Why do you show the wrong flag for England the union flag the English flag is not that flag the English flag is called the saint George flag the Union flag is called by the wrong name also its actually called the union flag its only meant to be called the union jack when it's on a ship because the jack is referring to the red background you will see only on a ship the English flag is only red and white a red cross with a white background

Glad you went to a proper chippy rather than judging fish and chips from a pub. The serving of chips did look a bit stingy though, better having them wrapped for take out in future and then eat them from the grease proof paper with your hands or a plastic fork from the chippy, that’s the proper chippy experience :-)

I'm originally from Yorkshire but I have lived 'down south' (on the south coast) for 20 years and I have found that in London and the south, most fish and chip shops keep the skin on the fish but most fish and chip shops 'up north' or at least in Yorkshire, take the skin off. I prefer the skin off and so does my partner (who's a southerner). British people are usually very loyal to their local fish and chip shop and it seems to correlate that the dingier looking the shop, the better the fish and chips!

As I remember it, growing up in the fifties and sixties the chips were a bit different. They weren't as 'crispy' on the outside; possibly because we often bought them from fish and chip shops and took them home wrapped in newspaper. I think the one's we get today are more a French style chip. The other thing was that. one always had vinegar with one's chips.

Im not a Londoner, but a Midlander, and cooking lots of fish and chips myself over the years and having eaten more than my fair share of them, fish is generally cooked without skin, although sometimes haddock and particularly plaice, is cooked skin on due to size or how delicate the fish is. I was thinking of recommending these two places but was trying to work out which would be best. Probably a difficult choice but both are well worth a try. I think the queue out of the door probably shows that a place is popular, don't you think? They do not sell any other meals like sausage and chips, meat pies etc. The fish and chips stand alone and people from far and wide, as well as the locals can't get enough. Then I think of Whitby and remember some of the tastiest most mouthwatering meals we have had there and I still don't know how to make a choice between the two places x

Stumbled across your channel tonight and like the content, you both seem very down to earth and have interesting opinions and perspectives. In regards to fish and chips the thing I find difficult explaining to extended family and also some friends that visit from the States is that when they insist on having “authentic fish and chips” as they put it, there’s a big difference between “fish and chips” off the menu at a sit down restaurant and how that majority of us Brits actually experience it which is normally from what you’d call a local “chippy”/“fish and chip shop”/“chip shop”, it’s a bit like thinking you are having an authentic baseball hot dog by getting it from a five guys I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️ (not sure if that’s the best comparison 😅) I just let them get on with it, they also insist on doing a “traditional” English pub and end up in tourist trap London pubs that have barely any resemblance to the average person’s local pub. Some of the best pubs are either in suburban areas or out in the countryside, they are the kind of places where they have regulars that live locally and where people know one another, it’s a community hub of sorts.

There are a few regional variations in what chippies across the UK offer, so if your travels take you around the Manchester area you should try chips & Holland's steak pudding or meat & potato pie with gravy. They don't do that in the south. Sadly the size of Holland's pies & puds has recently shrunk due to "shrinkflation", but they're still really good!

Hi guys, Looks like you were in London during the heatwave and not the snow storms we had last week! Fish and chips looked good but not great. Skin on is more usual as that helps they hold the fish while dipping it in batter but some places do serve it skinless. I'm not a fan of the skin but many are. I like lots of salt and vinger on mine. Are you going to try Britain's favourite dish - Chicken Tikka masala?

Well, I suppose like in your country, the best fish and chips are mostly found by or near the sea. Fish always tastes better, the fresher it is. I know of pubs where the landlord goes out with his boat early in the morning to catch what's going to be on the menu later that day. But you only can get that at coastal locations.

Some chippies serve their fish with the skin on, and some serve it without. Personally, I prefer fish with the skin off (if it was served with the skin on, then I'd leave the skin) and at the local F and C shop I regularly visit, I usually have haddock with the skin off - but you have to ask for it when you order.

The skin (which is totally safe to eat) on haddock helps it to hold together during frying, plus it imparts more flavour and contains most of the 'goodness' such as nutrients like iron and omega-3 fatty acids. Haddock is rich in minerals that help to build bone strength and regulate your heart rate, and this includes everything from selenium (which has been reported to help prevent cancer, heart disease, diabetes and a weak immune system), to the likes of magnesium, potassium, zinc and iron. Generally in London, most chippy's cook battered fish with the skin on, whereas Up North they will usually take it off.

As someone who worked in a coastal pub restaurant that served award-winning fish and chips when I was in my teens, the reasons we always left the skin on the fish was: a) the fish was fresh caught (often by the owner of the pub himself,) and that's a good way to know that you're getting fresh, WHOLE fish fillet rather than hacked-up fish squashed into a fillet shape (like most of the ones you buy in packets in the supermarkets.) b) It's a quick and easy way of knowing you're serving the right fish to your customer. Haddock has a thin black line running down the centre of its body, while cod has no line. So the chef battering and frying the fish knows which one is which when they're preparing the order (you can still see it through the batter.)
@stevebarlow3154
@stevebarlow3154 2 жыл бұрын
Maerahn, most round fish and flat fish, that started as round like the plaice, have a lateral line down their side. In the case of cod it is a white line, which is probably why you didn't notice it, the same for Coley (Coalfish). The lateral line is part of a fish's sensory system.

Skin on the fish depends on the fish, plus, the skin is healthy for you and contains many essential oils and vitamins.. some fish have bones, some have skin, try Cod, Plaice and Haddock as well as others and see if you can see which you prefer. ‘Chips’ (large french fries) typically are doused with far far too much salt then drowned in buckets of vinegar.. its an acquired taste but one that when accompanied by a slice or two pf buttered bread and a dollop of tomatoe sauce can take you back too long forgotten childhood places. Kudos on trying the mushy peas, again an acquired taste.. although the ‘typical’ english shop meal is kore likely ‘chicken & mushroom pie’ or steak pudding with chips and gravy.. Another must try is visit a Chinese takeaway, a serving of rice with ‘curry sauce’ has been the saviour of many a drunk sould on the long walk back from the bar on a cold night, curry sauce on ‘chips’ (with the x10 salt and vinegar) served from a Chinese takeaway is one of the deepest hidden foods we have. Just be forewarned, walking whilst eating curry and rice or curry and chips would more often than not end up in you wearing it and arriving at your front door ‘camo style’… And while in the uk, try Chinese and Indian food (and others).. the taste will be wildly different from what you are used to as they cater to different tastes in the UK.. You may heard of pie, chips and eel sauce or ‘Liqueur’.. its really only served in East london and more of a tourist thing, 95% of english fish/pie and chip shops will have gravy/curry sauce/beans/mushy peas… eel sauce is ‘my fair lady’ kinda old school.. Enjoy discovering London food, you must check out the borough market street food.. god I wish I was you finding the foods for the first time. Remember, real ale served at room temp , scampi & lemon fries, scotch eggs, full english breakfast, bacon crisps/chips… just so much to list.. Enjoy!!!

I've been searching for the perfect Fish and Chips for all my adult life, so 30-odd years. My simplest rule-of-thumb is that when you go in, ask them if they sell bits or scraps (other terms are available) and tartare sauce not from a packet. If they do, you could well be onto a winner. Sadly, the former delicacy seems to be fading fast in the south (east?) of England. Not sure about elsewhere but suspect still going strong in Midlands and North. Dripping's a bonus, but you wouldn't want to eat that every day. Fantastic video though and glad you enjoyed your food.
