A lot of people say that Akira defeated Ryo in the end or he overcame his past self, but that’s not really the case here. If you read the original manga, there’s a part where Akira confronts Ryo right before they reveal they decide to go to war with each other. The same thing happens here, except there’s no dialogue. The fight isn’t over yet, it’s pretty much saying that once Akira and Ryo meet again, they’ll be enemies who’ll try to kill each other.

Once Satan has a taste of regret after killing his beloved one, god will “reset” the world again, before Satan even get a chance to know what is “love”. Unlike other timelines, in this timeline, Akira decided to not give a shit to Asuka and humanity, and leaving the world at its own. It might got reset by God anyway.

I haven’t read the manga so I’m a bit confused on the ending, since Akira crosses ryo is that before the war or after? Because he falls from the sky after fighting Amon so I’m a bit confused on how the scene switches to him being fully clothed and just walks past Ryo. So does Akira die or?

Akira won in the end in contrast to other iterations. Not just against Amon but to Satan as well. All through the power of love and forgiveness. It might have be bittersweet, horribly bittersweet, and Akira is certainly left without nothing to love, or care, but he still has the memory of Miki and the people he loved with him, and that will carry him through the future. I used to think this OVA was just torture porn shit, but now thinking about that subtext, it does an amazing and beautiful work embracing the anti-war themes from the original manga in a simple self-contained story.

Devilman is a thinking person manga and anime. You want pointless brainless friendship and forgiveness despite an enemy trying to kill you go read or watch Naruto or Fairy tail. You want a simple binge watchable comedy you go for One Piece or Gintama.

I’m not sure if you’re aware but the ending of this OVA is an interlude between Miki dying and the 20 year war that happened with Satan and the demons versus Devilmen. Akira walking past Ryo was to signify that he doesn’t forgive him and this is the beginning of war, specifically because Ryo revealed Akita’s identity to get Miki’s family killed. Ryo thought if Miki was dead that Akira would be with him. (Ryo is in love with Akira and was jealousy of Akita’s love for Miki.)

ngl I have no idea on how I feel about this adaptation. I think the crux of this latter half of Devilman can really only be pulled off through the build up that the beginning brings, but I suppose they did take a totally different approach to make it work. One thing that put me off is how empty the world felt, like after the initial riots it just seemed too quiet. Also, I don't know if any watcher who hasn't read the manga would understand the significance of certain scenes, like Miki's death, just because there wasn't that much importance to them, even if the scenes were reoccurring. And I may have a lot of criticism, but I do for like ever Devilman version, but that doesn't stop my complete fascination of this series. There's just something about the concept of demons and satan on earth, starting the apocalypse, and all the commentary it provides on war that is so captivating to me. Also, this is the most god damn extreme Akira and Amon have ever been, as far as I know. I mean, I know he just transformed, but he straight up ate the demons tits. AAAnd then Amon brutally killed a child so bad that even the demons ran. If I hadn't been spoiled on these things, I would have been completely shell-shocked, and idk if I prefer knowing beforehand or not. Edit: holy actual fuck, i got a notification and watched just a part of this OVA and its so UNBELIEVABLY brutal. Holy hell. I still love devilman though, something about the series endlessly fascinates me, and i love to see the remakes
