Ragas are pre-defined notes with all the micronotes in between included. Two ragas will have two different set of notes and the musician will go ascending and descending notes on the raga and improvise. While the percussionist have an idea where the singer will go, they still have to follow the improvisation and ensure they make it more beautiful. Also, the change the tempo as well when improvising. Takes years of practice to reach the level of artistry.

Micro tones depend on which system we're talking about here, as far as carnatic music is concerned micro tones are almost never sung in any substantial way, the markings for micro tones are present in raaga guides and such but they are never sung even by veteran musicians

As an example, we will look at raga Khamaj, which is associated with sensuality, feminine beauty, the Hindu personification of god Radha Krishna, and the time between midnight and 3 am. A raga is a musical mode in the Indian classical music tradition used in an improvised performance. Modes are collections of musical notes coupled with rules about how those notes should be used. Raaga (Hindustani) or Raagam (Karnatic) is not colour. It is a musical mode or sound, which inturn is obtained by collection of Swarams (Notes as called in Western music). Each Raaga is unique because Swarams in that are differently arranged. That's why Hindustani +Karnatic music (both are Indian classical) has close to 300 Raagas/Raagams.

Rick, you are correct about the idea of a 'Raag' but when one says that they are 'doing' a raag, it is not just a piece of the repertoire but also it basically means that they are exploring the combinations of notes in the raag. So essentially, the notes in the two raagas in ChandraKauns and madhukauns will sound different, but here they are being sung together. For example, when you first listened to Kaushiki Chakraborty, she was singing in Raag Bhimpalasi. The way each note is sung in a raag is what makes it different from another. oh my God, this cant be real how pitch perfect is she singing...wow absolutely unbelievable. you cant explain it when you hear the notes hit perfectly under a soothing voice.Her voice is almost like an ideal voice to teach those ragaas. *Raga -means a type arragement of notes which follows a particular pattern. Oh you don't know how many greatest musicians we had in India like Tansen who when used to sing raag megh malhar than rain started pouring and when he used to sing Deepak raag than lamps automatically light up. Only he and his daughter was able to sing those raag. And there is a story too related to Deepak raag that on insisted by king Akbar in whose court Tansen was a royal singer, tansen had to sing Deepak raag but after singing it he started to get burning sensations all over his body and inside too and he had an acute thirst which even after drinking lots of water didn't died. So he sent someone to bring his daughter knowing that only she can save him by singing rain raag megh malhar. Then his daughter came and sing megh malhar raag and saved his life. By the way Rick is looking very handsome in this blue gray silk kurta. I hope its a gift from indarani😁😉

They are Biological siblings too. Not ideological only. They learnt together Violin first . Now They are Binary stars both In Voice and occasionally in Violin too. Violin cannot reveal the beauty of the poetry in the Compositions. They are genius twins in Carnatic Music. Because there are so many stars in the Sky the music Acaddmy has a tradition of giving the Most prestigious award once a year and one per year to only those singers who are great singers and technically brilliant and extend the frontiers. Still it has expanded that more and more and stars are born. The awardee has to preside over a conference of similar presidents and guide the conference. There is no question They will have the highest award and it is already in the folds of their beautiful Sarees. They are revealing their artistry and marry lest they slow down stuck in mundane day to day family responsibilities. They will be the one of the brightest stars in the firmament, for ever.

A raga is actually in western terms - a scale, for example, the Lydian scale. It's a collection, permutation and combination of notes - natural, flat, and sharp. This collection is a basic structure, within which artists improvise on the spot and present performances. The "structure" refers to the notes used in the raga, and the way they are approached as well, as the same note can be sung with varying emotions.

Explained..!! A Raga, in simple terms, is similar to the western modes where combinations of semitones and wholetones in an octave give you different modes like Major, minor, Lydian etc. For comparison and to give you some ideas: In C Major scale(Ionian Mode), if you sharpen the note F, you get Lydian. Major is "Raga Shankarabharana" of Carnatic music (Called Raag Bilaval in Hindustani music) and Lydian is "Raga Kalyani" of Carnatic music (Called Raag Yaman in Hindustani music). Now about 2 Ragas she sang, through a device called Grahabheda. (I'm Taking Major & Lydian as examples for easy understanding). Take C Major and make F as your root note and play till the F of the next octave. You get F Lydian. That's how she sang the Ragas Madhukauns and Chandrakauns. Thanks for your reaction and bringing attention to our music. Hopefully, westerners also get hooked into our music. Please, keep listening carefully and eventually it will all make sense. I don't know Carnatic, but the concept of a raga should be similar to North Indian classical. Essentially, in North Indian Classical music, a raga is based on one of 10 Thaats, whereas in Carnatic they have 72 melakartas. The Thaat (north Indian) or melakarta (south Indian) is equivalent to a scale in Western Music, for example Bilaval Thaat is the same as the major scale or Asavari Thaat will be the same as the Western minor scale, and so on. In Western Music you mostly play tunes in say one major and perhaps three or four minor scales. However, North Indian Classical uses 10 scales (Thaats) and South Indian (Carnatic) uses 72 scales since there are a total of 72 permutations of how full tones and half tones can be played in a 12 note chromatic scale. The tunings of the notes are a little different. Western music uses the Equal Tempered chromatic scale whereas Indian classical music uses Just Intonation tuning. In total the North Indian system as 22 tunings in a scale compared to 12 fixed tunings (notes) in the Western equal tempered chromatic scale. The reason for these tunings in North Indian classical is that each note except for the starting note and the perfect fifth are fixed whereas the remain 10 notes of the Western chromatic scale each have 2 tunings approximately 20 or 21 cents apart. Depending on the background drone tuning which changes with the Raga -- each Raga has its own flavour, so even though we have a total of 12 notes in the scale, we select those 12 from the 22 variations of tunings to best produce the flavour of the raga. Now what is a raga ? It may be thought of as a characteristic melody based on the notes of the Thaat (North India) or Melakarta (South India). So for example, we may have several Ragas created in the Bilaval Thaat (Western major scale). Typically, a Raga has at least 5 notes in ascension (aahroh) and descension (avroh). The ascension uses particular notes upwards and the descension uses particular notes downwards, but usually from within the Thaat the raga is based on (there are exceptions to the rule). So think of it as a path up the scale and a path down the scale. If you break either path, you break the flavour of the Raga and the Indian audiences who are seasoned listeners will at once know you broke the Raga. Furthermore, a Raga has a signature, which is a characteristic group of notes within the melody that is played from time to time to keep the mood of the raga in focus. The raga also has a dominant note and a sub-dominant note. So the improvisation phrases may emphasize the dominant note more often and then the sub dominant note as well but less often. The notes are not plain notes like in Western music. Instead, the notes have grace notes which they slide up or down from to the played note. These slides are also part of the raga movement (chalan) that give it its characteristic mood. You cannot simply play the notes of a raga at random, you have to follow the path up the scale, a path down the scale, emphasize the signature, the dominant and sub dominant notes with the characteristic graces note slides and embellishments etc. that are common to the given raga. The raga also has a particular time of the day it is played or sung, and it also has a particular season in the year it is played. For example as the monsoon approaches, Indian Classical musicians play Raga Megh or Miyan Malhar and so on. In North Indian classical music, the musicians start slow with what we call an aalaap which translated means meditation. Here we gradually introduce each note of the raga, starting from the Sa (which is like Doh in Wester solfa notation) we introduce the ascension and descension, the signature (pakad), gradually moving up to the upper Sa till the whole raga is introduced and the mood of the raga is built up (that's why it goes on for an hour or so). The percussionist doesn't intervene at this point. In the next, phase we introduce a signature song (the bandish) which has mostly two verses of words, a lower portion (the sthaaee) followed by a higher portion (the antara). This is the point at which the percussionist also introduces the agreed upon beat cycle. Both, the Sthaaee and Antara must fit in the beat cycle with emphasize on the phrase or word sung on the start of the beat cycle, called the SUM or synchronization point. Improvisations are introduced into the Bandish as sequences of notes such that you must always complete the sequence (usually) on the synchronization point (SUM) and pick up the bandish at the correct point. The musicians are so well practiced that they can improvise on the fly and picture long sequences of notes that fit into the beat cycle. That's why they never use sheet music. It's all done by memory and practice. During these improvisations they must be careful to follow the rules of the raga (a characteristic melody) that has a path upward, a path downward, a signature, a dominant and sub dominant note with slides typical to that raga, and so on. For a lot of Westerners, the music may sound repetitive and monotonous, but as you get used to it and listen carefully, you will see a kaleidoscope of infinite variations and patterns. No two performances of a raga are ever identical, and the musicians are so well practiced that they never need to rehearse. Each performer knows the rules of the raga so that whether they are instrumentalists, percussionists, or singers, they intuitively know exactly when to fit phrases into the performance so that they can almost telepathically know how to synchronize their improvisation with the improvisations of the other performers, so that the whole performance becomes like a combined telepathic musical game -- that's why you see them look at each other and smile when they hit the correct synchronization points. The audiences are also quite sophisticated and you will often hear an "AHAAA" on a beautiful improvisational phrase that precisely fits into the beat cycle where they again pick up Bandish. You will also see each performer complementing the others, as each one introduces his/her improvised and synchronized phrases. So the whole thing becomes like telepathic meditative game that can go on for hours. In the 1970s and 1980s as kids we went to many musical concerts that went on continuously for a week or two 24/7. We would start listening to morning ragas, go into afternoon ragas, then midnight ragas and again early morning ragas. Each musician would play for or five hours and rotate performances. It was great ! time didn't matter, we even slept in the open air concert gatherings.

I will try to explain what is raga in short but just very basic is it’s a set of basic notations and you are allowed to sing that group of set notations as you can vocally sing but within that given set . In set is given name as raga and group of raga’s are again classified as morning-evening midnight etc as per the environmental situations .This notations are again accompanied by Tal , that’s a Rethum which again has its bits specified . Something basics I tried to explain .

What the Artist said , by singing two ragas at the same time, is shifting the key for the same scale. Chandrakauns is Sa Ga2 Ma1 Da1 Ni3 . In this scale, if 'Ma1' is transposed as 'Sa' then what results is Sa Ga2 Ma2 Pa Ni2. which is Madhukauns. Which means that the Scale Chandrakauns, set to "C" will be Madhukauns in "F".

Ragas are actually a preset combination of musical notes. Each raga has a different combination of notes that it gives you a specific emotion and mood. And a singer who improvises in a particular raga uses the specific combination of that raga skillfully to bring out the emotion and mood connected to that raga to the fullest.... This is Amazing! They are singing hindustani raagas, but if you want to experience their carnatic concerts(since both of them are from Chennai which is in the south) you both should delfinitely come to Chennai (Tamil Nadu) in the month of December since it is officially the Margazhi kutcheri season(Margazhi- Hindu Tamil month for Nov-Dec, kutcheri- is basically a term for a carnatic concert).There will be continuous concerts of different singers from morning till late evening, every single day and the schedules will be out before a month or so. It is like a festival! There are many songs from retro bollywood movies based on same Raga...raga means basically mood. A certain notes of music bound together in certain combination create one mood (raga). The diffrent set of combination will create another mood (Raga). So there are morning raga, evening raga and raga suited for different emotions.

So in a raaga there will be an ascending sequence of notes and a decending sequence of notes. There are also rules about combinations you can or should use in a raaga. After all there are only 7 sharp and 7 flat notes. So the combinations could be 7 raised to the power of seven compositions but only few raagas.
