The thing with the mcdonalds case is that they were knowingly serving coffee that was legitimately too hot. They handed her a coffee cup with a lid that wasnt fully secured. So when it spilled, it burned her skin, specifically in her private area and gave her 3rd degree burns.
@beirirangu

The temperature of the coffee when they were serving it was almost 200 F (90 C) , she got 3rd degree burns over most of her thighs (her legs were literally fused together when she got to the hospital) , and in the lawsuit she ONLY asked for her medical bills be paid for, but the McDonalds lawyers REFUSED to budge from a REDICULOUSLY small $800 settlement

3rd degree means there's no skin left on the contact point. I don't think 90 celsius water is enough causing it. Water needs 100 celsius degrees to boil.

@@Resegy "Hot enough to boil" and "hot enough to cause 3rd degree burns" are two different things. Even water as low in temperature as 50 degrees Celsius can cause 3rd degree burns if the skin is left exposed to it for a few minutes.

McDonald's coffee lady is actually a pretty intense story apparently she even had to go to the hospital to get reconstructive surgery for her legs and genitalia. And McDonald's just tried to send her a coupon and some money and she really wanted was for them to cover her medical bills that's all but they forced her to go to court. They dragged her name through the mud afterwards to try and stop people from doing it again and what's worse was she was a little old lady so imagine that was your grandma would you let McDonald's do that to your Grammy. Roommate one was an idiot simple as that first of all your banging your roommate's boyfriend that's messed up and second if just kept her mouth shut and didn't call her parents nobody would have found out because the OP didn't even know who the boyfriend was

The first story is so common in Australia: particularly among the baby boomer generation. I've soaked the cup in boiling water for a minute or so, then made the coffee. At which point, it is "perfect" then approximately 27-30 napkins are wrapped around the coffee cup because it is too hot to pick up. This way you can slowly sip on the coffee for the next 80-90 minutes.

What you left out of the McDonald's case is that where the coffee spilled on her, which was her thighs and groin gave her third degree burns. Her skin melted off, and she needed skin grafting and 16% of her body was considered burned. The temperature coffee or any liquid needs to be in order to cause instant third degree burns is 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Mcdonald's was known to keep their coffee at a temperature of 190 degrees and ignored hundreds of reports of coffee burns before this woman spilled the coffee on her.

So happy for the siblings in the last story. It is so sad that you can’t rely on your parents, but so glad they had and have each other. My mom and dad were in a car accident when I was 6, my mom died and my dad was a closed head injury, who was in the hospital for about two years. We were blessed to have aunts and uncles care enough to help watch over us. There were 6 of us kids.

I am so very sorry for the loss of your mom, Diane. My dad passed away at 43 and left my 39 year old mother a widow with 7 kids. We lived in the country (no red lights, just a small store, gas station, bar and lots of farms) and I remember the man who owned the store coming to our house with bags and boxes of food for us (I was 10). That man made an impact on my life that he never imagined. Many years later I sent him a Christmas card with a photo of my children and a letter explaining the difference he made in my life. When he saw one of my brothers he told him the letter made him cry and he didn’t even remember bringing all that food. Twenty five years later another brother passed away unexpectedly and this man, John, came to the wake. I knew him right away and introduced him to my now-grown “kids”. All their lives they knew we all had to give back to our community in some fashion and were glad to meet the man I always spoke so highly of. Whether you have money or not, there’s always some way you can give to your community.

I had a somewhat similar experience as the last story, but it wasn't as intense. I grew up with divorced parents, and I also had developmental issues. My counsilers would constantly say that I would never be able to hold down a job and live on my own, and my mom would always treat me as if I was a burden. If she was picking me up for the weekend, I had to be out that door as soon as she pulled up in the driveway, otherwise I'd get an earful about keeping her waiting. She'd make so many comments that implied I was a burden to her and everyone else around me. On the other hand, my dad always encouraged me to be better than what was expected of me. He encouraged me to work hard, and do my best, even when everyone else told me I couldn't do something. Because of this, I grew up believing that I was a burden if I asked anyone for help, and that I had to do everything on my own to make sure I didn't put that burden on anyone, and to show that my dad was right about me being capable of taking care of myself. This got to the point where I wouldn't ask for help, even when I needed it. Eventually, I was able to get a job at Steak n Shake, and started making enough to be able to afford a small apartment and move out. I couldn't afford a car, just barely the apartment and food, but work was only a 20 minute walk away from home, so I did that. Even in the rain or snow, I would walk. My co-workers would sometimes offer to give me rides, but it was a fight at first to get me to accept the help. After a while of them insisting on trying to help me, they were able to show me that I wasn't a burden, and that I was allowed to accept help when needed. Eventually, I was able to even bring myself to ask people for rides, if I knew it wasn't out of the way and the weather was bad. I still make sure to watch myself, because I don't want to let myself become an entitled Karen who expects everyone to bend over backwards to do me favors, but I can at least ask people for favors now if I don't think it will be an issue for them.

@kage2670

Actually, she was an older lady, so skin probably more fragile, and if hot liquid is on clothes and not promtly removed it can worsen the degree of injury, also any sort of emotionally or physical pain has the potential to cause shock, it depends on the situation and person and how they mentally handle the pain. This being said, she only wanted her medical bills to be paid for, and mcdonalds where d*cks about it. It is indeed a complicated story, and also the staff serving the drink had nothing to do with the following response and consequential lawsuit, corporations are often messy and complicated.
@vergorance

@@kage2670 actually, regardless of age coffee should never reach a temperature of 90c. mcdonald's serves coffee which should be fit for consumption, 90c is definitely not fit for consumption. also she had 3rd degree burns, that's why she went into shock, not because she was literally shocked but rather because she had 3rd degree burns(really painful)

Story 1: That Karen either can't sense heat at all, or was trying to scam free stuff... I think its the latter. I had a similar experience, only with soup/chowder. We had an old lady who had a bowl of chowder that constantly complained that it was "too cold". On the 3rd re-send, my cook co-worker took 2 bowls worth into a frying pan and heated it to the point where it was almost on fire and when he tried to check the tep with a spoon, he physically couldn't get the spoon to his mouth because it was the hot, and it was taken out to the lady right away, and she immediately tried to send it back because it was "still too cold". Story 2: The OP and the call manager are awesome here.... and congrats on keeping your cool too. The guy on the phone was a complete moron and got what he asked for.... quite literally. Glad he was hit with a lifetime ban too. A good lesson on paying your bills on time too. Story 3: Definitely not the jerk. The OP owns the condo and lets the daughter live there (along with roomies), and OP told the daughter ahead of time, so she's in the clear there. If the other roomie forgot, then thats on them. Next time though, leave a note or something... having stuff in writing will save your butt in the long run. Story 4: I love hearing stories from both sides. Okay, the mom here isn't the biggest jerk ive seen, but i think she is after hearing the nanny's side. I understand wanting a dress code, it's fair really, but it moreso sounds like a "you cant tempt my husband/son with your attire" attitude from the mom. The babysitter is there to work, not hit on the husband. Story 5: I just saw this story on FB just the other day. I feel bad for the sisters' home situations, but it's great that they bonded so well together.

(Reaction to the first story) I experienced something like this. it was my second day at the window making the orders, handling the cash, and giving them their orders. These two guys ordered some coffees and I made them specifically to their order and gave them it. They left without a word and I continued as normal. It was about four hours later when they came through the drive thru, saying the coffees were “undrinkable” and I had to make then two new ones, despite the fact that the coffees were basically empty as they had drank it. They got two new coffees free of charge, as per the policy of “the costumer is the main priority.” My supervisor wasn’t there for the first time but was there the second time. They leave and drive off again, then come back AGAIN, threeish hours later, within the last hour of my shift. These guys ignore the microphone box thing outside and drove right up to the window, threw two half empty coffee cups at me, splattering my uniform with coffee, and yelled at me for being “an moronic f### a#######!” And to make a coffee the correct way and then demanding that I get them other things on the menu for free as per them having to come back so much, and my supervisor lost it. He screamed at them. my supervisor made up two coffees and then threw them at the driver in retaliation for them assaulting me, and wrote down their cars lisence plates at they drove off in a panic, as they have probably planned to manipulate me thinking I was alone (it’s a small restaurant.) he asked if I wanted him to call the cops and I said no, saying that I thing having scalding hot coffee on your entire body was likely enough punishment. He poured cold coffee over me and got hot coffee in return, a fair trade I assume.

It took up 10 minutes every week and turned customers away. Another time the woman shouted at the owners son who is autistic and was 10. I was the only one working that day apart from the owner( amazing person and best boss ever btw) who was out back. This woman shouted at him and I heard it. She cussed at him for petting her dog. I went on to charge her for her half drunken coffee and said” get the fuck out “ although I was later made to have a time out for 5 minutes to cool off, the owner banned them for life and thanked me. Guess who got a bonus. I had shouted my line at her and bear in mind this was the busiest day of our week and there were no free tables, and everyone stopped and she left with her husband. They guy then apologised and left a £50 tip.

The McDonald’s burn case was actually really bad. The lady had really severe burns because the coffee was legitimately hotter than it should have been, and the lid wasn’t on right. Imagine having boiling water poured on your lap while you’re in a car. With the wall next to you keeping you from getting out right away you’ll get pretty jacked. More so as time goes on.

The daughter's roommate in the condo was just being petty that doesn't apply if there was an agreement in advance. I can't ask my landlord to do something in my apartment and then complain that they didn't give me enough notice when I asked them to.

Are you sane 🤨 Story 5: Aw, what an awesome sister. I'm so happy your life ended up so much better. Stories 1 (the op, the manager is trash), 2, 3, and 5 are not the jerks. Story 4 is the jerk.

Ok, on the McDonald's coffee lawsuit. It was an elderly lady, the lid wasn't well placed, and she got 2nd degree burns on her lap. Her grandchild was trying to get McDonald's to pay for the medical bills and they refused. Eventually they found out that there were a handful of customers with burnt marks caused by McDonald's coffee, and that's why the penalty was so high. They were accused of negligence and reckless behavior. The reason why we remembered this as a Karen situation, is because they spent a bunch of money on propaganda making fun of the situation, so people wouldn't try to sue them again for something else. It's kind of sad that this case has been so belittle when second degree burns hurt more than third degree, because your nerves are still functioning, so you feel the pain on every spot in your body

3rd story: i heard it so many time but ... i still state she didn't went in as a landlord but as the mother. She also said she knock the door to see if anyone was still there (that was state in the comments by OP), since she didn't barge in at all other than open it with her own key. And on top she didn't know who the guy was at all either, and didn't even know if was her or Roomate's 2 bf. Roommate 1 was so preoccupied she spill the bean to stop thinking it was more better if she was with him in one of the rooms. Now knowing OP knock on the door previously and Roommate 1 "forgot" she will came ... because i believe she didn't ... Roommate 1 probably took that moment to do the deed with roommate 2's bf before OP came to drop that for her daughter. So the moment OP knock on the door, Roommate 1 and the guy had all the time to get out from there. BUT instead she play it as if "nobody was there", believing OP didn't had the keys from the place". But in the end OP has keys of the place and find them like that. And even if she didn't spill the beans, she will eventually see Roommate 2's bf and ask how him and Roommate 1 is .... spilling the beans eventually ...

My opinion on whether it is alright to enter someone else's house. As long as someone who lives in the house says it is alright then it is alright. If a second resident says you have to leave then you have to leave. I believe it should be trespassing if you return. I had quite a few problems with my sisters friends stealing things, mouthing off as well as a few of my brothers friends causing problems which is why I take this stance.

Last story.... When I was in middle school I was a "coach" for the special needs kids in my gym class. My dad had just died and I was in a rough place. One of the kids said something about dropping out of school when he was old enough and I told him that if I found out that he did that I would kick his butt. Years later we ran into each other and he told me that I was the reason that he not only finished highschool but went to college because he was worried that I would find out and follow through with what I had told him I would do. Personally I didn't even remember saying that to him.

"Am I a jerk for having expectations" Yes, if that woman is so worried about her son (less than 5) and husband looking at a woman in normal 'tight' clothes. I think she needs to get a more loyal man who isn't a perv and teach her son not to look at women like
