@bhanumatirao4223
@bhanumatirao4223 5 жыл бұрын
It is actually called a Taanam, part of the Raagam Taanam. Pallavi concept which is the highlight of a karnatik music concert. Taanam is improvisation of the Raaga , which in this case is Shanmukhapriya. It lays stress on rendering the notes if the Raaga with a rhythm. Though there is a basic pattern to it much is extempore and very creative with spontaneous interactions between the artists. A Raaga is a combination of notes of the octave which is pleasant to the ear and also evokes and depicts emotions or bhaava. The major scale in western music is called Shankarabharana. Much of oriental music is in a Raaga we call Mohan which has 6 notes . It lacks Fa (MA in India) AMD tee ( Ni for us).It is a happy sounding Raaga and Mohana means beautiful or pleasant. The long instrument is called the tamboora or tamboori in the south. The south Indian tamboora has a hollow base of wood and 4 strings tuned in this order Fa So So (both high end of major scale ) and last lower So It is tuned the the scale that the singer sings in. For example G or G sharp, and all the instruments including the mridangam are tuned to the same pitch. We have 2 systems of classical music in India, both based on the Raaga system, but are different styles ..about 4000 years old!

This is not a Veena. The string one by the lady in Purple saree is violin. The lady with the tall instrument- it's called Tanpura or Tamburi which is a supporting instrument. When you say Do re mi fa so la ti do.. we have similar base notes called sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa. Any musical to be perfected comes with perfecting the 1st, 5th and the 8th note.. sa, pa, sa.. The sa pa sa is what forms the tunes, the base for different types of them. The Tanpura essentially helps the singer always keep the base of the tune. The man in yellow is sitting with a beating instrument called Mridangam. It is one of the primary percussion instrument in a carnatic music set up. And the last one is called Ghatam. It is another percussion instrument in south Indian music..it is a clay pot locally known as matka. Hope this helps :)

@@gauravmshr actually Veena is the generic name only for diffetent types of Veena. Other string instruments have different names which have originated and have their own forms from the different types of Veena. @@Alakshendra It is the Thaanam portion of what is called the Ragam - Thaanam- Pallavi. The Raagam part has Alaapanai ( Aalaap in Hindustani, I think) which has the Raga explored in Akaaram,while ,the Thaanam is what they reviewed, explores the Ragam with Thaalam,( beat) ,too ,using only the two syllables of 'thaa' & 'nam', hence the name Thaanam,while the Pallavi explores the Raagam by setting it to lyrics , usually only a couple of lines. Veena on the contrary is a full music instrument that has different types based on the region it is made from or how the sound box is carved like. Different wood gives a different musical edge to strings. It always played sitting down in crossed legged position. The instrument is horizontally resting where the sound dome sits on the right thigh or the floor..and the supporting dome sits on the left thigh. It depends on the instrument player's body gait and comfort level.

Apart from the folk music that varies from region to region, traditional Indian music is of two kinds - Carnatic (roots in South India) and Hindustani (from North India). Even instruments used in these two schools of music are different. For example, the sideways drums you saw in this video is called the mridangam - this instrument is used in Carnatic music, while the tabla - a 2-piece drum set is used in Hindustani. There are 3 different "big tall string instruments" in traditional Indian music. The one used in this video is called the Tanpura (in Hindi) or Tamboori (in other south Indian languages). It's purpose is similar to the A-440 thing that Rick was talking about. The other string instrument that looks similar to the Tanpura is the Sitar - this is what Pandit Ravishankar used to play. The Sitar is again a Hindustani instrument. The Carnatic equivalent of the Sitar, and probably the older one is the Veena. The position of the violin is such only because it is common practice to sit cross-legged while performing. So that position is most ergonomic. Two of the many many doyens of the Indian music fraternity you should check out - Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (Hindustani Classical) & MS Subbulakshmi (Carnatic Classical). Also check out this national integration video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6K8emOfn82eY5o. This has most of the important Indian musical instruments, and also the prominent dance forms (each state had a different dance form).

What you saw the violinist do is replicate EXACTLY what Aruna did with her voice. It's one of the first things accompanying instrumentalists learn, is to be able to follow, memorize, and provide a real-time "reverb", so to speak. If you listen carefully, you'll hear her playing while Aruna is singing as well: just after she sings a note, the violinist will play it as if it's telepathic communication.

Hi, Rick and Korbin. This was Mrs.Aruna Sairam performing one of the most complex genres of Carnatic music.its called Raga, Tana, pallavi. You just listened to the tana aspect which is improvisation of a scale in a very rhythmic manner. The Raga aspect shows the extense and the possibility of the movement of notes within the framework set for a scale. The pallavi aspect is a very short lyrical piece which is sung . Here the singer uses a lot of mathematical calculations to show the expertise. Tq for reacting so wonderfully. Music is universal.
