To be honest, if I was blind and a child came up to me and kindly asked to pet my guide dog, I would let them but really carefully, and then tell them that most other people wouldn’t let them pet their service dogs. Edit: unless it’s illegal

First story: I know someone personally who is legally blind, her eyes aren’t cloudy or fogged over as some folks think, she’s really nice and when I lived in South Dakota, the last day of me being in Special Olympics, my Mom and I were trying to explain to a kid in a polite way that he couldn’t pet her service dog, he didn’t think of it as polite and started crying

⁠@@mickk8519 exactly, as a child, I always had and loved dogs, I saw a service dog once with a little vest, and asked why the dog had clothes and if I could pet it, and the person explained that no, I couldn’t pet it, it was a service dog, and they were also blind, so they needed the dog to help them see, and that animals with vests were most likely service animals, to help people, I didn’t throw a fit, or go snitch to my mom that someone didn’t let me touch their dog, I was just happy to see a dog with a job like a police dog, so I connected the dots to my german shepherd and followed the person around talking about my german shepherd until my mom came and told me to stop bothering the poor person. I was a smart kid, but not the most socially aware, specially about disabled people, like the time I first saw a little person and asked “why that little girl had an old lady face” and where her parents were. My mom was embarrassed, told me off, and told me that she was an adult. The lady explained what midgets were (I don’t know if that’s an offensive term, sorry if it is) I’ve had ridiculous experiences with random disabled people as a child because I didn’t see many of them

thank you - the whole situation should have been handled differently regardless if the OP was blind or not. The dog was not the Karen's property and she was harassing another customer. Also, it is actually illegal for an establishment to ask you to prove your disability the way the security did. The only thing the OP would need to do is show the documentation of the dog being a seeing eye dog - otherwise the customer could sue for discrimination.

For the 2nd story, I think it's important to realize that having a positive relationship with an ex is an ok and honesty a good sign of maturity on both ends. Positive doesn't mean potentially romantic, but if your partner is capable of being friends with an ex it shows that they were willing to take a step back and look at the relationship and see that it wasn't working out the way it was. It's ok to like someone but realize you might not be the best romantic partners for each other

When he said he's not going to tell her things if he thinks it will upset her or if he thinks she'll overreact, that right there is a red flag. If you're in a healthy relationship, you should be able to have mature conversations about things that are difficult for each other to hear. To just withhold that information because you might not like my reaction is a justifiable reason for me to seek companionship with someone who I can trust to tell me the truth, even if it's hard to hear.

I completely agree, but I think a relationship with an ex needs to be completely open and COMPLETELY platonic when there’s a new person in your life. I mean, I’ve been friends with my bfs exes, but it was because he was completely open about it. They never hung out without me and he never lied about whether she’d call, text, or wanna hang out and she always invited me and never made me feel left out. I think it’s possible, but there has to be a lot of open communication and boundaries. In this case, he was point blank lying to her about his ex’s contact. That’s sus to me.

And even if the dog wasn't a service dog, since when do dog owners have to let other people pet their dogs just because you say so? If the owner said no, then it's no. I really hope the OP files a complaint and gets the first security guard fired. Karen will be a Karen, but that guy messed up big time. Who cares if she's blind or not? You're helping a Karen harass a customer!

I'm a bit more sympathetic to the Security Guard as it sounds like he was just really confused and you could tell from what they said clearly realized the stupidity of what they was asking and tried to establish why the Karen was accusing them of faking it, hell they might be new to the job they still human they can get confused and having to make a decision on the spot not be sure how to react

I teach my kids this! It's common sense. You always ask before petting any animal! Also, walk slowly up to the dog with your hand out. You go like 95% and then let the dog come up to you the rest of the way.

@BlackLivesMatter in my experience kids usually isent judgemental in the way adults can be.... yes...kid can be cruel to eachoter without knowing or understanding thay are from the sandbox and upp...takings another kids toy and banging it on the head or something... (it takes a a few years until a kid fully understand its hurts for another person if u do)... being rhought right from wrong early is a very very good start in life.... for example teaching kids thay cant go around taking other kids toys without asking... if u do early the future will be alot brighter for that child... there are parents especially in US thats think its okay to kids to take other kids toys and use them... it teaches its okay to take and use other ppls stuff and should never be used as any method... ...but its clear the kid understood better... ...from herself, other ppl around her, school...

I think you handled the situation very well, I would have lost patience long before that. There needs to be more awareness of disabilities and parents should teach children appropriate behaviour towards a person with a disability and people generally. Depends on the place. The first guard should've called backup to keep the situation clear and local police if their contract doesn't allow contact. He also cannot ask some of those questions or ask for proof. I work as mall security atm. We can only ask someone if their dog is a service animal and what job they provide. We cannot ask anything else and have to go with what we're told even if we have doubts. We cannot intervene and touch someone without risking our jobs, even if it's the right thing to do. They consider us as human scarecrows and any physical contact is a possible liability. Hell, I saw a coworker get chewed out for following shoplifters to the parking lot to try and catch their car once.

@@krankarvolund7771 Yeah and most attorneys won't take many cases that don't involve money. As a person with disability, I had encountered an issue with a business that was discriminating against me and wasn't wheelchair accessible but could have been. Because I wasn't asking for money but to have the business be accessible according to the laws and other things, I couldn't find an attorney who was willing to help me. Also, in order to make business to comply, the complaint has to come from a person with disabilities. Even if someone without disabilities knows the business isn't in compliant, they can't force the issue or take legal actions as it doesn't involve them directly. Most of the time people just give up because they don't have the money and there's not a lot of help for this.

I really enjoy the subtitles, as I'm deaf. Now lemme be clear, Deaf means I cannot hear right? Well some Karen was shouting at me to move my car, (which was parked correctly), so she literally yanked my arm so hard she dislocated it, so I snap my head back to see who had caused the pain, and lo behold a karen. So she is yelling and (thank the ones above I knew how to read lips) replied in the best sign language (at least the best I could with a dislocated arm.) That my car is in the right spot and these no need to move it for her to park next to her friend. All the while her child was crying at her mother shouting. So security walks in and traps my shoulder gently to alert me they are there. Now I'm at my friends coffee shop, so these people know me and that I'm deaf. I see them all yelling at each other but they were talking a bit to fast to read. The Karen left and hit into my car, but almost not damage but a scratch. Ended up having my arm popped back by security and I was given one free coffee for a family member. Like I was chilling before this happened-

I am deaf too and thankfully so far haven't run into any super Karens. I did have a minor Karen slam her shopping cart into mine because "I was ignoring her and being rude and disrespectful". Apparently she was asking me to move over so she could get through. I was already parked on the side of the aisle out of people's way and she had plenty of room to get through. But she wanted me to somehow move over even farther. With her behind me and I'm busy looking at something, of course I had no clue she was there or even talking to me. I had my hand on my cart when I felt the bang and it made me jump. She slammed her cart into mine, rudely went on about how she asked me to move and something else, then left. I usually deal with people yelling/screaming at me, pushing/pulling/yanking me, grabbing me, throwing small stuff at me, etc. The time I truly felt scared was working at one job where the security guards knew I was deaf, but would chase me down screaming at me. I am minding my own business going to work and suddenly someone is running after me screaming. They would be mad about something, but none would write/type down what they were saying so I would have no clue what I did wrong. Caused me too much anxiety.

To the one with the neighbor: I'm autistic and I often do not get subtle hints. I also might act weird sometimes and violate boundaries without even realizing it. I don't do this out of a lack of respect for other people but because social norms and subtle cues are basically rocket science to me. If people give me subtle signs I'm mostly just confused by that. What I like is when people just directly tell me when they don't like something I do. Or if they directly tell me things they would appreciate. You can be direct AND friendly at the same time. It's not a big deal. Of course it's not mentioned that the neighbor is autistic, but he might have similar issues due to his disability caused by the accident. I feel if you go from being subtle and nice straight to being direct and mean you skip a possible step in the middle: Being direct while still being nice. This is a important topic to me, because it would have helped me avoid so many misunderstandings and conflicts in the past. If people just directly tell me what's going on I can work with that. Instead they're being subtle, waiting for me to get it, bottling up their anger when I don't get and then they explode on me. And often this is the moment when I first realize that there was a problem at all. That's just frustrating for both sides.

She was pleasantly surprised when I approached her, introduced myself, and asked if she wanted to take my arm to guide her to the vehicle. She told me that many people usually grab her to take her to the vehicle. That's the wrong approach.

If you're asked to tell someone about every time someone calls you or sometimes the phone number they know it's female popping up on your phone then yes I can understand where the guys come from so there's privacy. There are other boundaries there's personal boundaries at the same time if there's a call it's saying that they want to come want you to come over to drink then yes tell your significant other. But other than that he does have right to say do you say it just say it yes I'm gonna tell you about this and yes I'm not gonna tell you about that about that now if hes going out Behind your back that's different yes you have it it's chance to talk to him about that but they're telling you everything else that's going on UN that involves them and wait in full view or involve the X that's more than just a casual meeting than yes that is concerned cheating.. I mean, i get where your coming from, but honestly, he's not trying to hide anything. She reacted when she saw him text his ex. Now, they could just be friends. I get the suspicion, and the request for honesty, but she also reacted in a way that would put any man on their heels. So when their drinking together, he receives a call and doesn't want her to worry about it. Now, if he say "no one" like she suggested, his girlfriend would have been instantly suspicious and would probably ply him with questions. The fact that he came out and told her what happened the next day, shows that he means to be honest, but he doesnt want to cause more stress for his girlfriend. A relationship is supposed to be built on trust and respect. It's a fine line either way because A. He should be honest instead of lying about what's going on (lying is not trustworthy and causes doubt), but B. He has a right to privacy a well. The problem with privacy though is that people use that a an excuse to get by with everything. If you don't trust the person you're with, then maybe that relationship isn't for you. The guy in the story is giving his gf every reason to not trust him.

@@user-jv5pl1zc3m If somebody is going blind, that means that they are not fully blind yet and may be able to see well enough to type. Also, you can get a device to type out what you say for you. Text-To-Speech and Speech-To-Text have been around for a while now. I’m very surprised that you somehow haven’t learnt about them yet. And you can also use braille to type or just memorize the keys when using a keyboard. A lot of people can type without being able to properly see the keys, and with autocorrect even if you screw up your mistakes may be automatically fixed.

I grew up in a town where they train the dogs for Leader Dogs for the blind. Everyone in town knows when the dogs are in harness you don’t mess with them at all. It’s very interesting watching them get trained and then watching again when they get paired up with their blind person. A learning experience for everyone.

I used to have a ptsd dog. Because of other people I don't go out into public with him anymore rather I go with other people as I've had way to many encounters or staff members asking to see registered paperwork. Then get asked to leave when I said there isn't any by law you can't ask.

Story 1: even if OP wasn't blind and had snuck the dog into the store, they still had the right to say who can and can't pet their dog. Fine she got caught with the dog and you called security (not ok but whatever) then up to security to decide what the next course of action would be (either escorting OP out or not) but you should never put your hands on someone else be it them or their property. As a blind person myself, I can fully relate to the first poster. I don’t have a guide dog, I instead use a smart cane, but I have still dealt with people in public who don’t understand blindness. The problem with my situation is people trying to tell me what my limits and capabilities are. I used to volunteer at a place that I will not mention, but some new people took over, and they wouldn’t let me help anymore, because they believed I couldn’t lift heavy boxes, despite the fact that I had repeatedly shown I could. I had memorized the layout of the place and could easily move the boxes, and since I was the youngest, it made it easier on everyone else. I’ve also had people tell me that I’ll never be able to live on my own, and that my family will take care of me for the rest of my life. This is despite the fact that I cook and clean for myself all the time. It bothers me that people don’t educate themselves about blindness. I’ve had people accuse me of not really being blind, even though I use a cane and Braille notetaker, basically a Braille laptop. I had incidents in school where other students would state that the only reason I got good grades is because the teachers felt sorry for me. Other students would try to trip me or steal and/or break my cane. The worst was when they would tap me on the shoulder and run away cackling like hyenas. This started in elementary school and went all the way through high school. I finally made it stop by reverse kicking one of the worst ones in the shin when he did that to me on a rainy day. I had just walked into the greenhouse, making sure my boots were covered in mud. After I kicked him, he started whining that I covered his good expensive jeans with mud. I told him that he had done it to himself. The other teens started to leave me alone when I made it clear that I perceived touching me as a threat, and that I would respond in kind. My dad and uncles taught me how to fight, and my Marine cousin gave me a few tips. Sorry, had not planned on telling that story. Parents, please teach your kids respect. I say all that to say this, please educate yourself about blindness, and don’t treat us like trash because you think you know something. You don’t understand the struggles that we can, and will deal with every day of our lives. While there is a lot of accessibility and accommodations, not every place is willing to meet those. we still have a lot we need to fight for in order to have the same treatment as everybody else. Many of the blind people I know desperately want jobs of their own, but employers will not give them a chance. A rental manager turned me away from an apartment because they didn’t think I could walk 100 yards from the curb and climb some stairs. Please don’t assume you know us, because you do not. Also, if you have a question about blindness, please just ask us. I remember several cases where curious children have been told to be quiet, and other times when adults would ask a friend or relative questions about me while I was standing right there. For the most part, most of the blind people I know are happy to answer questions about their condition. We all have different stories, and different reasons why we are blind. For instance, I am blind because of a genetic condition, while my girlfriend is blind because she was born early and there were some complications. Please take the time to get to know us, and please treat us like people.

Story 2: I think he shouldn't have worded it like "I don't want to tell you something you're going to have a bad reaction to." instead he should have just said "I just don't want to upset you when I open up. So how can I come forward and be more open without setting your anxiety up." She just wanted a boundary set up. Him then saying sure, and then lying about who is calling, is what's going to set her up for anxiety about it. But if he said "it's just my ex" didn't pick up still, to her that's seen as he's open and he cherishes there time more then the call from his ex.

For the second story honesty and open communication is the key to any relationship. You can’t not tell your partner things just because you think it will upset them. Open communication is key, this will only cause resentment to grow on both ends. I don’t know any advice that would help other than maybe getting a unbiased third party to help them work it out otherwise this will grow into a bigger issue and maybe even endanger the relationship. I really think a relationship counselor can be helpful especially since OP admitted that they overthink and that they still have some trust issues.

1st story: OP has obviously dealt with explaining her condition to other people a lot. I know blind people that don't know anything about how to describe it to others and they don't bother to. It is not their responsibility to explain their disability to others unless they put themselves in others care. The fact that she even tried to explain her situation instead of just saying "I have the permit and there is nothing illegal about faking being blind anyway" is a testament to her patience.

The ADA clearly states that the 1st security guard asking for proof that this person is blind or to provide any evidence of their disability at all is illegal, all he is allowed to ask is "What type of service does this dog provide?" Meaning is this a medical alert dog, handicap assistance, emotional support animal, disability assistance, etc. They cannot legally ask what a person's handicap or disability is and they absolutely cannot legally ask for proof of a person's need for the dog nor proof that the dog is in fact a service animal. Doing so is discrimination under the law against persons with disabilities. However, a trained service dog is not hard to spot because anything that happens around the dog or even directly to the dog the dog will ALWAYS look to the handler first before having any reaction. Even if the dog hears or sees or smells something, before it will direct its attention to it to find out what it is, it will first look to its handler. ALWAYS

But I can also see that there might be cultural differences between me and OP. I agree that you need to talk with his wife. Story #4: Girfriend you don't live with who is acting like that? Kick her to the curb. That is not behavior that you'd be able to cope with long-term and you shouldn't let her get her feet under the table. Why fire the security guard? He understood her point, immediately after her response and didn't try to make her prove it. Firing people for a social snafu is a poor way to treat your staff. Both guards later stood up for her when "Karen," grabbed her. Not everyone should be fired for being confused about how to handle a work experience.

As someone who was born with cataracts (got them removed luckily when I was a baby), and is legally blind, I absolutely HATE people like the first Karen. I know what it’s like to not even have clear vision, even with glasses because I just got surgery last Tuesday and couldn’t see well until like Friday. It’s really annoying and I don’t even wish it on people I hate. Please, if someone says they are blind just say okay and walk away. Most likely they will be faking it if their service dog is aggressive, though. So look out for that, I guess.

If the first story happened in the US, the security guard illegally asked the OP to prove they were blind. It is against the ADA for businesses to ask someone to prove they have a disability or ask what that disability is. The two questions that can be asked legally is if the dog is a service dog and what tasks does it do for the person. They can't deny access to someone having a service dog with them. The OP should have called the police and press charges when the Karen grabbed for the harness. That's like taking someone's mobility device away, like a wheelchair or a cane. I believe this would be considered as assault.

@@dragonfliesnh4204 Glad to hear it. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, look absolutely "normal" but it is a multi system hidden genetic defect of collagen. I suspect it is responsible for my wet macular degeneration, dry eyes and narrow angle glaucoma that runs back several generations in our family. I still see fine with glasses. Here in Australia Qld the police are either overworked or a bit lazy. You call to report a DV episode about a neighbour and they are like 30 questions you get asked before they'll consider coming out. Many women end up dead the next day as a result. I suspect Qlders are a bit wilder than NSW inhabitants or Victorians though. A bit like the Wild West here. There is nothing like the ADA here only an Anti-Discrimination act that covers employment and housing mainly. The best they can do is charge them with assault and theft if they turn up at all!

However, if he's in the US, that doesn't excuse him from the fact that he broke the law. The employer should make sure their staff are familiar with these laws or the employee should have gotten someone who knows what to do if they aren't sure how to handle a situation.

OK for the first story . Just because someone doesn't look disabled doesn't mean there not disabled. I myself am disabled and I for the most part look like everyone else. The only big hint to my disability is the little home made bag's keep around my neck. I was born with epilepsy but grew out of most of the symptoms but still have the bad memory. I don't need a guide dog. People are asking if she is blind how can she post the story? That has the be this generations dumbest question and this is why we need world War 3 to get rid of the trash that that lingers on Twitter. Depending upon what country you are in disabled people have a support network that normally includes family members friends fellow disabled people in there city and there support workers. As the phone part I for one didn't know about this myself but I would imagine it's like a Google talk kind of program where you talk and the phone inputs what you say. You know when you're phone randomly says say hi Google? That problem and that's on my phone and my phone was released in 2018. The last part is just like others on here said op is the owner of the dog end of story. The last part with the security should have been guard asking op if that's her dog and if she wants Karen to pet her dog . The answer is clearly its her dog and she wants to be left alone. The talk should have ended there and Karen banned. If it was me in her place it likely would have been easy to name and shame the mall and maybe go to small clames court to try to get a little justice done. Ideally the Karen deserved to be sued to the point of being homeless her croch goblin in foster care and the guard fired.

I think you should prove it to her. by putting a hot poker in both of her eyes and then she will know how blindness is like and then she can tell you how to show you that you are blind. by the way when I see somebody like you with a seeing eye dog I do want to pet the dog. but I never ask. the dog is working don't interrupt a dog when it's working. but I have smiled and winked at service dogs. and sometimes they smile and wink back.

I think the first guard in the first story just wasn't trained in how to deal with this situation. He realizes almost immediately that asking for proof of her being blind was a bad idea. It seemed more like he was trying to settle things peacefully, but didn't know how to handle the situation.

Honestly that first story, though I’m not blind I can kind of relate with my white cane. People disrespect That I have a cane all the time! It drives me mad! People step over making because they don’t want to get hit. But that’s the point so I can see you or know you’re there. And I’m gonna talk to my visual aid about people doing this and see if we can figure out how to resolve this

Why on earth do people object to canes, it's not like I'm hitting them with it, [though sometimes tempted to do so]. I've been harassed for using one because I have OA in both hips, CPPD in right knee.

In security we’re not allowed to ask deny someone services because of a service dog or ask for proof if they have the vest they’re all good.
