Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this funeral via video. I am a minister of a small non-denominational church here in the cornfields of Illinois. I appreciate the message - one like I would give - and the message in the congregational singing! God bless you and your family!

Otherwise the amish do not appreciate photographers taking their photos just so you know." The entire family of God is my family. Hence, thank you for taking this video and blessings to you.

After watching awhile and seeing the grave service, I finally realized that this was the funeral for Bertha who married my Gross Dawdi John Yoder after the death of my grandma. I have watched it a number of times now and am so thankful that you shared. I see many relatives from my mother and father's families. I figured out after talking with my mother, that she and your mother are 1st cousins. What a small world.

S Nafziger your name threw me off but when you said Petershiem that changed everything! Wow! Now you are making me curious you say the Oakland Maryland Church is no longer considered Old Order Amish? When did this all come about? I myself was raised Amish till turned nine years old when my folks joined the Amish Mennonite car church.

kay jay You are partly right and mostly wrong the Amish are just like any other protestant group in that there are the STRICT AMISH, Moderate Amish and Conservative Amish. This group is both! But if you really want to know you should become a part of the Amish it would be an enlightenment for you!

kay jay The Amish I grew up with will except anyone who conforms to their strict dress code race is a none issue. I know you say you don't believe in Gods but there is only one living God and unless you gave yourself life you will go back to the God that created you! What's worse the bible states it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God! It would seem such a shame for that to happen to a nice person like you!

A man named Jim Shaw renounced freemasonry. He published the date when each cardinal in the 1950s was initiated into grand orient freemasonry. They took over the papacy in the election of 1958 by coercion. You can learn about this online I'll not try to find it for you. One of the best series has the word "imposter" in it and gives many details and testimonies of those involved.

I was moved by watching this. I remember at the funeral of a member of the church where I attend was put to rest in the church columbarium (it's like a cemetery but the ashes are put in niches) the final words of the minister was "Alleluia Christ is risen" and we responded "The Lord is risen indeed Alleluia!) it was the first time I felt joy at a funeral. Although there was sadness the hope of being a Christian really hit home. May the family of this person who passed feel the same joy and hope which the resurrection of Christ brings ti this who believe.

And their kids know how to work and make their own way. Higher education doesn't seem to be paying off nowadays, exorbitantly expensive, no related job after graduation, mountain of student loan debt. I'll wager these Amish kids can read and do arithmetic in circles around the average HS grad, and earn a living in the process.

You do realize the Amish are self-sustaining, right? If we lost electrical power for 6 months, could you survive? The Amish would be perfectly fine. Also, almost every Amish home and farm I've seen are beautiful and kept up meticulously. I'm college educated and know I would NOT be fine through a 6 month electrical outage and my home is nowhere as nice as many of theirs. I think they're much more intelligent than most of us.

First of all had this been a normal service I would not have been allowed to film it! But in a normal service they have segregated seating,all german preaching and singing.The main reason for the exception is out of respect for those out of the area and out of state visitors who cannot understand german.

Sure no problem! The Amish do not use a concrete vault instead, the coffin is made of Pine and set inside a ruff box which is installed when the grave is dug.After the pine coffin has been placed the last thing they have to do before closing up the hole with dirt is lay the wood slats on top of the ruff box to keep dirt off the coffin.

Here are the answers to your questions,yes the body is embalmed by a licensed professional,yes there is a viewing,No there is no wake or ritual,the clothes are a matter of choice by either the deceased or the family within the Amish standard,yes there is an Amish Undertaker who works in conjunction with a Licensed Mortician.

If I may, I have a few questions to ask - what is done to the person after they have died (Special washing, embalming)? Is there a "Viewing" held before the funeral/burial to see the deceased one more time? Is there a "Wake", or mourning time/ritual? Are there special clothes the deceased wears? Is there an Amish Undertaker" in each community?

Do the Amish in Canada have their own burial grounds/cemeteries or are they buried in same cemeteries as non amish folks. I always assumed they just had family plots on their own land. I heard a story about an amish family buying a farm here and there was an old non amish family cemetery on the land. The amish people removed the head stones, used them for steps and used the land as grazing pasture.

This sure DOES NOT represent the Amish in Canada. Canadian OLD Amish would never meet in a building like this for any church service. They meet strictly in each other homes. And would Never under any circumstance allow a camera anywhere near them and they do NOT sing in English but their Pennsylvanian Dutch. How do I know mt father lives amongst the amish, the on English welcome as a hard workjer in the mill.

+Simon Kinsinger (Mountain Reigns) It is described as the new "Old Order Amish Church" near Oakland Maryland. Nowher was it described as being Mennonite -- I am aware of the difference. Old Order Amish have services in their homes. I too am surprised by this, as Old Order Amish do not have churches, and would certainly never have allowed a camera at any services of any kind -- very puzzling. I also don't think Old Order Amish sing these kinds of hymns at their services.

+Pam Hannam I question your statement why are you so sure Old order Amish do not have churches? My father grew up Old Order Amish in Somerset County Pa.they met in a church building. my mother on the other hand grew up Old Order Amish in Belleville,Pa. they had services in their houses and barns. I grew up amish till I was eight years old in Stuarts Draft,Va. So by what authority,are you speaking from? Is it from a book you read your own experiences or something you heard someone else say?

Simon, sir ... I have a question. Are you aware that many Amish are leaving the communities because they believe they only need to place their faith in Christ and need only the scriptures to guide their lives by? They believe the elders that control things are unnecessary because Jesus guides people's lives with the His Word and the Holy Spirit. If they have a Pastor and church to worship in, why would they be shunned for leaving? How say you about this?
@bobyriverside
@bobyriverside 8 жыл бұрын
I don't claim any authority on these matters. I am fortunate to know a number of Amish families, some of whom have shared Amish history with me. I am aware that of the Old Order Amish who had broken with those in Lancaster County, many ultimately became part of an Old Order in Somerset County which broke off further between the traditional old Amish and the Beachy Amish. I didn't think of Beachy as Old Order -- a progressive old order, I guess -- but perhaps they are considered old order.. One of the distinguishing features of the Beachy Amish in Somerset County was holding church services in a church building rather than in homes. I see that you come from the Somerset County so I'm assuming you may have grown up in the progressive Beachy Amish culture. Of course, now there are Beachy Amish worldwide, with congregations that meet in church buildings. Additionally, I know that some Old Order groups started meeting in church buildings as early as the 19th century, but some members of those groups separated and reverted back to meeting in homes. To my knowledge, none of them, however, would have looked kindly upon being photographed. However, I learned most of my history from my Amish friends, all of whom are Lancaster County Old Order. Later, I read books on the same subject -- but I don't claim authoritative or comprehensive knowledge on any of these subjects. I just had not personally known any Old Order Amish who worshipped in church buildings.

How do you become Amish? Why aren't there any black Amish?

I heard there are some black Amish, but they're mostly adopted into households. For Mennonites, however, some families have mixed children (black and white).

I agree, it is hard enough to grieve the loss of a life, but it is taken care of so quickly, its very final. But really, there is no "chance" for the person who passed away. They are asleep in death.

wHAT SONGS DO aMISH YOUTH SING WHEN THEY GATHER FOR HYMN SINGS?
@SimonKinsingerMountainReigns
@SimonKinsingerMountainReigns 8 жыл бұрын
+Rebecca Meister I can only talk from my own experience but as an Amish Youth growing up for Sunday evening Hymn Sings we would sing from the German songbooks for the first half and then switch to the English Hymn Books for the last half, Church & Sunday School Hymnal, Church Hymnal, Christian Hymnal, and the Christian Hymnary which was used a lot more in later years because it had over 1000 hymns to select from and covered both German and English songs and hymns.

Is there a significance to singing the same songs from one language to another? Why not just English, or just German? Wouldn't it be most important the songs are sung from the heart, rather than being concerned with language? Or am i missing something?

Having lived near Amish growing up, those that I have encountered did not generally speak English until they were older. All the children I met all spoke the low German. Does it change from community to community?

Many of these relatives in the video are mine. They are a more progressive church in Oakland. From what I would understand is that singing in German is to still hold on to traditions that have been passed down for centuries.

I thought the Amish cult had forbidden any form of photography??
@rockman4952
@rockman4952 8 жыл бұрын
They don't want photos of their faces,. although some tolerate English people taking photos of their faces,. since that photo would not be the property of the Amish person. When the English possess the photo, then the English is violating the commandment prohibition of graven images.
