Amira Willighagen - Nessun Dorma - for English-speaking viewers

Amira Willighagen performs Nessun Dorma during the Finals of Holland's Got Talent held on 28 December 2013.
Based on the outcome of public voting, she went on to be declared the overall winner of Holland's Got Talent for 2013. Her prize includes a trip to Las Vegas for her family and herself and a performance contract at The Strip in Las Vegas.

My father used to tell me " listen to opera and classical music with your eyes closed and your soul wide open to feel and sense the greatness behind such music". My father was right. I don't profess to be an expert on such classic music or opera but I close my eyes and listen... Listening to this song and Amira's other songs and I just cannot stop the tears rolling down my face.. It's like listening to Pavarotti sing nessun dorma and you feel your whole heart in your throat. Just amazing. Should there be a concert, or a moment in time with Andre Rieu I would love to see a live performance.

+CC Rider No Amira is terrible. She's off in many places, has horrid Italian diction, and her vibrato is too wide. Just compare her O Mio Babbino Caro with that of a true operatic soprano like Renee Fleming or Kiri Te Kanawa. No comparison. Any pro opera singer is better than Amira.

Ihdc1 Amira the "terrible" has become the most searched and watched opera singer on social media from late 2016 up to the present. Add up the ten highest viewed opera videos by other opera singers posted on youtube since late last year and the total won't even come close to Amira's numbers. @@Ihdc1 She. Is. A. CHILD. Of course 9-year-old Willighagen's breathing was all over the place, her diction muddy and her phrasing stilted - practically an infant with no training whatsoever. I recommend you look up her more recent performances, now that she's had some coaching. To the voice of guileless purity she's added breath control to support her contralto register, the phrasing is smoother and the diction is improving - she's better in Italian than she is in English, because she DOESN'T speak it. Her English may always have the heavy Dutch accent, she learned it badly too young. With "foreign" languages she's working on sound rather than meaning.

She may be the most talented or have the most potential, but she is certainly not the best. I am not enough of an opera fan to name the current prima donna, but getting there requires a lot of work that Willighagen hasn't had time to do.

She certainly is the best, just not the most experienced or technically proficient, yet. Vocally she's doing what very few have ever done or will do. At age 12 she's and with very little training she's miles ahead of all others everywhere. If she want's the Opera Stage, she'll have a place among the greats.

Well, I don't know what you mean by proficiency seeing proficiency isn't really included in the vocal arts (maybe in breathing and phrasing). Having worked with vocalists for a career - female to be precise - I can say, Amira is among the most naturally talented I've ever heard and may in fact be the best female vocalist on the planet (my opinion she is). Not by any means of her working to be that, just by her as an instrument. She just is. I would agree I hope I live long enough to see her fill out and become a more technical vocalist to support her enormous talent - it seems what little coaching she's had has pointed her in the right direction. My other hope is she lands on the Opera stage in the great roles and even roles written for her (if there are still any being written in these next decades).

I spent my whole afternoon listening to her pieces over and over, and I can't come out of my astonishment. She is one in a 100 million. She virtually embodies the beauty of music through her voice in a way I have never heard before. I liked opera very much, but thanks to Amira, now I LOVE opera. She will leave a very deep presence in universal art. Her gift is unique! God bless her, her brother and HER PARENTS from whom she was born, received her education and encouragement in her skills and her noble heart, as shown through her donations to poor children in Africa. Amira Willighagen got better with each of her performances on Holland's Got Talent [my opinion]. This clip is from her final performance and she just seemed to put it all together here. The before-during-and-after moments of the chorus's interlude ere the parts that impressed me. Before: She takes the song to a higher level. During: She closes her eyes while the chorus sings and suddenly looks to be about 3-years-old. After: She resumes singing and suddenly looks 20-years-old. I have read some of the comments of the critics, and I am sure they know what they are talking about. But, Amira Willighagen appeals to a wider audience. Of the voters who voted on whether or not they liked this video, 97% voted that they liked it. Sometimes, what it is all about, is whether or not we like or we dislike something. A positive result of my watching Amira Willighagen perform is that I have looked at KZbin clips of other performers singing the songs that Amira sang on this program. I plan to watch more. But, the ones I have watched repeatedly are those of Amira. There is something about her innocence and poise that I find refreshing -- and her story, like those of Susan Boyle and Paul Potts -- is inspiring.

She got most of the words correct but what is more important is her voice is pitch perfect note for note with no exaggerations or attempts at vocal gymnastics - she is true to the score. What's even more incredible is the depth of her voice and this is a 9 yr old here who has had no vocal training whatsoever. She hears the music and her voice takes over - truly incredible - she may be the best female vocalist on the planet. From her first audition on this show to the final is an incredible growth and to think she started at a high level. When Dan is confounded by her ability is the most honest definition of what is this little girl.

This child makes adult sopranos look superficial. Her rendering of O mio bambino caro was full of feeling and gave me goosebumps. It is amazing that a 9 year old child has such a beautiful voice. How much more amazing will she be when she matures in age and has benefit of a singing teacher. I love her voice and listen to this over and over. I am seeing comparisons between Amira and Jackie Evancho. They are both extremely talented children and to compare their talents is like comparing apples and oranges. Jackie's voice is deeper and not appealing to my ears (I like soprano) but she is talented none the less. In other words, they should not be compared to each other but congratulated for their talents.

it is Christmas 2018, and I just finished listening to Amira's Christmas album. I suggest someone send a copy to Jackie, and let her know how great her main competition sounds like at age 11. For a 100% novice this is astonishing. That voice so rich with tone, even those high notes clear and solid, and where on earth does that power come from such a tiny body????? Not only is she very young, she has a small skinny body. And of course like ALL singers almost all their life she will need to work on voice protection, voice control, breathing, musicianship etc. And for a little body maintaining stamina and perfect control in all registers will be something that has to be learned. Pavarotti learned his breathing by being on tour with Sutherland when he was already a young professional singer. ANYWAY she has a REAL feel for the music, and gave it a wonderful rendition here all the way through, she held it all together, a very tough job.

Almost unbelievably, she's BETTER now. At 9 and with no training, the guileless purity of her voice overcame the stilted phrasing, muddy diction and lack of breath control - you don't get that from KZbin. At 15 and almost all grown up, coaching has given her the breath support for her contralto register without losing the coloratura top notes, her enunciation is much clearer and her phrasing well-nigh perfect. If they don't burn her out, she'll be bigger than Matia Callas ever was.

I tremble anew --the voice ! '' Ave maria '' Iceland concert.. then '' Nessum Dorma '' HGT final ... I have kept current on her new performances these past few years.. There are many - for me - wonderful experiences listening to her sing as she has grown and performed everywhere ..BUT .. coming back to those two from the early days ..highlight how her gifted intelligence , natural physical strength and super-super gifted voice was used in her own original renditions of famous arias .. Coached now - for sure - she has been '' helped '' to professionalism along the way . That had to come. There are a few other performances that have grabbed my insides , to be sure , but after some months and relistening to those two great arias sung with great heart by early Amira stuns again ...the voice with heart -- not her age - combined with her uncoached originality '' will belong always to the operitic ages '' .. Lyrics? the voice.. I TREMBLED anew as i listened..

We've seen someone who I believe is one of the best singers in the world cutting her teeth (she's so young she's still losing her baby teeth, . . . . tooth 24 is missing!!) on Opera . . . . Opera . . . . . and competing with three of the toughest songs huh? And we have her on film . . . .LIVE !! . . . . .NO, she's not perfect yet, but SO many moments of brilliance, pure talent. . . . . Then we hear 'Song to the Moon' a song perhaps more suited to her . . . . .WOW. I am ecstatic!!

I'm fascinated by the fact that her mouth shape is so good, not making the mistake of pulling her mouth wide, which often happens with young singers, so the sound has no harshness.Note when she sings words like "principessa", luce, splendero. Was she taught to do that, or did she watch and learn from videos? That is very good control and it is impressive, especially as she has such a wide, infectious grin!

Up to and including the Audition she was totally self taught off of KZbin. After that her parents did get her a coach and HGT also helped her but that would be only 2 months of outside intervention. I believe it would be safe to say that she learned it herself. She has an interview at home where her parents say they left her to learn on her own as they are musicians and not singers. Amira is a very remarkable young lady. Have you gone to her Google page and watched her latest performance? It is in HD as well complete with interviews.

Gerald Weg Thanks for that info - it is what I thought, but it seems remarkable that she has through even the first audition, been aware of the importance of mouth shape to keep the sound so good; that was very observant and intelligent of her. I will certainly visit her google page, and in the meantime I hope I can find her cd down here in New Zealand - one for us, one for my sister. BTW, my knowledge of German has made listening to the dialogue interesting, some of it being quite understandable, some words being quite different. Enlightening exercise. Thanks again.

Raymond Daubney Her eyes are huge, like Japanese manga girls - so pretty. And the way she stands there, eyes closed, hands together as if praying at the chorus part - That's something that usually only comes after years of experience. But Amira seems to be doing this by instinct. Or, (I'm an atheist) with the guidance of God. I also love the war all the judges are open-mouthed and spellbound. That's a VERY rare sight! I know about addiction, so I am glad this is your only one. Apart from tobacco, it's now also my only one as well. Long life, friend.

Tom Foyle Yes Tom, I regard my self at times an Atheist but then I witness scene's like this. I think the judge who said an old soul hit it on the head or possession , but not by a demon . May be that Angel's are being sent back to try and lead us back on the correct path. You know, I have had some insights over the last few years. I used to roll my own fag's, I did from 15 to 50 and smoked 5 packets a fortnight.. I developed Angina and type 2 diabeties . On the closing day of the Sydney Olympics I was rushed to hospital. I lay there and couldn't sneek off some where to have a smoke so I thought that I had no choice but to quit. My friend's & family all way's laughed out loud when ever I would mention giving it up. You know what? It was so bloody easy, I have been kicking my self for 14 years for not doing it so long ago. They didn't think the op would be a success but I came through. And do I breath so much better? nope, they parralyzed the left side of my diaphram so now I breath with only one lung. But do try, I think the addiction was all in my head. Good luck.

Is it truly a Miracle ?? when interviewed for Television she Said that she had Learned the songs through Listening to Gramma Phone Records of None other than Maria Callas; By Listening to a Record time after Time; She Might Be able to Mimic Maria Callas' Voice but she would not be able to Understand what she was singing {Further More there was No deviation from the Actual Record of Maria Callas} what I Have seen in Real life within Children and adults I Have seen True Possession: I saw something happen to Amira that No One Has Latched on to and that was a Brief twinkle of a transfiguration within her Eye I Believe that Child was Maria Callas and it is through this she has been Made famous she sometimes sings in English but something is not Right and Yet I Have to admit I Love Her But in a Creepy way; I Might as well own up to the Truth and tell you; that throughout My Childhood Days I Have Been able to Speak Many Languages where I Have Been Understood But Yet I never understood to what I Said and this is what I Based my Theory upon
