A few years back, I went for a friend's wedding in Bangalore. When the ceremony started, there was Carnatic music playing. It was such a mistake. All of us were fixated on the musicians and had completely forgotten about the bride and the groom. It was transcendental! ❤️

This is a segment of the same musical piece you listened to from Kuldeep M Pai. Half of this piece are vocal representations of rhythmic syllables and half are lyrics in sanskrit, they intertwine with each other. You can see that the rhythmic syllables Aruna Ma'am sings is parallel to what was played on the mridangam, almost as if she commanded or directed the rhythm. This is a dance piece, the rhythmic syllables are commonly used to direct Bharathanatyam dancers, and the song itself describes Lord Krishna's dance upon the Snake Kalinga. The raga or scale used in this piece is Ghambeera Nattai, a very sweet raga, child of the parent raga Chalanata. "Ghambeera" means boldness or grandness and thus the raga conveys grand feelings. This is a Carnatic piece. The instruments played were the Mridangam, Veena, Violin, Ghatam and the Tambura Notes on the discussion: she only used one raga in this piece, the transitioning took place between the 'melody and lyrics' and the 'Rhythmic syllables'. Indian music, Carnatic in this case is composed in many languages including Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit and Kannada. In fact Telugu is favored by many of the great composers of Carnatic music. This piece was written by oothukadu venkata subbaiyer a composer who lived in Tamil Nadu and spoke the Tamil language. The performance and the way the vocalist was having fun is _for_ the audience, it's not because she thinks she is good, as she has said many times, it's because she wants the audience to have in on the music. Also, this is a dance piece, the rhythmic syllables are used to direct Bharathanatyam dancers, so it's naturally jumpy.

The myth behind the poem: When Lord Krishna was a child he was a cowherd in the forest of Brindavan that rose along the banks of the river Yamuna. All animals near a part of the river were dying mysteriously and Krishna went to investigate. There Kalinga (Kaliya) the 9-headed snake had made it's home and it's poison was killing all the animals. Krishna asked the snake to leave, but it refused. So Krishna began to "fight" the snake by dancing on it's heads dodging the snake's attempts to bite him. When the snake finally grew tired and understood that it couldn't win, it pleaded to Krishna that it couldn't leave the river because the eagle Garuda, also the vehicle of Lord Vishnu, would hunt and kill it. Krishna told the snake that Garuda would not hunt and kill Kalinga because he would identify Krishna's footprints on the snake's heads and understand that Kalinga is a devotee of Krishna. The poet, Oothukkadu Venkata Subba Iyer, draws inspiration from this divine dance to write the poem in the form of a thillana. A thillana is composed with rhythmic syllables in the pallavi and anupallavi (chorus) and lyrics in the charanam (verse). Here the rhythmic portions correspond to the dancing, and the lyrics describe how the poet feels as he sees the divine dance unfold. This rendtion is only the last couple of lines in the full poem. You have reacted to the full rendition by Kuldeep M Pai along with his proteges, Sooryagaayathri and Rahul Vellal. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmTOhmybo8R6abs&ab_channel=OURSTUPIDREACTIONS You have already reacted, as Korbin noted, to an Aalap in the Raag Shanmukhapriya by Aruna Sairam. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKGnc2lqeNWdbqM&ab_channel=OURSTUPIDREACTIONS You missed identifying Jayanthi Kumaresh on the Veena. You must read Krishna’s story of dueling Kalinga the Serpent. The transitions are the dance between Krishna and Kalinga - apparent adversaries, and yet Krishna the all pervasive Vishnu Avataar and Kalinga the enamored devotee who is playing his part in the cosmic dance of Krishna! Aruna Sairam is brilliant at painting a picture with her music!

I have already mentioned that it was because of OSR that I was reintroduced to the Indian classical music scene. But it was this performance that cemented it as one of my new forms of entertainment. I must have listened to this and Kaushiki Chakraborthy's performance of Bhimpalasi at least 10 times each on that day alone. Because I have seen this video so many times, I can identify it just by the thumbnail. I have turned off my search and view histories so that I don't get any suggestions and watch anything only as I choose to. So I was confused when I saw Aruna Sairam's face in the suggestions. And then it dawned on me -- this wasn't just a suggestion, OSR was reacting to the performance. Oh! How I have waited for this day since August of 2019. I have always wanted you to listen to this, but I never suggested it. Mainly because at that time I wasn't someone who would interact with people on the internet. This is something that OSR has changed for me indirectly, but that's another story. And also because if you started reacting to things I would demand, then the rest of the family would miss out on you reacting to movie trailers and other things, which I don't know/care about -- and that's not fair.

Indian languages are rooted in Sanskrit AND Tamil. Just correcting your statement, when you just said Sanskrit. The Dravidian language family is rooted in Old Tamil and the Indo-Aryan language family is rooted in Sanskrit. And Carnatic music is a mix of Dravidian and Indo-Aryan cultures. A lot of songs are in the languages based on both Sanskrit and Old Tamil, like Telugu, Kannada, modern Tamil.

Kalinga Narthana Thillana sings the story of Krishna and Kaliya. Context: On the banks of the river Yamuna, where lay the town of Vrindavan lived Krishna, the son of the village head, as a cowherd boy in adolescence. The legend goes that the animals began to die mysteriously in the forests of Vrindavan. One day, Krishna was playing near the river with his friends when their ball got kicked into the river. Everybody tried to dissuade Krishna from going into the river and retrieving the ball because apparently the river was poisoned by the venom of King Kaliya, a giant nine headed black serpent who had come to live in the Yamuna and had been the cause of the animals dying. Krishna despite everything jumped into the river to get the ball back in childish defiance. Some of the kids ran back and told their parents and the entire village ran to the banks of the river. Krishna as far as the eyes could see had disappeared and his mother Yashodha beat her chest and wailed as people tried to stop her from going to get her son. Meanwhile, in the depths of the river, Krishna, in search of the ball, comes across Kaliya and asks him to leave the river. Kaliya only laughs and tries to get at him but Krishna dodges the giant serpent and jumps atop his head. Krishna then proceeds to jump and dance atop Kaliya's heads as the furious beast tries to get him off and kill him. Eventually Kaliya begins to die with pain and exhaustion and pleads with Krishna to stop. When Krishna ignores him, Kaliya's wives come to the scene and plead with Krishna to spare their husband. They agree to leave the river Yamuna but tell Krishna that they've nowhere else to go as the King of Eagles, Garuda who is the ride of Lord Vishnu, will hunt them down. Krishna who is an avatar of Vishnu laughs at this and says that that won't happen because Garuda will spot the impression of Krishna's feet on Kaliya's head and recognize in him a devotee of Vishnu. The song describes the play of Krishna with his friends and then his fight with King Kaliya in the river Yamuna.

PS: She is not switching in between two ragas. She is singing one raga only. It is not common to sing multiple ragas one after another with nearly no transition time in between; although, this might me done for some sort of demonstration or comparison of two ragas.
