Thai nicknames are weird. The parents or friends will adopt the literal Thai translation of an English or other European language word, but usually English. It's usually a common one they've seen or heard a lot from American pop culture, which they don't know the meaning of, but sounds cool in Thai or resembles a different Thai word. The child will then go by that nickname, which doesn't even slightly resemble their given name, instead of their birth name for the rest of their life. IMO American's beef jerky and Thai's Nua-dad-deaw, Nua-kem are basically the same thing. Slice of dried spice and salted beef. In Thailand we just have intense sun everyday so we just salt it and sun dry it. While beef jerky were baked to dry. Thai's Nua-kem were need to cook again before eat, usually deep fried. While in this video, the girl mentioned Nua-dad-deaw were literally translate as one-sun-beef are expose to just one dose of sun (not more than a day) so there're still some beef moist inside. Nua-kem in the other hands means salty-beef are use to call the complete salted dry beef that were able persevere for months.

Thai can have many different names, as a half I don’t have a Thai name, but a Thai nickname that almost every Thai I meet call me, it’s a plant. My aunt literally has the word heart in her name, my moms friend is named (probably her real name) frog (in Thai) and my childhood friends mom’s name is bird. Anything goes Btw funny story, since my sister has a Thai name that’s registered, a a substitute teacher read her name wrong and said “Super porn? Is there a student named super porn here?” XD
