are among the best teams in the world. Princess Anne's Daughter Zara is married to a former rugby player Mike Phillips and asked about the physicality of the game referenced a clip showing an altercation between two players. One guy elbowed the other in the face breaking his nose. The Guy with the broken nose got up walked over to his assailant punched him in the face. Then played the rest of the game with a broken nose. After the game ended the two shook hands. Compare that to professional soccer. A player gets a minor hit on the leg in a tackle he goes down screaming abd writhing in agony. The game stops the team medic a d physio run on to the pitch apply an icepack give him a massage and he's back on his feet playing within 5 minutes!😅
