This is part 2 of a 6 part video series explaining how I installed a metal roof on my house. In this part I cover prepping the roof, installing the trim, and installing the vapor barrier underlayment.
The metal I'm using is called "crinkle black"
I purchased all my materials at buckeyemetalroofing.com/
They are a local company. Google "metal roofing supplier" to find one in your area.
The buble-wrap underlayment I used is Rfoil 2500. It can be found here rfoil.com/insulation-product/...
The dektite roof boot can be found here www.ebay.com/i/152760533811?r...
The Fabral vented foam closure can be found here www.homedepot.com/p/Fabral-36...

Best videos I've seen on the subject. Thank you. One question. Is there any concern about moisture getting trapped between the vapor barrier and metal?
@MT_Homes

Thank you! Short answer is no. The purpose of the vapor barrier is to prevent moisture from happening at all. I’ve been using bubble wrap for years with no issues.

Great roof install, I'm about to do my home it's 28 sq ranch style and wondering how long it took you to do the install on a roof that size and was just just the two of you. Also that shinny wrap you use I was thinking of using it over shingles, is it made as strong as the synthetic rolls just wondering since it looks just like bubble wrap plastic and wondering on how long it will last on a hot roof long term?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It took us 4 days total I believe. I’ve been using bubble wrap for years and have not had any problems with it. Although my father-in-law has an open pole barn that has bubble wrap underlayment and where it is exposed on the underside, the white backing is flaking off. Not sure if birds are picking at it or if it’s degrading. I should mention that not all bubble wrap is created equally. He got that from a different company. I understand your concern where it’s plastic and could melt but I have not seen that happen. The only problem with using synthetic felt is that I’m not sure it’s thick enough to keep the stones in the shingles from poking through and scratching the paint on the backside of the metal. Good luck!

I love the videos and truly appreciate it but I have a question for you...my plywood is delaminating would you replace that or would you just put the metal right over the existing roof?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 жыл бұрын
My rule of thumb is if the roof decking is solid and I can tighten a screw down without stripping it out I leave it and lay the metal over it. If it is spongy or rotted I replace it. Delamination usually doesn’t affect a screw tightening down providing the layers are still solid and will lay flat. Thanks for watching!

This is the company I purchase all my metal products from including trim, screws, foam closures, caulking, bubble wrap underlayment, and roof boots. You can check their website for the brands they carry. buckeyemetalroofing.com/ As far as the tools, I normally use DeWalt drills, drill bits, and nut drivers for the screws. As far as hand tools, I really like Stanley/Fatmax lineup. In this video I’m using their tape measure, chalk line, snips and levels. My favorite hammer (although pricey) is a Stiletto. Thanks for watching! Good luck!

I notice that before you cut the shingle overhang by the gutters, the gutters are attached. After you cut the overhang, the gutters are removed. Do the gutters need to be removed for metal roof installation? Great info so far. Need to watch all of them. Thanks for the effort you put in to making these.
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Roger! I appreciate that you recognize the work that went into making these videos. The gutters do not have to be removed to install a metal roof. But If you are replacing the gutters I would remove them before installing the new drip edge. Which is what I did on this project. Thanks for watching!

I noticed there's a Gable end vent in this attic space (6:05 in the video). I thought you couldn't put a ridge cap vent when you have those because it creates a cross flow cancellation. Is that true?

Do you always have to put the vapor barrier on after the flashing and drip edge or can you do it before? What would be a benefit for a downfall?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 жыл бұрын
The vapor barrier can come loose, or get slick at times when walking on it too much so I prefer no to walk on it anymore than I have to. Especially at the eave. Also, if any condensation occurred between the barrier and the metal, it would run out over top of the drip edge instead of underneath.

I was just wondering when using the rfoil wrap over the entire roof. Do the homeowners ever complain of poor cell phone signals? I would like to do this method too, but worried about poor signals for the cell phones and internet. Thx, keep up the great work.
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 3 жыл бұрын
I installed it on my roof several years go and didn’t notice any difference in cell signal. Also have never had a complaint of customers losing cell signal after a roof install. I don’t know exactly how cell signals work but I would think the metal would deflect the signal as much as anything, so I doubt the bubble wrap underneath would have any additional affect as it is non-metallic.

I was reading rFoil's website and in the brochure for their product they recommended putting batting strips on top of the bubble wrap. They said it greatly increases the r value. I live in Maine and wonder if applying the roofing directly to the bubble wrap will impact the insulative value of the wrap? I do not want to put batting strips down as walking on metal roofing using this method will damage the panels after they're installed. I do not want to lose access to my roof just because I chose to install a metal roof. I have a stick built house with shingles that are prematurely curling up and is shedding the aggregate, I also have ice build up issues in the wintertime. So heat loss is a concern. Your recommendatons?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 жыл бұрын
I can see how an air gap would help the R-value but I prefer to use it like I did in the video. I use the bubblewrap for 2 reasons. 1 it works as a vapor barrier and is thick enough to keep the metal from making contact with the shingles. 2 the reflective upper side reflects a lot of heat in the summer time. Those two are more important to me than r-value. As far as heat loss it’s not the roof decking’s job to hold heat in the wintertime. Your attic should be well ventilated so it will get cold no matter how well the roof decking gets insulated. To prevent heat loss focus on the ceiling insulation itself. Adding 6” of blown insulation can be pretty effective. Thanks for watching!

Did you place the metal roof over the shingles because is cheaper or because is better? I about to do my roof, currently I have shingles with no leaks, I was thinking to take the shingles off but no sure.. please help me ..thank you
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 жыл бұрын
I leave the shingles on because it is easier, cheaper and way less mess. It also helps deaden the sound of rain on your metal roof if you prefer that. If your roof has more than 1 layer of shingles I would definitely tear off as you get into a weight issue. With that said I think it’s always better to tear off but not sure it justifies the extra expense and labor you will have in it by tearing it off.

Can I put the vapor barrier over a spot of sheathing without shingles on it? I have a few rotten spots on the roof that the sheathing needs to be replaced but I don’t want to remove the shingles from the rest of the roof. So I would be putting the vapor barrier over shingles and in some areas over bare sheathing, is this going to show through in the finished product?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 5 жыл бұрын
I would definitely recommend laying something on the bare spots to bring it up to level. There’s a strong chance you will notice the dip if you just go over it. If you’re using bubble wrap like I did you might be able to lay 2-3 layers in the bare spots although it will feel spongy. Obviously the best choice would be to get some shingles and re lay what you had to remove.

What is done to stop the metal from rusting where you make cuts? Such as end cuts and opening for vents and pipes?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 жыл бұрын
Not sure to be honest with ya. None of the end cuts made at the factory are painted and they don’t rust either. May be some kind of coating. Now I have seen metal rust if it has been cut with a grinder or circular saw.

Can I put on the shingles synthetic roofing underlayment and then the metal sheet?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 5 жыл бұрын
I have not tried synthetic underlayment over shingles so I’m unsure of whether it would prevent the stones on the shingles from scratching the back side of the metal as it expands/contracts. That would be my only concern. But it would definitely be much better than not using anything at all. Thanks for watching!

If you are installing a new metal roof I would discard the turbines. They are not designed for a metal roof and could potentially leak. They also don’t work near as well as a full length ridge vent.

Does it matter if your vapor barrier is under your ridge cap?
@MT_Homes
@MT_Homes 4 жыл бұрын
If you are venting the ridge like I did here you want your vapor barrier to stop where I cut the ridge open in order to leave at least a 1 1/2” to 2” gap for air flow from the attic. If you are not venting your ridge then you can run the vapor barrier across the ridge. I would never recommend not venting a ridge unless the sides of the building are open. Thanks for watching!
